*All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

The first information that Cable Forum received from ntl regarding an increase to 10meg broadband can be found in this Cable Forum news article.

FAQ's in part 1 of the thread:

Will the service be capped?
yes, there will be a 75gig/ month cap on the 10meg service that current 3meg users will be upgraded to

Will I need a new modem?
It appears that ntl 120 or later modems will have no problems with the speeds, however older modems and Set Top Box connections will need to be upgraded. Ntl have not released any information on this process yet that i have seen.

When are the new speeds going to be launched?
ntl have stated "By the end of 2006, the roll out of this new product portfolio will be complete."

My mate down the pub says he has already got 10meg, is he lying?
Quite possibly not, it appears that ntl are testing the 10meg service, and I have not noticed a particular pattern of who/ where is being tested.

Will the price change?
Ntl have stated that there are no plans to change monthly prices

What will the upload speed be?
Users who are testing the 10meg service at the moment have reported upload speeds that suggest it will be 512k.

What do i have to do to get 10meg?
We know ntl are upgrading 3meg customers first, but as for what to do... sit and wait for information from ntl!

Please post any further discussion of 10meg in this thread, and this thread only.

What about the Terayon TJ210 modems I have one of these, Which I bought from NTL as I didn't want to pay a monthly charge.

You are now paying the monthly charge though, you have lost the £5 a month modem owners discount.

Taken from the NTL statement which is here
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/...ed-as-standard

"By the end of 2006, the roll out of this new product portfolio will be complete. There are no plans to change monthly prices. However, some customers will need to upgrade their modem. Further details will be announced at launch."

so i wouldn't take it at gospel, ntl havent posted anything about the upgrades since the original post on the 8th of august.

Well the greater speed would be the 10Mbps and I would think the greater usage is the 75GB limit that comes with it (for the initial upgrades anyway). Our sources currently indicate that the upgrades will begin in Mid November. :)

I've had no connection since around 7.30 this morning so thought I'm being upgraded to 10mb. When I got my connection back I did a speed test and I'm still on 3mb. Went to ntl's service page and found this

"ntl broadband customers in the , DN31, NG2, NG15, NG17, NG18, NG19, NG20, NG21. and NG31 postcode area may be experiencing an intermittant or complete loss of connection, this is due to a local fault. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause" :(:(

Not sure if this is to do with the upgrades or not, but due to a PC and a cat related incident (dont ask) i had to rebuild my comp started to pull some files off usenet and since then my connection is unstable. It is hovering between 6 and 10 meg before settling down to 5 meg then jumping back to 10, i haver tried rebooting everything still doing it.

SMHarman 05-11-2005 22:41

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

THere are to be some new plans (I imagine) so at the moment the three tiers will all be 10Mb with differing caps and then there will be another (possibly slower - 5MB?) with no cap, possibly the same price.

I never mentioned plans, I was referring to now. :)

The new 10Mbps will have a 75GB cap for the upgraded 3mbps users, and obviously a lower cap for the 2M and 1M users when they get upgraded next year. So at the end of the day, everyone will be on 10Mbps, with differing limits based on the price you pay.

As for uncapped, that would be telling ;) , but I think you may be pleasently surprised. :D

The idea of everyone on 10mb with individual usage limits (and I take it, charges to suit??), suits me down to the ground.

I have been monitoring my usage for about 6 months now with Netmeter (excellent little prog). I am using approximately 7gig a month. A charge that would reflect my moderate usage when compared to the 30gig limit is more than welcomed by me

Well the new (highest) 10M service is 75GB/month. You can reasonably assume the middle tier will be more than 7GB/month, and the lowest one less - so when the new services come in, you will be able to 'move down' to a cheaper service (as indeed will I).

Will we be pleasantly surprised with the upload speed Paul M? I'm personally hoping for at least 512k or more

it is believed that the upload will be in the region of 500k based on reports from those who's experienced temporary increases of their speed to 8meg-10meg.

