[Merged] Routers and 10Mb

After finally managing to convince the peeps at ntl that I had a good reason for moving to 10mb early my worst fear has been confirmed.

My 4 port router is not capable of handling a 10mb connection on the WAN port, I presume because they have only designed that port to be 10M half duplex.

(I have tested the connection direct to my PC with zonealarm free installed and downloaded the same test file I used with the router installed and managed a solid 1.1Mb per second)

So, on to the list:

Router Name: SMC Barricade SMC7004BR UK.
Router Firmware: R1.96h2.
Typical throughput with 10Mb: 450-600Kb per sec.

Re: List your router & whether it works with 10mb

Lol, there are slight differences between the 7004BR and the 7004ABR (one difference I can remember is that the printer port is uni-directional on the BR model while it is bi-directional on the ABR.) :)

The router does work with the connection in that it doesn't crash out or anything, I just don't get the full speed that I get if I connect the modem directly to the PC.

Router supporting 10mbit bandwidth

Hey guys,

I just realised that my router is the cause of my 10mbit ntl connection only running at 5mbit, the model is Belkin F5D5231-4, i called them up and they said that all their routers only support 5.5mbit, can anyone recommend a router that will let me run at full speed?

thank-you

Its more than likely, i have a Belkin model of some description, itll be the same when i get upgraded, looks like a new Router for me. Either that or get a new NIC and use my server as the router and the Belkin as the switch.

I have a Linksys Wireless / 4 Port Switch Router: WRT54GS

I've had no problems at all with speed and recent speed tests show a full 10mbit connection. I've used Linksys routers for years with no issues although they are probably one or two pounds more than some you can get. Linksys are basically Cisco now as they were purchased by them last year.

Paul 21-11-2005 17:23

Re: Router supporting 10mbit bandwidth

If the router only has a 10M ethernet port then it's not going to run at full speed, even in duplex mode. You need a 100M or 1000M (Gigabit) port.

Quote:

Integrated 10/100 4-Port Switch

The Router has a built-in, 4-port network switch to allow your wired
computers to share printers, data and MP3 files, digital photos, and much
more. The switch features automatic detection so it will adjust to the speed
of connected devices. The switch will transfer data between computers and
the Internet simultaneously without interrupting or consuming resources.

The light on the router are Green 10Mb, and Orange for 100Mb, it might be that your PCI card is the problem.

Or your modem itself

Try connecting to the web from 1 PC to the modem directly.

What modem do you have?

the LAN side of the router is capable of 10/100Mb/s, so shared pc's will communicate ok, through the router, but the WAN side - which connects to the internet, is only capable of 10Mb/s half duplex, hence around 5Mb/s download.

This is the case with my Linksys V2 Befsr41 - and why I ain't fussed about upgrading, just yet ;)

SMC7004ABR UK
This is mine, and would be interested (as per the earlier posts), to see if this will get me the full 10MB service. I have looked at SMC website and for the user that had the model with the 'A' missing, it looked to be a completely different model in the picture (and I am sure it's not, as in total shape and design). I have discarded my original documentation so cannot confirm that just because an 'A' is missing from the model number it is a completely different router. Just hope mine works. (Cambridge)

BloodyL 22-11-2005 18:47

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

Hi rick, the BR and ABR Barracade models may look different but they contain the same basic core hardware, it's just that the ABR is basically a BR version 2 after tweaking and improving certain functions of the first revision.

If the manufacturer doesn't supply the relevent specifications and a google search on product reviews of the item turns up empty handed then the only option left is to actually test the device yourself.

Sorry I never put any Model Numbers on Mine, the 7004BR (old and cannot buy any more) def has a 10mbit port which means as the max it can passis 10mbit minus the overheads, you probably get about 8mbit max. The difference in cost for a 10mbit or a 10/100mbit part to Manufacurers is V.Small indeed which is why Most are putting a 10/100 port - you will find with most OLD models that they fitted a 10mbit port as back then 10mbit internet was like unheard of - esp in UK market.

ok , not an expert, but as I understand it

- 2 factors are at play here, the notional 'speed', which is the maximum that can be sent/received by the router, and the 'duplex' setting.

- 'full duplex' can both send and receive at the same time & should achieve 'near' 10 meg

- half duplex, however, can only send or receive, but not both at the same time, so the device has to wait for the 'ack' packet to be sent/received before sending or receiving the next data packet.

This effectively halves the download speed, as many (older) routers have half duplex wan ports.

SteveB 30-11-2005 20:34

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

Thanks,

Well I removed my router (Linksys BEFW11S4 V2 - w/10mb WAN) and went direct PC-Modem to achieve the following :

Wed, 30 Nov 2005 21:28:54 UTC
1st 128K took 94 ms = 1394383 Bytes/sec = approx 11601 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec

So I'm 100% convinced that my speed issues are simply the router, not the AMBIt 120 ot NTL network issues.

They aren't quite the same thing. While a 10 meg network port (ethernet) is sending data at 10 Mbps (max) - it is ethernet frames it is sendiing - inside these frames are the TCP/IP packets, inside these packets is the http data - all this overhead means the final actual data transfer is a fair bit less than 10 Mbps.

