Ipod clicking !
Hi all
Well my Ipod will not work makes a sort of clicking sound and when i plug it in it displays an Ipod / sad face / ! and then refers me to www.apple.com/support/ipod. Tried restore / reset / update but nothing works !!!!! Any ideas Thanks Mike |
Re: Ipod clicking !
Is it the ipod nano, if so there's a lot of faults with them, screen freezing / cracking etc etc, had two sent one back, the gf has the other one, not impressed.
Sorry I can't help, just thought I would let you know that your not alone. |

Re: Ipod clicking !
A sad face icon means your hard drive is busted, its not your fault BTW, doing a simple reset wont work, the problem is that there is something physically wrong with the harddrive and the rest of the ipod cant communicate with it.
If your ipod is still under warranty, call up apple and they'll send you a replacement for free. |

The ipod is 15 months old !!!!!! so I guess I am well stuffed? Mike |
Re: Ipod clicking !
Well, you could try to call them anyway and chance your luck. Did you register it at the time with apple? I would phone them and say you think its about a year old but your not sure etc...

Re: Ipod clicking !
You could try a drive self test. Reset the Ipod and when the apple log appears press the back, foward and select buttons. This will access the engineers menu and you can either run all 5 test or select them idividually. In a few cases the hard drive heads have got stuck and a 'light' tap to the ipod on it's side will get it back up and spinning.

Re: Ipod clicking !
Er I erm have revived many an ipod by doing that, funnily enough we had loads of ipods come back as 'faulty' when the nanos came out and the video ipods, strange as 90% either had not fault or just needed the software updating! The service menu is pretty handy too.
Mike, did you intend to red rep me for that!? |

Re: Ipod clicking !
On the 4G iPods, hold down Menu and Select to reset the ipod until the Apple logo shows, then immediately hold down both the Select and Play buttons until the "Disk Mode" screen appears.
I think this is the service menu he mentions. |
Re: Ipod clicking !
Yup, and on the mini's hold down menu and select until it resets and when the apple logo appears hold down select and previous, the apple logo should then reverse and then let go and the service menu should appear. If you have an ipod that starts up and shows a disk error or grumpy ipod icon then you can also try putting it into Disk Mode, reset your ipod, then hold down Next and Previous when the apple logo appears. This can cure ipods that won't mount on your computer and allow you to update them and restore them via USB. Oh and what cant the service menu do? It can run a series of self-tests such as ram test, cache test, output test, hard disk scan (bad sectors) and LCD test. Glad I could help!

Re: Ipod clicking !
There is a strange alternative which might fix the problem. I read a post where a guy said he took the back cover off his ipod and put a folded business card on the hard drive and closed it with the business card wedged between the back cover and the hard drive, I tried it as well and with two folded business cards it did the job, the ipod works perfectly again. The clicking noise you hear is because when the hard drive spins up to a speed it starts moving causing the clicking noise, giving it that little support completely solves the problem. It took a while getting the cover off but with a flat screwdriver working from one of the corners to the side of the ipod will get it off.
