6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
Hi guys much appreciated if anyone can help
ive done searches but there are so many others with problems but didnt see anything same as mine basically i have this spec machine: Asus A7N8X-X SKT A Nforce2 AGP X8 Sound USB 2.0 Motherboard AMD Athlon XP2600 333mhz 120gb hd 1.5gb ram 400w psu also had a radeon 128mb pro 9800 card which was working fine but latest games starting to not keep up so got a PNY 6600GT ok i removed all ATI drivers and card from machine beforehand with that driver cleaner etc and add remove programs etc... installed 6600gt ok with drivers that came with disk. think they are 7.7.7.2 played some games okish (call of duty 2 demo, medal of honor games etc..) but tried some others like GTR FIA Racing and Heroes of the pacific and i get like white lines at the menus / some garbled text menus and everything seems to jerk. ive tried mucking about with in game graphics options and that hasnt worked and also tried the nvidia options on the toolbar which i cant find anything that will get rid of these lines / garbled text. ive tried running that 3ddemo05 program and everything it runs (tests) seems really slow. is this right?? also when i go into the bios, going through some of the menus the options seem to be slow and flick slightly. didnt get this with the radeon. not sure what options to change in the bios if any. oh i had to change the CPU speed from 133mhz to 200mhz when i first built the pc as the ahtlon chip was showing up as 1.5ghz in windows. on 200mhz it comes up as it should. tried putting this back anyway but still same Please help!! thanks a bunch!! p.s i did try updating the nvidia drivers but it sill happened so done everything from fresh and stuck with what came with the card for now (as the drivers seemed fairly recent and the games i was trying were older) |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
Firstly waht PSU do you have, as in make an model (all 400W are not equal). Have you had the chance to try the card in another machine? Have you had a look at BIOS update here: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...&model=A7N8X-X
Nothing GPU specific is listed but you never know, it may also solve the problem of you having to manually set the CPU FSB as there are updates for that! Do you have fast writes on and AGP set to 8x together with an aperture of 128MB? If all else fails you might like to try a complete OS reinstall with the latest nVidia drivers and see how that goes. |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
latest drivers are 81.85, link here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.85.html this link may help also: http://www.mysuperpc.com/vcu/tweakin...settings.shtml |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
ok thanks for that link. i tried the latest drivers and they made games that were working ok with older drivers, worse! i.e. quake 4 and fear run okish with 7.7.7.2 drivers that came with the card but i get that white line tearing and jerking with new latest drivers

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
sounds like you have remains of the ati drivers on the system, try and clear it off, there are tools out there that should remove all remnants of the ati software, most people format and reinstall on such a major hardware change

Indeed; ATI do their own, very effective driver cleaner; it's called cat-uninstaller.exe and you can get it from the Utilities section of their driver pages. It's also uncluded in ATI's more recent display drivers sets (i.e. the downloads including display driver, capture driver and Control Panel/Center) - you find it as ATI - Software Uninstall Utility in Add/Remove Programs when you've installed the driver set. Uninstall your NVidia drivers (the cat-uninstaller shouldn't remove anything from them, but best to be sure), reboot, run the file and reboot as required. Run your Driver Cleaner again, just to be sure, and make sure you remove program starting references as well as other registry entries. Then delete (if you haven't already) the ATI folder on your C: drive and any ATI folders in Program Files. Do a search in your Windows folder for ati*.* and delete the lot. Then empty the Recycle Bin and reboot. It may also be worthwhile reinstalling your chipset drivers and your installation of DirectX. Reboot again and reinstall your NVidia drivers. This process should remove any ATI remnants from your system (as you probably know, both ATI's and NVidia's uninstalls are woefully inadequate) and make sure that any possible damage to your chipset drivers and DirectX installation are repaired. Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
Not being funny but do you have the power connector plugged into the graphics card?

yep its in. i done exactly what patrickp said. booted quake up with fresh install and latest nvidia drivers from their site and its got all lines in the opening video as soon as it loads up. stuttering and everything. 7.7.7.2 drivers that came with the card work fine??!

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
Have you checked if there any patches for the game from the makers web site, in case there's any probs working on that card?
Just checked, nothing out there yet patch wise:( Did you do a total reformat and reinstall first? Daft question too, is there onboard graphics still live on your motherboard? Press Del key as your PC starts to go into bios, check out whats what in there. |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
cant find any patches no
|
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
What about the other questions above?
|
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
thanks for trying to help...
didnt do a total reformat no. in bios, i looked through all options and didnt see anything to do with onboard graphics... |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
The first post struck a cord. I have just replaced a TI4200 with a 6800gt and had the same probs u have, tearing textures and blocky sections with white lines on monitor 2.
Noticed my fan speeds droppin a fraction when i refreshed the desktop or started a game. rigged up a spare psu to feed the graphics card on its own and problemo solved, well almost. I still get flashes on monitor2 now an again but otherwise.. Best recommendations for a strong power supply? |

Martinell, does Marge know you're using what looks like same avatar:)

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
The 6800GT is a gutsy card for stealing power from the PSU.....I had a 500w power supply and had to change it the other week to a new 600w one as my comp kept rebooting. Its worked fine since. I'd check your PSU and do a fresh install.

