Re: Firefox 1.5 Final appears to be out!

Sorry, it's said "1.5" both there and in the automatic update prompt since moving from beta to RC1.

RC2 is still the only one officially available.

Like I said in my post above, none of us have 1.5 (final) in reality.
All they've done is write "1.5" in the documentation to save themselves a bit of time for the future releases.. it doesn't mean much.

Ah well!

According to an article elswhere we should see FF 1.5 hitting the servers very soon :)

Firefox 1.5 is a major milestone release by the Mozilla Foundation. It represents not only a viable alternative to the way we surf the web, but the continued growth and success of the open-source software community. Itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s estimated that 10% of the world's internet-enabled computers run Firefox, with some countries in Europe (Germany, Slovenia and Finland) claiming numbers three times that amount. Love it or hate it, Firefox has truly sparked an internet revolution with its foundations rooted in the spirit of community.

Here's just a few of many things you can expect to see in Firefox 1.5:

* Support for SVG, Canvas, CSS3 Columns, Javascript 1.6
* Revised options window including a new "Clear Private Data" option
* Binary patching with an enhanced automatic update system, eliminating the need to reinstall Firefox for an update or subsequent release
* Significant decrease in page rendering time
* Instant "Back/Foward" browser cache along with tab "Drag and Drop" functionality
* Hundreds of program/stability related bugfixes

We expect the final release to be posted inside here once these server-side bugs have been resolved.
Update: The nightly builds located in here will be copied to the 1.5 release folder later today. Firefox 1.5 has NOT been officially released but technically you can just grab your OS installer from there and be confident that you are runing Fx 1.5. Expect the release notes and assorted announcement pages to be up later today.

Speaking of which - congrats man - i think.... Im due in March (to be an unlcue that is) - not too sure what to think though - its kinda scary for a guy who has avoided that sort of thing on a personal level.

Good luck though! :tu:

Re: Firefox 1.5 Final appears to be out!

There'll be a release candidate 3 before the final version of 1.5.

Paul K 16-11-2005 09:21

Re: Firefox 1.5 Final appears to be out!

Just checked the forums and it looks like a few people on the Mozilla forums jumped the gun and posted on different sites that the release was today, then it was corrected on the mozilla forum as in a couple of days time, now it's stated as later in the month.

mart44 16-11-2005 09:48

Re: Firefox 1.5 Final appears to be out!

Perhaps the most reliable source is this (note the name of the poster).

I suppose a few sites or people want to be the first with the announcement but I find the best place to bookmark is here and disregard all other info. Or maybe just keep track of 'Firefox Builds' on the Mozilla forums.

It maybe an incompatible theme. If so, I expect it might be updated eventually. Go to 'Themes' (Mozilla site) and see what versions is says the theme will work with. Try the default theme.

Agreed, this looks fine on my version on that section of the options.

it used to be in the themes part of mozilla site, but not any more, at 1.8 the guy who made it forgot to submit it by a certain date, and therefors lost the right to display it in there site then, but not sure why he does not submit it again.

it is called charamel, I thought the pop ups could be resized?

ik

mart44 16-11-2005 22:44

Re: Firefox 1.5 Final appears to be out!

The Options dialogue boxes can't be resized unfortunately. I managed to find a Charamel theme with the version number of 1.1.991. Updating the FF version number in the 'install.rdf' file (in the .jar) before installing the theme made no difference. The buttons are still clipped. It looks as if it will be necessary to find another theme that you like.

Well, Firefox 1.5 RC3 is out now.

Still no Thunderbird 1.5 RC2, though.

No other theme gives you as much real estate as the minifox and littlefox series...

mart44 18-11-2005 16:45

Re: Firefox 1.5 Final appears to be out!

It is possible to make the default theme look OK and fairly space-saving with a few customisations. Reduced height toolbars, coloured tabs, a background toolbar tile and text sizes are all possible by adding bits and pieces to 'userChrome.css'. Example

Firefox v1.5 has been release

There doesn't seem to be anything official yet on the mozilla.org web site but theres a news release on v1.5 with the official download links here :

Theres some UK mirror download links too aswell i think

Got it earlier too... seems a lot quicker at rendering pages than 1.0 was. So far, I'm impressed - worth the upgrade :tu:

Waiting for the proper English version. :)

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

There is an en-GB version out now (as of yesterday by the date) - just when we've started waiting for 1.5.1 for the latest bug-fix! ;-(

Still, I suppose it'll update incrementally when it comes, rather than require a new download...

that incremental upgrade will be interesting to check out, I had problems going from 1.07 to 1.5 (both Eng-GB version), even after deleting all extensions it wouldn't even load in safe mode, eventually, I had to clear the profile and do a clean install, before it would work.