SteveB 01-12-2005 12:26

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

I see, so you mean the NTL service is actually greater than 10mb if you include the overhead.

Not sure, but according to the datasheet on the WRT54GC it should be compatible with the 10Mbps service:

The early rev 1 routers certainly cannot.

Hi Folks

Does anyone know if the WRT54GS will work with Mac OSX systems?

Reason i ask is all the specs i read only mention Windows systems

Thanks

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

Routers work with any OS, as long as the OS can deal with a network. Any configuration of them is done using standard tools (web interface or telnet).

My old Benq did not work.....the max speed was ~500KB/sec

I just bought Belkin 7230-4UK Model 4000 and the speed is stable at ~1200KB/sec...My XBOX is also on the same router...

My question is this: I paid 44 pounds for this model and i can get Linksys 54GS for 49 only....so please i need your advice??? Shall I exchange it or keep the Belkin???

thnx

The other Belkin 7231-4 with max speed 125Mbit is also available at 49!!!

I would expect a 10 full duplex could probably only achieve to around 8-9mbit, I havent seen hardware usually able to perform to 100% of max.

Quick question,

Whats the difference between the Linksys WRT54G and the WRT54GS?. Also which one is newer, better?

Thanks

full review of both models is here http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.p...showpage&pid=6

Quote:

-to hack out a Mini PCI card or use with Linksys’ PoE solution: WRT54Gv1.0
-for the latest and greatest 802.11G: WRT54G v4.0
-for 802.11G SpeedBooster or extra memory: WRT54GS v1.0v
-for 3rd party Firmware compatibility. WRT54G v1-v4 / WRT54GS v1-v4.0
-for All round performance and total recommendations: WRT54G v2.0-v4.0 / WRT54GS v1.0-v4.0
-note: Stay away from WRT54G v1.x (125Mhz CPU) and WRT54G v5.0 VxWorks + limited ram (no Linux so no 3rd party firmware)
Can someone answer my previous question??? I'm staying away from 231-4 since many reports suggests that it is the worst!!! Is this true??!!!

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

Hello i have a Belkin 4-port cable router serial number (F5D5231-4) and i was wondering if it supports 10 meg from NTL? I have 10 meg from NTL but when i do a java speed speed test it says my speed is only 7 meg (through the Belkin router). If i connect the NTL modem directly to my pc (and not through the Belkin router) then do a speed test it says my internet speed is 9 meg. So does anyone know if this Belkin router supports up to 10 meg?

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

Netgear RP614 router's that support 10mb are:

version 1 - no (10Mbps half duplex only)
version 2 - yes (10/100Mbps auto-sensing)
version 3 - yes (10/100Mbps auto-sensing)

Since my speed upgrade to 10Mb, I have had to upgrade my router from a v1 to a v3.
If you were to buy one in the shops now, it will probably be a v3 (white), as they have been on the shelves for over a year now.
I find these to be very good routers, I had my v1 switched on 24/7 for nearly 3 years, and it never missed a beat.

I'm flying :D

There are 3 ways to tell the version number of a Netgear RP614.

1. It's written on the box
2. It's written on the base of the router
3. v3 is white and are sold at most outlets now, whilst the others are silver. Don't think they sell v2, and certainly not v1 anymore.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Aren't u Platty that I bought the OCZ ram from on the CT forums? If so, small world mate ;)

Tis a small world m8 ;)

Defo not a 3. Will have to try and find the box coz there's nowt on the bottom of the router.

Seems it might be a v1. Just says RP614 on the label rather than v2 and v3 at the end like it should have for a 2 or 3.

Sorry, meant to point out, if it's like my old one, which didn't specify a version number, then it's a v1 for sure. On the Netgear site, it's listed as "RP614 (aka RP614v1)" ;)

You will deffo need to replace that router if you wish to reach the full 10mb.

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb

This router selection problem appears to be a nightmare of incorrect assumptions.

I checked out a Linksys WRT54G Version 5 and was assured by Linksys support and two people on this forum that it would correctly handle 10Mbits.

It arrived on Friday and in the past 24 hours I have experienced nothing but frustrations which were not much helped with two 0800 calls diverted to Manilla.

It will run at 10Mbits when it feels like it but will then choke and revert to a crawl. It swings from lightning fast to no better than dial-up and IMO it depends on the server at the other end.

The auto MTU negotiation does not work. I have since found out that in the USA this has been a fairly common complaint and some people are testing a new beta firmware release which does over-come the auto negotiation problem. The auto setting does not work but there is a manual setting of MTU of choice. I have ping tested to various servers and with the do not fragment settings in place it is obvious that an auto element is required. The setting suggested by tech support was 1492 but to some USA servers that is way too high a an MSS of 1402 (1430 MTU) is about the limit.

It looks like Linksys will come out with a fix (new firmware) but for the moment I have a brand new router with a strong urge to send it either back to the supplier (no easy task as RMA's will take hours of time and weeks of messing about for no purpose) or buy another brand which actually does work.

Does anybody have a router working on 10meg which consistently does the job. By doing the job I mean always as fast as though there was no router connected at all. I have had plenty of time on direct (modem\P.C.) and the speed is awesome.

Liam
