Ethernet Problems
I have recently bought myself an ethernet hub (switch) and 3 ethernet cables.
I have 2 PCs and a NTL modem going into the hub. Now how the hell do I get the internet working on the PCs? I've got it all linked up and I can play LAN games through both PCs, but I cannot connect to the internet. This is a simple way of showing how it's set up: Modem | Hub--PC | PC Any suggestions in how to get the internet running!? |
Re: Ethernet Problems
Why did you buy a switch? You would be better of with a router :)
|
Re: Ethernet Problems
Switches are cheaper and that's all I need.
The computers connect fine, but the internet doesn't! I could really do with some useful help please. |
Re: Ethernet Problems
What IP addresses are your PC's showing?

Re: Ethernet Problems
What did you buy Make & Model?

Re: Ethernet Problems
I agree, a router would have been the way forward and not cost much more. You can get routers for 20 quid now.

Re: Ethernet Problems
May I ask why?
The PCs connect just fine. The only routers I could find were £100 |

Re: Ethernet Problems
Wow, thanks.
Are you sure my switch won't work? |
Re: Ethernet Problems
The switch would work if your modem allocated a real public ip to each pc (the xbox service?)
otherwise router for sharing 1 public ip |

Re: Ethernet Problems
See, there was a reason I asked why you bought a switch ;) much easier in the long run to get a router.

Either way, forget the switch, Dar, a cheap way of sharing internet connection is via Internet Connection Sharing, which needs the 'host' pc to be on for the 'client' to work, or get a router. - there is a trend developing you may have noticed *cough* router *cough* :D |

Linksys is a popular choice...

Re: Ethernet Problems
Just ordered myself a router.
Is this one ok? http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=52897 I only use ethernet to connect my PCs so I'm hoping that'll be fine. |
Re: Ethernet Problems
Yes - you can even plug your printer into it to share the printer without having another PC switched on.
|
Re: Ethernet Problems
I know, that's great! :D
Do I plug the modem in with ethernet as well? |
Re: Ethernet Problems
When you get it you turn off everything, plug the cable modem into the port on the router titled Internet, WAN or something like that (usually on its ownsome). Plug all your PCs ethernet ports into the ones entitled 1,2,3,4 or something like that, then power up the CM, wait for the sync light, then the router, wait for the power or rdy light or something like that to stop flickering and then the PCs and job done.

Re: Ethernet Problems
Ok, I have everything working fine now.
Just one thing... How do I get the printer set up in the network??? I've plugged it into the USB port but my computers don't find it. |
