SB4100 Will do full 10mbit!!! :-)

1 Attachment(s)
Today my SB4100 cable modem rebooted, and hey presto! 10mbit :).

It was previously stuck at around 5-6mbit.

I hope this will come as a relief to other SB4100 owners.

Re: SB4100 Will do full 10mbit!!! :-)

Well I was sure before that a SB4100 should be able to do 10mbit anyhow as it has a 10/100 port and the specs rate it upto 38mbit anyhow. So i rebooted modem and def have the new Firmware on the modem but the speeds are the same as they were before. The router I have def has 10/100mbit so thats not it, i am guessing either they have not "tweaked" my end yet or everyone in my area is downloading something to test the new speeds out.

Ill leave it a day or so - see what happens :)

i'm very glad to hear it, i've seen a lot of the newer NTL cable modems and don't think they compare anywhere near my SB4100

Have you tried downloading from a server with a seriously uber connection, like a microsoft update server or something?. Just to make sure.....or maybe the area you are in has a lot of people using the NTL network??

Just to keep you Updated as to what happened, I rang TS and they checked my UBR and it was at max Capacity with people downloading. This made sense as people are getting 10mbit and then the first thing they do is download something, see its not 10mbit and then keep trying thus flooding the network. They advised me that I should get no lower then 2mbit in speed even if everyone was downloading (Traffic Shaping??). Eventually though she moved me to a Different UBR I think and my Speeds went upto 10mbit straight away, the slowest it was that night was 900K/Sec.

This was pretty much short lived though as the next night (6pm) it was all over the place again sometimes as low as 30k/sec and this was from my NTL Homepage - so in effect never leaving the NTL Network. My educated guess is that once the Novelity of 10mbit has worn off with everyone, the network will settle down and so will the speeds.

I think they would of changed your upstream channel, as changing ubr would physically mean moving a cable.

Ahh sorry thats what she did, the channel - all she basically said was that the channel I was on was maxed out (high Usage) and the other channel although still a lot on should be better, which it was for that night. Is this the same as me changing the channel on my SB4100 (1,2,3) - cos I tried that myself before calling and never seen any difference.

Odd thing was - before any mention of 10mbit, my area was pretty quiet as a lot of people around here that I have spoken to are on BT rather then Cable (as we can get both). On my 2mbit before (and 3mbit) it was constant al the time, since the 10mbit upgrade its been litterly all over the place, as low as 30k, 2mbit some of the time, the odd 3mbit etc.

What is the 'new' firmware version?

I have SB4110-4.0.6-SCM-NOSHELL and am only getting 5Mb.

Found these version on t'interweb

SB4100-4.0.6-SCM-NOSHELL.hex.bin
SB4100-4.0.9-SCM07-NOSHELL.hex.bin
SB4100-4.0.12-SCM05-NOSHELL.hex.bin
SB4100-0.4.4.0-SCM06-NOSH.hex.bin
SB4100-0.4.4.2-SCM01-NOSH.hex.bin
SB4100-0.4.4.3-SCM01-NOSH.hex.bin

I know its probably totaly against the TAC/AUP to use your own firmware as Motorolla only release firmwares to ISP's. Just out of cunriosity, is the 'new' 10mb firmware one of these?

Re: SB4100 Will do full 10mbit!!! :-)

When I rebooted the other day it upgraded to 'SB4100-0.4.9.4-SCM02-NOSH', but I'm having a few problems with it. If I go to a specific website and look at their forum, 50% of the time I get:

HFC: T4 Timer Expired
Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, but no Unicast Maint
Received Async Error Range Failed
HFC: Shutting Downstream Down

and it reboots

Didn't happen before the upgrade :(

It happens very occasionally on other websites too, but never during gaming etc

Pretty sure changing the channel cm side does not work anymore , moreso because the upstream frequency does not change either when altered.

Re: SB4100 Will do full 10mbit!!! :-)

I have just rebooted my modem for the n'th time since being upgraded to 10Mb, and I now have the 'SB4100-0.4.9.4-SCM02-NOSH' firmware.
Did a quick dl test during my lunchbreak and managed to get a steady 780k/sec peaking at 860-900 from my news server.
I'll have a poke about M$ or Suse websites later for a nice fat file to dl at speed.

Out of interest, has anyone noticed a speed diff with using the SB4100 connected to a 100Mb LAN card or to a 10Mb router uplink port?

May have to test that after work...

Few things you need to check:

1. Are you def 100% on 10mbit speeds? sounds like your still on 3mbit. Do a Speed test on ADSL Guide and look at the Upload part - does this say 300 or 512k ???

2. DId you call TS? They helped me on finding out the problem due to congestion on my channel.

3. Speeds will be all over the shop esp in the evening anyhow...

I am experiencing exactly the same problems with one specific website.

Its strange, http://bbc.co.uk/ works fine every time, but http://bbc.co.uk/weather/ causes the modem to reboot 9/10 times.

Anyone ele had this issue with this or other websites?

Called CS, got a very pleasant young lady (in the UK!) who told me that it hadn't been released yet, wouldn't be until February no matter what tier you are on now. That a letter would be sent out when they were ready to upgrade me.... ...guess I can either wait, try again or downgrade to 2 meg first. Best stop before I go too far off topic

Re: SB4100 Will do full 10mbit!!! :-)

If you are using a router check that its WAN port can support full 10Mb
Some older models have a half duplex 10Mb WAN port, so you will only realy see 50-70% speeds.
I am currently avaraging 700k a sec thru my router, with a direct connection I hit 900k instantly.

funnily enough switching from usb to ethernet seems to have done the trick for me no more 4 mbps max:tu:

ri, 25 Nov 2005 18:42:20 GMT

1st 512K took 468 ms = 1120274 KB/sec, approx 9231 Kbps, 9.01 Mbps
2nd 512K took 438 ms = 1197005 KB/sec, approx 9863 Kbps, 9.63 Mbps
3rd 512K took 437 ms = 1199744 KB/sec, approx 9886 Kbps, 9.65 Mbps
4th 512K took 485 ms = 1081006 KB/sec, approx 8648 Kbps, 8.45 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9407 Kbps, 9.19 Mbps
