What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

I am keen to find out the amount of users who browse the net at different screen resolutions.
We are currently in one of those times of change again and I'm sure in the next 2 years maximum, nearly everyone will be browsing with a monitor set at a resolution of 1024 x768 or greater.

So what do you browse the net at ?

(For those that dont know....Right click on your desktop and select properties, then settings, and it should tell you there.)

I can't believe it's more than a year since we last did this topic. ;)

Mine is unchanged ... 1280x1024 at work, 1024x768 at home. :)

It seems like only yesterday since that thread ;)

1024x768 at work (enforced) 800x600 at home (choice). I prefer the 800x600 size.

It will be interesting to see how it's chaned in the last 12 months.

1280 x 1024 for all my home pc's, 1280 x 800 on my widescreen laptop at work. :)

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

Yeah its been a while. I am still designing sites so they display fine for 800 x 600 but also fine for those higher too, but will eventually be ditching that group.

At home I am running my main PC on 1280 x 1024 and sometimes higher. Looks good on a 19" monitor.

Downstairs however on my other PC, I have a 14" monitor that cant do anything more than 800 x 600. Its sooooo old. I'd have thought it would blow up or break down by now.

1280x960, 'cos anything less than 85Hz drives me mental! if i buy a beter monitor it'd go as high as it can though, subject to the above :)

just changed mine to 1153 X 864 (can a passing mod please change my vote) Thanks.

Anything higher causes problems with my glasses.

1280 by 1024 on my main pc at home, 1024 by 768 at work my choice, laptop is on the same at home and most of the other computers I use are. I prefer 1280 x 1024, used it ever since I got my 17" mointor several years ago.

My glasses must be iffy, as we have a 19" monitor (same at work).

My fileserver is 1024x768 - my laptop is 1024x768 - may main pc is 1280x1024 and my wife runs her pc at 800x600

Mine has increased since I now have a TFT monitor. Use 1280x1024 when ever possible.

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

At home I use 1600 x 1200 - that's at a 75Hz refresh rate; doesn't seem too much of a problem. At work I use 1024 x 768, but I'd use greater with a better (and larger) monitor.

It amazes me how many people work on spreadsheets and databases at 800 x 600 - you can hardly see any of what you're working on!

It also amazes me how many people at work happily use a monitor set at a 60Hz refresh rate, which I can hardly look at (certainly for any length of time) without getting a headache...

Won't go above 1024x768.

1024x768, 85Hz or above is optimum here. :)

1024x768 is the work lappy, 1280x1024 for the nice Home PC

1680x1050 - you don't have that as an option (hehe)

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

add 1200x900 its what I use, allows more space then 1024x768 and keeps the refresh rate above 75hz. 17"

1024 x 1280, portrait mode nearly all the time.

1280x1024 on my Samsund 19" tft, much better on the eyes (at least for me).

In which case you'd most likely be making a big mistake because if you design sites that aren't visible in someone's chosen browser resolution they're liable to take their custom to someone who doesn't tell them that "this site is best viewed by going around to the designer's house and looking at it on his PC!"

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

I see what you mean. I guess it depends on who the target audeince will be.
Ideally you would have to design two sites and tell it to auto pick according to resolution.

Ideally people would design their sites according to the W3C and Accessibility guidelines so that resolution and font sizes don't matter.

Sorry, but I think it *is* relevant because, from what I can tell from the OP, it seems that somene's going to be basing how they design a site (partly) on this information :)

1280 by 1024 at home at 75hz and crystal clear.

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

1600x1200 @ 85hz on 22ins visible monitor.

Its not a case of people just raising the resolution over time, its a case of how big your monitor is.

What happened to the 1440x900 option? :) I browse sually at 1440x900 on my Widescreen 17" Laptop when im at my desk, I browse at 1280x1024

Same here (work PCs as well). Some of the PC's I deal with at work are limited to 1024x768 though, and my Mac Mini is currently set to 1600x1200 with large fonts as it looks so much nicer.

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

At home 1280x1024 on a 17" CRT.

And is it me, or does it irk me that a great percentage of the TFT screens at the college I go to are not set at their native resolution, thereby resulting in a horrid blurry out of focus image?

I change the settings on all of the ones I go on to their proper resolution - it looks much better. I found one running 800x600 or a 17" TFT - not a nice sight I can tell you!

Shame the IT department hasn't twigged that alot of the new PCs with TFTs are running at a horrid low resolution of 800x600 on a 17" TFT.

And that their new PCs with CRT screens are running at a horrible 60Hz refresh rate (pukes). I would have thought that putting them on the most appropriate setting for good performance and also for user comfort before rolling them out in public would be a priority at least, but no. *dives into display settings control panel after logon*

I think it comes down to poor eyesight (possibly they're too vain to wear the appropriate glasses?): their eyes must have poor acuity not to see the flicker on a screen refreshing at 60Hz, and they like the 800 x 600 display because it makes the letters nice and BIG!

Of course, with reasonable eyesight and only a little nous, you realise that a higher resolution gets you more real estate on the screen: being able to see the whole page of a document at once as you work on it, or a much larger area of a spreadsheet, means you can work much more effectively. I often post spreadsheets from work to myself at home just because, with the higher resolution, I can get stuff worked out so much faster and more effectively than at work.

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

well 17" flat screens have a stupid native res, it is set too high so you need a 19" to see the text without damaging your eyes. I would guess this means a lot of people set 17" below their native resolution.

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

Most web site stats programs will be recording that sort of info

here is an example : http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

And don't forget not everyone uses a browser on full screen, so all that space may not in fact be available

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

1280x1024 on my main PC, This is the highest res I can run while maintaining 85hz.
1024x768 on the laptop as this is the native res of the display.

Re: What resolution monitor setting do you browse at ?

I've got a few monitors plugged into my main system at home, well 3, all good old fashioned CRT's, but nice quality ones.

1600x1200@85Hz on my main 21"
1280x960@75Hz on my 2 17" (I prefer the square pixels, 1280x1024 just doesn't look quite right to me somehow).

Server runs
1024x768@75Hz on a 17"

HTPC runs
1024x768 on the WS TV in the lounge

Laptop runs
1400x1050
