Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Hi,
Yesterday I 'updated' my connection online from 2MB to the 10MB service, however no matter what site I visit I can only max out my connection at 310KB/second. Having read a number of threads I thought it could have been a problem due to my NTL120 modem, however I am hearing that 120's max out at 5MB. I'm not even reaching 3MB! I have tried it with and without my router and all different ethernet port settings. I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated :) |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Best person for this, if he's online, is Bill C:)

For your information;
Downstream Receive Power Level : 4.86 dBmv Downstream SNR : 34.02 dB Upstream Transmit Power Level : 45.00 dBmv Pretty much constant. Also, Network Access : Enabled Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 bps Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 bps Maximum Number of CPEs : 1 Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
What time of day are you using it, speed does drop during peak time around 6pm to around midnight, as burst speed goes up contention affect goes up with it.

All time of day :(

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Im in exactly the same position. Got my 3mb upgraded to last night, the modem rebooted and was updated to 10mb. I get the full 50k upstream but my downstream hasnt really improved.
Same modem as you, my downstream SNR is similar to yours, but the power level is much lower: downstream receive power level 0.77 dbmv downstream snr 34.82 db upstream transmit power level 41.00 dbmv |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Apparently the NTL: 120 modems don't have 100Mbs capable ethernet ports, only 10Mbs. If your PC NIC/Router negotiates an inappropriate speed with this, you may wind up getting very poor performance: see this thread.
Looking at the posts on this, I get the impression this may only show as a problem with higher broadband connection rates. |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
i appoligise if i misread but i thiought the upgrade was only for customers on 3mb

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Can people in Middlesbrough/Teesside get 10Mbps yet? If so how?
Im on 2Mbps at the moment. |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Use the speed upgrade link on the ntlworld.com site. You will pay £37.99 though.

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
I dont think my dad will be too happy if I do that, he pays the bill :erm:

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
If speeds stay low then you will need to wait until dec when ntl consider it out of trial and then get an engineer in to check the stats on the line to see if they are in acceptable range, mine was apperently out of spec and since he fixed things have improved.

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
I wonder why people hosting webserver's at home is so common, for basic hosting ntl provide it free and webhosting services are dirt cheap. Many under a pound a month for lowend stuff.

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
There are many reasons why people do it:
1. You can install anything you want in regard to scripting languages (ntl webspace doesnt provide php or anything like that). 2. If it goes wrong its your fault, not ntl's or you hosting ISP's. 3. It is easier to update by simply sending your site via a network drive rather than waiting forever to transfer it by ftp. 4. You gather experience from running a webserver. 5. Resources are dedicated so it is a lot faster than shared hosting. There are many more reasons but I cannot think of them all. The only downside is that it costs roughly 34p a day for me to run my webserver, that amounts to about £120 a year. Its a lot more than paid hosting but it makes up for itself with the ability to have whatever you like on it. My website is designed for helping people set up servers on their internet connection (not just on ntl, on any isp). If you want to take a look its www.abyssunderground.co.uk. Also, I do not use Apache. I use a much better server called Abyss Web Server. Ill explain more if people want to know. |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
I can argue your point #5, hosting on a shared unix server on a 100mbit port will be a lot faster then on someone's windows xp box on a residental cable line. Of course it probably feels faster when you browsing over your lan :)

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
your site is down by the way :(
|
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
I know  NTL was performing maintenance during the night and it was offline for the most part. It is back online now.

Actually, I have limited the speed on the lan to my upload speed so it is in fact the same. However my site runs quickly anyway because it was designed like that. |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
The point is that I am not even getting the guarenteed 3MB service that I have subscribed for, let alone 10MB. I phoned CS but she fobbed me off with me probably having 'spyware', putting aside the fact that DU Meter showed no incoming/outgoing traffic during idle....