OK now, thankfully :)

patrickp 11-12-2005 02:56

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

Did you uninstall the previous version and delete the Firefox folder in Program Files before installing the new version, Gaz? That always sorts it for me.

1.5 onwards should update incrementally, anyway, so hopefully this will put an end to problems like this.

hopefully, Patrick, - I have a 'clean' install of 1.5 'english GB' , now, the anticipated upgrade to 1.5.1 will, I hope, 'follow on', but the delay between the US and the GB versions of 1.5 was a puzzle ;)

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

Well I finally got round to installing this. It went flawlessly. And is it just me, or does it render pages a *lot* faster than 1.0.7?

ikthius 16-12-2005 16:46

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

my first couple of days did, then it crashed more often than I have ever had, so I am back to 1.0.7

Thunderbird 1.5RC2's out now. Click here for the en-GB version. Of course, if you've already got a pre-release T'bird 1.5 installed, it'll update incrementally if you have that enabled.

It's still just as sluggish as the very first public release of Firefox (for me at least)

patrickp 22-12-2005 13:23

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

I just upgraded to 10Mb yesterday (;-D) - it's more the time sites take to respond now than anything else. But before that, I would say too, 1.5 seems noticeably faster than 1.07. I presume you did a clean install, Bifta?

Bifta 22-12-2005 13:25

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

Yes, it was a clean install, Firefox tends to only last long enough on my PC for me to realise that there haven't been any improvements yet.

I still use Thunderbird though, have done for a few months now and I can't fault it.

patrickp 22-12-2005 13:31

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

Ho hum. ;-( Well, at least, as I said, T'bird's just updated.

Electrolyte01 22-12-2005 13:34

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

After giving FF 1.5 a try I'm still not impressed. It renders pages at the same speed as IE6 does (for me that is).

patrickp 22-12-2005 21:17

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

And that's bad, Electrolyte? I use FF _because_ it's as fast as IE, and because it comes out well ahead in the consideration of its other aspects.

I tried several other browsers before I came across FF, and the main reason I didn't change over to any of them was that they were all _slower_ than IE.

AndrewJ 23-12-2005 08:51

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

I am constantly having to click on a smiley then delete it for the flashing cursor to permit me to type in a box like this, and quick reply is impossible.

I am on FF 1.5 with fasterfox and gmail notification extensions.

Driving me nuts it is, anyone else got this issue?

No, it's because I usually see people saying FF is faster than IE.

AndrewJ 23-12-2005 10:48

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

To be honest FF is a nicer browser but the tech problems I am having with it and lack of solutions is making me think about dropping FF and moving back to IE6.

patrickp 23-12-2005 18:13

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

TBH I don't think most people have been having these sorts of issues, Saxo. It's important, though, to uninstall a version before installing a new one, and to delete the Firefox directory in Program Files, too.

However, 1.5 now upgrades incrementally, so you don't have to worry about that any more. But it is important to have started off with a clean installation in the first place.

It's probably a good idea to be selective about the extensions you install, as well. Read up on what they do and bear in mind that some extensions can produce conflicts with others.

Edit: I notice you're using Fasterfox. I don't use it myself, but I believe it changes your configuration, primarily to increase your speed. I have seen it implicated with messing up people's FF installations, though. Is it possible that changes you've made with it are responsible for the problems you're having?

AndrewJ 23-12-2005 18:31

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

Could be possible Patrick however my 2nd HD failed today and I had corruption on my primary HD so just reformatted my computer, so going with a clean install of FF later with no Fasterfox extension.

patrickp 23-12-2005 22:21

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

Try flat IDE cables rather than round, Saxo. They may not be as pretty, and provide a bit more obstruction to good air circulation, but I'm sure they transfer data with less errors than round ones.

If you're not using it already, Speedfan's SMART checking for hard drives seems to be a bit more revealing than some other applications, and it's a very useful hardware monitor generally.

AndrewJ 23-12-2005 22:28

Re: [Merged] Firefox 1.5 Final

How you know I am using round...

Well my main problem HD wise is it has documents on it and they are locked with the xp locked thing preventing me from acessing them with my new user account on the newly formatted main HD ( sata )
