Word language problem

1 Attachment(s)
I have a problem with word.

For some reason I have UK & US set in my word languages, How do I get rid of the US version, its most annoying to find US spelling in printed work because it acepts the US spelling.

I've even save UK as default in NORMAL.DOT but still no luck.

Re: Word language problem

Try setting the actual language that Windows uses by going into Regional Settings, that might work, if it's not already set as English UK.

If you find out, tell me, because I've been trying to get the damn thing to use UK English as the default on the normal.dot template for ages!

But even when I change it and it prompts "changes have been made to normal.dot, do you want to save them?" it *still* defaults to US! :grind:

It works fine with every other template I've got :banghead:

Have you tried selecting English (UK) as the default dictionary under spelling and grammar?

Re: Word language problem

Set your regional settings correctly in the control panel, make sure you check all tabs and then check your options in the Office software applications. Also in my installation I got a "Microsoft Office Language settings" tool in the Office/Office tools folder.

Yep???? In your regional settings how many languages do you have listed when you click "languages" and then "details"?

What version of Word is it?
Just found this, hope it's not still the case :(

Hi,
I seem to continually re-set my computer through both
Start/Settings etc and in Word itself to UK English. Yet
somehow or other it finds its way back to US English.
I can't tell you how infuriating this is. It makes me
look so ignorant if I type something in US English.

I need to totally and utterly remove US English from my
computer so that it can never ever let me spell something
incorrectly. How do I do this/??
THanks
Diana

You cannot. The dictionary for US and UK English is the same file.

All I can say is that it may be a "feature" but to be sure I would double check all regional and language settings (including Keyboard layout) and if it still won't hold then I would say the quote in my last post is correct :(

Try...

Start > Control Panel > Reigional and Language Settings

Click on the Languages Tab, Click Details Button and highlight English (US) and then click Remove, then OK, then Apply.

Log off or restart and log back on.

Hope this helps...

This is the way I always set it for spell checking: first, go to Tools -> Options -> Spelling & Grammar tab. Click the Dictionaries... button. CUSTOM DIC should be selected in the next box. Select English (UK) in the Language box, click OK and OK again.

To set English (UK) as the default language in Word, go to Format -> Style... click the Modify... button, then the Format button and click Languge... in the list. Select English (UK) and click OK and OK again. Don't click Apply.

This has set English (UK) as the Normal style for this document, but not for Word in general. Click the Organizer button, select Normal in the left box and click the Copy button in the middle. This will copy the document's version of Normal that you've just set to Word's Global Normal. Then you can click Close and exit your document.

Thanks for this, but it still doesn't work, however it's given me a clue and I think I've finally discovered *WHY* I'm having this problem!

I've got the default keyboard set up as "English (United States)" because that's the key layout that I learned to touch type on.

It seems that this doesn't *just* set the keyboard layout, but when you go into Word, it tells Word to use United States English as the default language *over-riding* any other settings I may want to use!!!

So either I'm going to have to get used to a new keyboard layout or keep manually changing language every time I start a new document in Word!

Bloody Micro$oft and their bloody "this will be useful, let's make it happen and not give someone the option to turn the bloody feature off!!!"

:grind: :banghead:

I'm still having no luck, the KB is set to UK - English, the Laptops regional setting are set to UK - English.

The problem now is that accepts both the UK spelling for REALISE and the US REALIZE which is a pain, I've done repair for office 2000 but this hasn't helped.

Look under Tools/ Options/ Spelling & Grammar and click on Dictionaries, then hit Edit (it will warn you that it's about to turn off spell checking)

Have a look in there and see if you've accidentally told it to accept "realize" as a valid spelling by hitting "add" by mistake when you were spell checking.

I have asked the IT bod at work to look at this because no matter what I do whenever I log in to outlook at work it defauts to the US dictionary :fit:

Will let you know if I get a result.https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/01/10.gif

As a last resort, and with the usual caveats about registry editing - look at registry key

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0 \Common\LanguageResources

Check InstallLanguage key. If it is set to 409, change to 809.

unrelated, maybe, but I have been using OpenOffice 'Writer' recently, in preference to Microsoft 'Word', I have the dictionary set to 'UK English' and it correctly highlights 'color' as wrong, but still accepts both 'realise' and 'realize' - go figure :dozey:

Thanks for the info but as I don't use Outlook at home it doesn't bother me. Just such a pain at work though.

You'll probably find a few American spellings allowed by the UK dictionaries - they were probably compiled by Americans.

Re: Word language problem

Removing the US language from "Start... Programs... Microsoft Office Tools... Microsoft Office Language Settings" should be all that's needed. It's Word - does it's own thing a lot of the time. It's one of the first things I do after installing Word/Office. Some English words do use Z instead of S - the usual exceptions to the rule that you get in English that make it such a joy. Additionally, the idea that Z is American and S is English is a bit dated - both have become acceptable just so long as you remain consistant in your document.