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
thanks for the reponses guys. some games work pretty much flawlessly. my PSU currently is 400w (plus this is a 6600gt not 6800gt). maybe ill try a more powerful PSU then
quick q, as i said when i go into the BIOS, scrolling about makes the screen flick slightly and selecting things seem slightly slow. my ATI card was flawless in this area. Any ideas? once again, thanks |

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
OK i tried a new HD with just comlpete install of windows + GPU + drivers and still got the lines on the games i was having problems with
So thinking of getting a PSU. Seen these ones on ebay, but from the reviews people are saying they are not really 600w? Can anyone shed some light thanks people, getting there slowly... http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=61302 this one seems the same but no reviews so anything about it not reaching 600w... http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=89191 |

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
sounds to me like a case of video card over heating and artifacts.
some of the older 6*** nvidia cards get really hot an if theres already heat build up in the pc then your gonna have video probs. Also some of the lower price bracket cards have cheap n nasty fans on them that dont quite do the job there suppose too. As for power, i ran a 2600xp @ 2.2ghz, 2 hdds, 1 dvd writer, 1 tv card, a nf7ver2.0 and leadtek 6800gt all on a bog standard 350watt psu with out any problems at all so i realy doubt this is a psu problem. currently i run a amd64 3000, an8ultra nforce 4 mobo, a 120gig hdd, a 300gig hdd, 1 dvd writer, 1 tv card, 1 sound card and pcie 7800gtx all on a 400 watt hyper psu again no problems at all. My moneys on heat. maybe worth you looking into better vid cooling or tryin to increase air flow within the pc itself by adding more case fans. |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
i felt the card to see if it was burning hot after playing some games after about half hour. it was hot but not burning hot... im gonna try it in another machine...
oh and also my case has got 3fans in it. 2 are wired up and on... so is the fan on the GPU... |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...erheating&meta=
6600gts are well known for overheating :erm: , and simlpy putting ur hand to the card to test is not gonna tell u anything, what ur feeling is most likely the heatsink which is sitting on the gpu which has a fan blowing onto it and keeping it cool, so its not going to be as hot as the core this however doesnt mean the gpu is getting equally cooled. what temps does ur drivers controlls say the gpu is at? |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
i havent checked (im at work at the mo). how do i check the GPU temps?

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
I havent overclocked anything. well not yet anyway as i dont really know how. what would explain the display in the BIOS flashing slightly and having a slight delay when scrolling through options...?
|
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
from what i understand rivatuner will tell u the temps roughly, you can get this at www.guru3d.com but some older drivers will display the temps in the driver options in the controll panel.
To give u an example my 7800 sits at 49c idle an it rises to 53c under load, i wouldnt expect a 6600gt to get any hotter than 55c. But as ur intentin to try the card in another pc then that may be just as handy espically if there is no change in the way it acts. |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
It may also be that you have a faulty card.

If u look at the previous link i posted you see that most of the reports of 6600s over heating are on cards not overclked. And by sayin they are well known for over heating does not mean that all will suffer from it. Also u have a amd64 cpu with cool n quiet , asuming ur mobo supports it this will dramatically drop temps throughout the pc, it does this by cycling the voltages an speeds depending on the load. heres an example of my voltages an temps with cool n quiet running. and i to only have 2 fans. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wasted.d/tempsvoltages.jpg an this is in a room with a temp of 35c.:D |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
http://www.lavalys.com/ the free version of everest here will give all temps that have monitoring

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
guys i tried it on my dell machine. (not sure what psu) but its about 2 year old pc. 768ram 2.8ghz etc... and the card works fine on the games i had problems with on the other pc. so can i assume that its the motherboard on the other pc causing problems?

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
PSU was 250w (less than the 400w!!) but theres also another fan seperate above the processor. does this make it more than 250w? guess not as the PSU said 250w on it. Motherboard 99% to blame?

no i mean the radeon wasnt powerful enough for new games. graphics wise. so upgraded the card to a 6600GT

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
oh i see what you mean, but i thought cos that was ATI and this is NVIDIA or something. Maybe more powerful card etc. I dunno? Ive eliminated pretty much everything else....
Plus its weird that most games seem ok, its just a few, and it always seems to be on the intro movies / menus and then when u get into the heart of the game they seem alright. but it takes a while to get there |
Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
well, guys, ive exhausted all the options. disabled and enabled stuff in the bios, changed RAM about etc... and still the same.

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
I had a problem once with my 6600gt, it drove me nuts for ages  .. and i tried various drivers both in win98 and win2K, and it didnt resolve it... My main problem was the card was stopping/freezing every second for a split second within games.. and the videos/mpg in the menus wera also doing it sometimes with corrupted graphics.. mainly nfs1.. it turned out to be my USB wireless adaptor causing the problem trying to find the other one.. try taking out usb peripherals?? maybe this may shed some light on the issue?..

Re: 6600gt graphics problems (white lines / slow)
Zinglebarb could be right, dalboy. There are several factors to consider here: Dell are well known to use PSUs that, although labelled as low power output, produce whatever power they do very reliably. On the other hand, a lot of generic PSUs may have a label on them that has a high rating but a) this rating is often somewhat inflated and b) whatever power they do produce may not be very reliable. And even a genuinely high output PSU may not be producing enough power on the rails you need. IIRC graphics cards with auxiliary connectors are usually drawing power from the 12 volt rail, which a lot of PSUs fail to supply adequately. There's also the question of what the PSU is being called upon to drive: the Dell machine may be drawing less power than yours does.
It's usually best to go for known good brands like Antec and Enermax; PSUs from manufacturers like these will often outperform generic PSUs with apparently higher ratings. What make of PSU are you using? |