The only indications of upload speed we have are 500K, it seems to be very hard to get any information on it, even from our 'sources'.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

i think i remember reading in these forums some time ago
that if a few 3mb user of the same UBR
or something (thats whats it called?) utilise all their upload bandwidth at the same it will slow every1 down of that same UBR
as they dont have that much upload bandwidth

around a year or 2 ago i played alot of online games
and had alot of problems
customer support did some kinda area utilisation test or something
and it was like 95% at the time

i know NTL must have done some equipment upgrades for the last 2 years
but have they done enough to sustain a good service after these upgrades??

jtwn 07-11-2005 00:46

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Time will tell. The cable channels are shared to the node, which is connected to the ubr. Apparently is 37mb on a channel, shared between 2-300 people (? how it would work in my village if everybody had taken up the service and was using it at the same time).

It would be very very slow! lolol
but NTL can do things if your node gets saturated. (not sure what but ive heard about them doing this at some university sites! )

Chrysalis 07-11-2005 12:12

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Well the question is, some of us have saturation now, and ntl also have saturated peering points. These still remain so why do you think ntl will sort these out after 10mbit is rolled out if they wont now. Seems to be the general perception that a max "possible" speed of 10mbit is preffered to a stable lower max speed.

Rone 07-11-2005 13:46

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

It will be a problem if everyone wants their 75gig all on the same day. ;)
Personally i would settle for a steady lower speed, say 5meg, and not have to monitor what everyones downloading. :(

As we now seem to be moving away from paying for speed to paying for volume of data, will NTL be charging if we go over the limit and, if so, will we be able to "bank" any unused volume?

Paul 07-11-2005 14:26

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Rollover bandwidth, cool idea, bit like Orange (and I'm sure others do) with minutes, you have the next billing period to use the excess bandwidth or it is lost forever.
Additionally, will Broadband Plus usage be counted? Seems a bit tight to charge for high bandwidth content and charge again if you use the service? It is a point that has been raised a number of times, but so far answers have not appeared.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

From what I can see charging will be based on a mix of speed and usage.

Now this is all speculation on my part but maybe there will be bands for megadownloaders who want lots but not as bothered with speed, home server runners who want to run a server on home service so don't need service guarentees or bandwidth of business but want a balance between up and download speeds, mail users who don't do much at all so get a small cap on a lower speed but no limit on email (SMTP/POP).

Again please note that this is pure speculation by me, no promises or otherwise to be implied whatever. This is NOT official in any way.

Can't see a bank working. What ideally we want is to prevent contention so we don't want users banking up usage over a hot, sunny summer then all trying to use it up at the same time in the winter. Again this is not official, I have no idea what is planned in that level of detail.

Nice that they list Peterborough, we rarely get a mention on the service status page.

I wonder how long till us 1/2mbit customers see some kind of upgrade (crosses fingers)

Service upgrades will result in a loss of service in the Swansea, Bromley, Luton, Guildford, Peterborough, Hersham, Colchester, Watford, Ashford, Brent and surrounding areas.

Does this mean Brent in London? i live in NW9 ex-c/w and finally got activated so does this mean if i order 3mb i too will be upgraded to 10mb

There are alot of places that arent mentioned on the service update page, although i suppose maintence doesnt have to happen on every area that gets upgraded. There is no mention of Stoke on Trent where I live, just hope the 10mb comes here aswell this week.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

I think people are reading too much into the service status page, those are regular weekly updates and not really anything to do with the 10M upgrades. These are unlikely to be automatic, at least to start with.

If you think back to the 3M upgrades, it was initially for new customers only, although you could also request a manual upgrade. I would expect a similar pattern again. Anyone who thinks there will be a wholesale upgrade to 10Mbps overnight, or even over 2/3 nights is almost certainly going to be disappointed.

We currently expect it to be available from the 8th, but that does not mean everyone on 3Mbps will be running 10Mbps by the 9th (or even 10th) that simply will not happen. It will almost certainly be a gradual process over the next few weeks.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

thanks, that doesn't look hopefull as from what i can tell the tailfin only has a 10mbit ethernet connection on the user side :(

I might have to try and get an upgraded modem from NTL sometime (we bought the current one back in 2000/2001 before they rented them).