Im not sure how many people run your version of webserver. What I do know is that 10 times more users, use apache, me being one:) I install many webservers on clients systems over SSH, I never install anything but Apache :) |

Apache has no GUI and a very high memory usage and does not nativly support any scripting languages. Abyss Web Server has a very easy to use GUI and supports AHTML, PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby and many other scripting languages. Apache is also unstable, and I could quite easily take down any server running apache with a simple DDoS attack. Abyss Web Server has features to help prevent this happening. I know this because I had a friend DDoS msn.com and he succeeded quite easily. When he DDoSed me, he failed. You should try the server and see what you think. You will be impressed. |

Like I said, if you dont beleive me you should try it. www.aprelium.com Oh, and they have a support forum that actually does help you too, unlike apache which seems practically non-existant. |
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Thats because Apache is usually run and maintained by professionals in their field and not some Geek in his bedroom :)

Anyway, why are we arguing? This is supposed to be a discussion! There is no doubt about it, apache will probably remain the most widely used server in the world but those who prefer stability tend to look elsewhere. |

Unless, of course, you're obliquely referring to ntl's intention of upgrading 3Mb users to 10Mb by the end of the year. Quote:
Well said, AbyssUnderground. I have no idea how valid your claim is, but at least you expressed it clearly and rationally, and insulting you is certainly not a particularly effective or even acceptable way of of disputing it. |

Absolutely, King Of Fools. digitalistic, you have a 3Mb, not a 3MB connection. Try Robin Walker's speed test. |

What I get on the tiermigration page is the offer to upgrade to "bund03," which I presume is 3Mb, for £37.99 (a month, I presume). Says nothing about 10Mb.

I must add this though, if you are getting a good constant 2mbit speed, then hold off as once you jump to 10mbit you speeds will be all over the shop (in my area they are) and save yourself some dosh until its a bit more solid I would say.,. |

abyss your site is nice design tho, thumbs up for that and is fairly streamlined.

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
Thats all fine and dandy if thats what you like to do in your free time but offering paid hosting if I guess thats what you are looking to do is wrong, wrong, wrong. No matter how you argue it being a good deal it all comes down to that you only have 25kB upload.
|
Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
yeah he defenitly shouldnt be selling hosting on that and that would be against the AUP I think as well.

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
I was teing mine tonight and the speeds were as low as 30KB/Sec and Upto about 210KB/Sec. I rang TS and she checked my Settings (Nice Lady with Indian Accent) and the Stream I was on was heavily loaded (probably with people downloading, Speed testing and god knows what else). She moved me somewhere else (sorry dont know technical term) and now my speed Vary better 700-900. Once the Novelty of downloading a file wears off for people, I guess my speed will reach full 10mbit type speed (or close to anyhow)..

the 120s do have 100 ports and I think the issue was they were negotiating with the ubr at 10 half and this has now been resolved.

Re: Only getting 310KB from 10MB connection?
First of all, thanks for the comments on my site.
Second, I have never seen abyss use more than 2% cpu usage on my 1.3GHz duron server, so your claim that it is resource hungry it a load of rubbish. It has the smallest memory usage I have ever seen for any program, and this cant be said for apache which uses at least 40mb of memory compared to abyss's 3mb. Yes my upload is 25KB/s but even then my website still loads faster than some professional sites. Also you should know the site is actually limited by me to 10KB/s so that shows even more how fast it is. If you bothered to read the website properly you would see that Im not selling hosting, infact selling hosting on my connection is in breech of NTL's TOS, thats why it is free hosting. Ive never had any complaints from the 10 people I host from yet so it cant be that bad. Just because you run unix, have apache, php and mysql and a 100Mbps connection does not mean it will be a fast website. The website is only fast if you have a fast server to process the scripts on it. You only need the fast connection for large images and files. My site loads in a little under 10 seconds which for most people is very fast. If I wanted I could make it even quicker but at the expense of a less professional and good looking website. If you want to argue you case on how much better apache is (I stand by my decision that abyss is better, but its only my opinion) then you can go and argue on the abyss forums, www.aprelium.com/forum and see what they have to say about it. I think you will find that several hundred people have switched from apache to abyss because it is so much easier to set up, configure and manage than apache is. Infact, I spend 2 days just trying to get php support for apache and still I never suceeded. I can have it set up in abyss in a couple of minutes. I think I have made my point. :dozey: |
