Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
HI - I posted this in another forum but no luck. Im sure someone here can help.
----------- I just built a computer for a mate. The system has a built in NIC. The problem is I can't register his system with his broadband provider (NTL). With NTL hooking up to broadband works like this: They give you a cable modem and 2 cables. One Ethernet cable and one USB. You hook up the Ethernet cable (or USB) to modem and computer. Open up a browser and type http://autoreg.autoregister.net. A page will jump up that will register that NIC with their system and after that you will get full internet access. So I have tried the above but it does not connect. The strange thing is when I bring it to my house and hook it to my router it works fine. You can browse the net. So the NIC not broken. (I think) But when I try to hook it directly to my modem (not going trough my router) and type autoreg.autoregister.net, again nothing happens. It refuses to bring up registration page. I phoned NTL and they talked me trough a few things that I did not fully understand (ping, cmd, reset winstock etc). but they could not fix it. The chap said reinstall XP. I said itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a new installation anyway. He said itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a bad install. Anyway I reinstalled, but did not install SP2 this time - I had to install LAN drives on provided CD to get net working trough router - but refuses to work without my router. (Have also tried with USB cable - does not work either) Also a quick lesson in ping/winstock/ip numbers etc would be nice. Please help. Thanks. ---- |

Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
This is driving me nuts. It's very hard to eliminate things when everthing seems so intermittent.
Let me try and explain. I have cable b-band from NTL. My friend has cable B-band from NTL (just got it - has not worked from day 1). I have a box that kicks out cable tv as well as having an Ethernet port on the back for B-Band. When you hook up a new computer using the Ethernet cable (straight not crossed) to the modem/cable box and open up a browser, if you are lucky it automatically has a page for you to register a new NIC. You can do that for 4 NIC's. Or you can type autoreg.autoregister.net and the page SHOULD come up. I hooked up my friends computer to his new broadband. It refused to register the NIC. I hooked my friends computer to my broadband and it still refused to register. (nothing wrong with my b-band, had it for years) But when I hook it up trough my router it access the net. I reset the box, still nothing. Reset again still nothing. Then for no reason at all it decides to register on my modem. ???LOST??? I try to register another 2 computer to my b-band. Same thing, after a couple of resets - just out-of-the-blue they decide to register. My friend has a fancy New cable modem (no tv). All the right lights come up and claim there is signal and its connected via Ethernet. Not a single computer can get a peep out of the new modem. Everything looks ok - but u can ping www.google.co.uk away and you will get nothing. (Im using his modem at my house with the same cable I used in mine). When I hook up my modem the little icon says connect at 10 Mbps. His says Connected at 100Mbps. From all of this I have concluded that my modem is a temperamental bitch. And that his modem is broken! As for the NICS and software I have no idea. Too many variables - and Im sure when I phone up the cable people they will not want to send a new modem round. Do you think it could possible be the new modem is broken. Or all the 4 computers I have tried need to be tweaked in someway to work with the new modem? (Operating systems XP pro, XP pro, Xp pro and XP home. XP home is a dell computer that I did not build) |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
I may be wrong, but as far as I know the 'autoregister.net' procedure is for STB's not stand alone modems, with a modem just power cycling all the components should pick up a connection automatically???
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...tips/swap.html explains it better than can ;) |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
Thanks for the reply Homealone.
Well I will give it another go on my mates new modem and his computer as they have both been off for hrs. But this does not explain why it did not work originally with tech support - as we only tried it with one pc (so only 1 mac address). |

Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
I have been doing some reading from the site Homealone posted and have tried a few things.
Using my mates modem (that has never worked) I get IP: 86.5.148.249 Sub Net 255.255.255.0 gateway 86.5.148.254 now according to that site it says in the ranges xxx.xxx.xxx.248 - xxx.xxx.xxx.253 (NTL temporary pre-registration service). And that's correct - I have yet to register any computer with the new modem. But then I try https://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html but nothing happens. So whats going on? Modem faulty? I have tried several computers with this modem! |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
if you have tried to register that modem on several pc's without any joy then I would have thought there is def a fault with the modem.
What is the model of the modem? Go to 192.168.100.1 and reset the modem to its factory defaults. Worth a try! |

Have you tried both the USB and Ethernet options and are you powering of the modem before switching cables? Also is it a straight thorough patch cable. If you are powering both the pc and SACM off while making the changes and powering the SACM up, waiting for the lights to lock and then powering the PC up then you may want to ring CS again and ask why the Modem isn't registering your ethernet connection properly. |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
I have an NTL250 and mine does have a reset!
Hense the reason why I asked what model he had. EDIT: If you ain't already done so try using USB as Paul said, just in case your Ethernet cable is faulty or the wrong type. (I forgot that one) |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
What lights are currently lit on your mates SACM? Are they locked or flashing?
really it would help if you could identify the modem in use (label underneath maybe). Also make sure you are powering down the PC and SACM when changing any cables etc and that you power up the modem first before you power up the PC. If any firewalls are currently running you may want to temporarily disable them. If you power up the devices in the correct order and they still refuse to register then you may have an issue with the modem. |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
I will get the info now. But my modem does not seem to have the model on it.
|
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
Try the 192 address above with root as user name and as password. It should have details in the cofig page but DO NOT adjust any settings or you can make the situation even worse (costs money for an engineer to put that right if you screw it up).

Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
i had basically the same problem when i was installing broadband with a 250, so what i did was turn off modem (5mins) switch it on, register everything using another pc, once i had finished, switch off modem again 5 mins, connect to the pc that requires the connection, switched it on, waited until lights went solid, then ran the 'create a new connection' wizard which is in internet explorer.
then go to tools - internet options - connections - setup at the top, then make sure you choose 'connect to the internet' then hit 'next' choose 'setup my isp connection manually' then 'connect using a broadband connection thats is always on' finish the wizard, then leave it for a few mins, try connecting with internet explorer |

I think its a ntl:250

Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
What lights are lit when you power off the modem and pc, wait for a few mins and then power the modem up?
|
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
ok i did the 192.168.100.1
it comes up with some info - nothing that i can click on. No no. I just clicked on log in - there seems to be lots more options |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
ok I see reset to defaults - is it safe to click this?

What i do is to first have both computer and modem off. All cables are connected. I then turn on modem at mains and wait for ready and sysc to stop flashing. After this I turn on PC. Let PC settle then open browser and type autoreg....... |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
Hi RMIM
What IP address did you say you had? Try the reg IP of 80.5.178.26 in internet explorer instead of autoreg.net (same difference) and the usual AV off and firewall blah blah blah Check no proxy set in the LAN settings Sorry to be basic but you'd be surprised!! I noticed you said you had a router was it set to specify an IP address or set to automatically obtain one in the TCP/IP settings? |

My router is set to automatic - but has nothing to do with the problem - my pace cabletv/modem and router are fine. Its my mates ntl250 that refuses to register to any computer. |

Although my mate was given this new ntl250 modem by NTL, he has a cable box in his house with built in modem (pace one). Is it possible for NTL to activate this one? Till they bring a new working modem? |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
mmmm not heard of an 86.xx ip address before
Set top box Broadband and Cable Modem are registered quite differently. With the set top box Broadband it's the PC that is registered onto the system so you can't plug any old pc into it, you have to register it before it will work. This uses the address "start.ntl" to load the registration page and asks you to "name" the pc. With the Cable Modem it is the Modem that's registered, not the pc using address "autoreg.autoregister.net" to register so you can swop and change pc's as much as you like so long as you reboot the modem each time. |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
Ok I took my mates PC back to his place. I took MY STB to his place. Everything went well and we can fully access the net.
But his new modem will not work. I just found out that he used to have broadband at the same address a few years back but cancelled. He still has the old modem (which I tried, but same thing - does not go to registration page). Could it have something to with the fact that he used to have b-band but cancelled? (same account with NTL) Then signed up again? (I think I read something like this somewhere, but cant find it now.) |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
Might want to get NTL to look into his account properly and to make sure that his modem is working correctly. I'm amazed the STB worked on his account though but it would help point to the modem being faulty I would think.

All Im trying to do is verify that there is nothing wrong with his computer or signal in his house. (His cable tv works fine) BUT what I have noticed is with my STB it says connected at 10Mbps but with his SA modem 100Mbps. Does that mean anything? I have tried 4 different computers with his modem - none of them will load up the registration page. |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
He probably needs to readd the package on
Call Sales in the morning to get a new account setup He may even get a nice new shiny blue modem as well |

The thing that bothers me is that everything claims it's working. For example the temp registration ip address, the lights on the front of the modem say all is ok. Yet nothing loads up? Also what should I expect to get when I ping www.bbc.co.uk from a modem that has not been registered to that computer? |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
OK - my mate just phned NTL. They did not do anything - they told him there must be something wrong with your IE.
Do any of you believe this to be the problem? Why does it work on my STB but not his new modem? What the hell has IE got to do with anything. He has version 6. Please help. |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
OK - this time I phoned NTL. They gave me a proxy to add in IE but it still did not work.
What they did was to register the modem from their end and it worked right away. The chap said there must be something wrong with my IE not allowing secure web sites. He said NTL is a secure web site. I said to him why did it work with the other modem then? He said he can't explain it. (the other modem being my STB. His one is a SACM) Can anyone tell me what is going on? Although his internet is working - Im sure if he wants to upgrade his system at home and add a router he will not be able to register it himself without getting NTL on the phn, and Im sure they will refuse to add his router manually |
Re: Tricky Broadband/Ethernet Problem
Just get him to clone his mac information into the router when/ if he gets one and it will work fine ;) There are ways of getting around the problem of hardware not registering lol.
Thought it might be a problem registering the modem against the account somehow. Doubt if it's a problem with IE not allowing a HTTPS site to function correctly but you never know. |

But this was all a good waste of 4days. Formatting. Messing with 4 other computers. Trips up to his house back down to mine. What if he had to pay a computer engineer to fix the so called broken computer or broken IE? Do you think NTL would compensate him for the wasted time and money? Is it worth trying to get them to compensate him? |
