ebay

Hi all

Just wanted to check something. received an email today, supposedly from ebay saying that either myself or someone else has made fraudulent bids through my ebay account (which I have never used) and I needed to respond to the email within 24 hours.
Followed the link and it came up to a section where it asked for my debit/credit card details. (which I have never registered with ebay.) but the thing that made me suspicious is it also asked for my card pin number.

Can someone else just confirm my suspicions this is a fake email

I can't imagine any 'proper' company EVER asking you for your card pin number. So it sure looks dodgy to me.

Absolutely, it's a scam...

You never need the pin number for on-line transactions, only the last three digits on the back of the card.

Remember it's a PIN number - Personal - don't ever reveal it to anyone.

that is exactly what I thought. As soon as i saw that I immediately exited the "sign in" page.

Anyone else received one of these emails?

I had one recently that was VERY convincing - then Paul showed me the header and it was a scam!
Paul's sister also got one and clicked on the link - not sure if she sent any details or not but we made her cancel her credit card that she uses with Pay Pal just to be sure.
I've never had an unsolicited email from Ebay or PayPal, other than to confirm my details when I signed up.

Definite scam... absolutely 100% sure it's a scam (it's my job :D ). No website should ever ask you for your PIN number, in fact no member of staff at your bank is entitled to know your PIN, let alone a website. There is no need for anybody except you - and you alone - to know your PIN.

You should report it to ebay - they actually have a good record of dealing with the people behind these sites.

That email is a scam.

One thing with eBay (& Paypal, I think). If you recieve any kind of warning email from them, they will also send it as a message to you, so it's on your "My Account" screen when you log in. So, you can always log in to ebay to check.

i can't remember my log in name or password, as registered and never actually used it

thanks for all the feedback from everyone, much appreciated

Re: ebay

forward the email to spoof@ebay.com

they will then confirm if it was really from them or not, however it certainly sounds like a phising attempt, the rule is, forward to spoof if in doubt, the same goes for paypal - spoof@paypal.com

Re: ebay

Yep its definately a scam.
If you hover tyour mouse over the address you will probably see it isnt totally real...... eg. instead of it being something like www.ebay.co.uk/myEbay, scams will redirect you somewhere else, eg. www..ebay.hg5.co.uk/t5/MyEbay.

No one will ask you for your credit details or to confirm them over E-mail so you can delete this type of email straight away.

I don't know why these muppets ask for the pin number? I can see it being the security code on the sig strip, expiry date and account number..
But why your pin.. thats no use unless you actually have the card is it?

Because they can program one of their blank cards with your card number and use your pin with their card in the 'hole in the wall'!

And doesn't ZoneAlarm stop you from putting your password and stuff into a fake ebay site? I'm sure i saw that somewhere on there.

I dont use a software firewall like ZA, I have a router with firewall built-in... as for them icons, they are just shortcuts to some of the programs I use a lot. :)

Yes, but you need to enable it.

And some of us use our router's hardware firewall _and_ Zone Alarm. ;-)

Basically if you get "ANY!!!!!!" email from ebay/paypal/bank asking you for login details or personal information consider it fraud email, they will never send out such email's.

Absolutely. Despite the other precautions you can put in place, there is no substitute for judicious use of loaf.

Theres an Ebay tool bar that when loaded tells you when your not on a genuine ebay site.

It works well as we had a spate of these emails, got sick of reporting them to ebay.

Re: ebay

Yes the Ebay IE toolbar does work well.

However, I initially had a nightmare getting it to download. In the end, I found a link to a US site which said that I needed to enable BHO's - Browser Helper Objects in IE if I'm on Win XP SP2 (I *think* that's the term), and gave instructions on how to do this. Afterwards, the toolbar installed okay.
