i think this is good news, i think they should 'group' matches to be televised, so say the rights will go to NTL, they show the vast majority of matches for the price they pay, others shown on sky, as sky pay for them and then some on FTA channels such as the BBC. its what he EC want apparently and i agree with the idea, aslong as some matches are accesable to all, the problem is if NTL earn the rights to the lot or vast majority then they have a limited viewership, which in my view is bad for football, so there has to be some leeway.

Like the price quoted £10 a month, just depending on the amount of games they will offer.

yep, if thats purely a football channel as simon duffy mentioned about for the rights to all televised matches, i would have to rethink my position of having SKY as the only pay tv provider and shifting to NTL ;)

bet I wont be able to get it tho, so it will go from been able to watch on sky sports 1 to some ntl channel that they dont put on the ntl analogue.

Its the uk's only cable company not the uk's dominent cable company or is there a 2nd I dont know about?

havent the EC insisted that any one company can only have rights to 50% of the live games it could be a killer for sky if they lose it

which they (for that exact reason) wont

If the EC have their way Sky won't have a choice. Sky won't be able to influence the ECs decision at all and have said it is a matter for the EC and not for them already.

On the other hand, even if the EC don't interfere, apparently the new bidding system will make it easier for other companies to win one of the 4 packages (remember that Sky won all 4 packages, it wasn't one pack) and therefore i think Sky would have to bid A HELLUVA LOT to win all 4 anyway as with NTL and Setanta bidding the cost of winning all 4 will almost definitely cost Sky more, resulting no doubt in even higher prices for Sky customers unless Sky would be prepared to swallow the loss of profit. Lets not forget, that the BBC, ITV, C4 and Five have already dislayed muted interest too although everyone on this forum including me probably think they are kidding themselves.

I can't wait for the bidding to start personally, it's exciting in itself, forget the footy!

NTL AND ITV JOIN FORCES IN MOVE TO BREAK SKY'S GRIP ON PREMIERSHIP

ITV (ITV.L: Quote, Profile, Research) and NTL (NTLI.O: Quote, Profile, Research) have announced that they are to join forces in their bid for the next round of rights to show Premier League TV, and break BSkyB's (BSY.L: Quote, Profile, Research) exclusive grip to show the big matches. They are thought to be willing to spend around 170 million pounds a year for half the games that are available in the next auction, for the 2007 to 2010 seasons. A letter outlining their interest has been sent to the chairmen of the league's 20 constituent clubs

If I remember correctly both ITV and NTL have in the passed both broken football rights contracts. So why would any football club want to deal with them.
http://www.abcmoney.co.uk/news/1420051123.htm

Quote:

A spokesperson for the club pointed out that both the companies had a history of pulling out of contracts. NTL had backed out of 40 games in 2000 after having second thoughts about the expected viewership numbers. ITV had also pulled out of an earlier contract with the club after its digital set up failed.

Very true - ITV more spectacularly than ntl.

Hoever, it's really sad that the EU have given in and I think you will find that Sky will get every single game despite them saying that 1/6 will be available to other companies.

The only company which MIGHT get one package will be Setanta Sports. Nobody else will even get a look in.

Highlights will probably stay with the BBC.

LONDON - Government ministers as high up as Gordon Brown intervened ahead of yesterday's deal giving BSkyB the chance to bid for all but one in six of Premiership games, and softened up European competition authorities, according to reports.

The Daily Mail today accused ministers of smoothing the way for a deal that favoured Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB. It quoted a source familiar with the negotiations, who claimed that the Chancellor had met with European competition commissioner Neelie Kroes.

"After that, the commission had a change of heart. It had all the hallmarks of a coordinated lobbying campaign," the source told the Daily Mail.

The EC had initially adopted a tough stance on ending the monopoly that Sky currently enjoys on live Premiership football.

Early in the long negotiation process, it wanted the TV rights owner, the Premier League, to sell two equal packages of 69 games and allow Sky to only bid for one.

As negotiations progressed, the EC ruled this out, but in September it threatened the league with legal action for backtracking. In October, the EC was pushing for five packages of games, of which Sky could only have four.

However, the deal announced yesterday consists of six packages of 23 games each and allows Sky to won all but one of them. Sky's buying power, coupled with NTL's assertion that it is not interested given the terms, is likely to give it 83% of games, with the rest going to a terrestrial broadcaster, possibly ITV.

NTL said yesterday that it was "unlikely" to make a bid, confirming its recent statement that it would need to be able to show half of all games to make the rights viable.
Bloody currupt politicians.

Well we know labour are in bed with murdoch but I dont think its all bad check this.

Quote:

ITV and NTL had planned to telecast most of the matches on a pay channel and the remaining matches on the free-to-air channels.
So we would be subscribing to sky sports, some of us to premiership plus and also would need to pay for a 3rd channel. How many would ntl and itv have put on free to air channels, and more importantly how many would have been on itv1 the only channel ntl and itv own available to every tv set in the country.
