Hackers jailed

3 Month, this is a joke:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4319942.stm

Re: Hackers jailed

Hmmm somehow i don't think 3 month will make them learn any lessons!!

Re: Hackers jailed

Well, it looks like they weren't exactly out to cause damage/profit from it...

Hmmmm somehow i don't buy that! The fact they created a virus is just malicous in it self, regardless of there intent!

That does not give them a right to compromise a personal PC does it?

No, it definitely doesn't. It's probably good they were jailed, but it does look like there was no real harmful intent behind it.

In honesty, I really don't know what sentence would be fitting for a crime like this, but I would imagine these two lads will think twice before trying this again.

In that respect, I don't think 3/6 months in jail (3 months for one, 6 months for the other) is a joke really.

Ramrod 07-10-2005 22:03

Re: Hackers jailed

They only infected 19 000 PC's..........

Gareth 07-10-2005 22:10

Re: Hackers jailed

That's small fry compared to some legal spyware applications. I think in this case the level of risk is more important than number of infections.

At least a fitting custodial sentence, and a restriction to access a PC for a set time IE 12 month.

Re: Hackers jailed

3month, and make them only able to use a Intel Celeron 333mhz with 64mb of ram and onboard visuals and sound, with a 2gb HD at 5400rpm IDe, single speed cd-rom, 1 floppy drive, and the most dodgy ever installation of Windows ME.

NOW THATS DETERENT

Actually, I think that would be far better than 3/6 months in jail.

I very much doubt it.Iread a few years ago that a one or two teenagers in the US using an old TRS-80 hacked into a US government sytem they also hacked into the phone company and erased all the phone call traces.

So any hacker can break into anything.

How long before somebody uses the new Sony PSP

Apart from ME, that's a better spec than my first PC, and that was only 7 or 8 years ago.

You forgot to mention the dodgy dialup - now, that's frustrating!

Erm, is that 'detergent' or 'deterrent?' ;-D

19.000 pcs in 2 weeks not 19,000 total?

if it wasnt for profit then I expect they were launching denial of service attacks with them, the term 3 months is very low but what do you expect its a virtual crime and many judges will be unaware of the affects this type of crime can have.

AndrewJ 08-10-2005 01:39

Re: Hackers jailed

Hmmm a better way to stop them trying to hack things... okay I have come to a conclusion, simply make sure that they are on a ntl bb connection at the lowest level, with a special cap of 1kb.

There they are online. But not much of a problem.

3 months ?

3 months is not enough atleast a year, they will proberbly be let out within a month or just over

They'll be out in 3 weeks.

Re: Hackers jailed

The next Hackers will just be more careful not to get caught!

I did like Saxo's idea but I would make it a 286 with no access to the net?

Re: Hackers jailed

I work with Andrew Harvey and he is a nice guy, wonder why he got 6 months huh?

What needs to be remembered is that they did not use the worm to do any damage, the work caused no damage, it simply opened a back door into a computer. They gained nothing financially and they took nothing from these computers.

Martin 08-10-2005 09:46

Re: Hackers jailed

So they didn't do any damage and they got no finacial gain! So why did they do it? They created a back door just for the sake of it? hmmmm I have to say it sounds dodgy to me!!

Jules 08-10-2005 09:48

Re: Hackers jailed

And while they are inside I am sure they will have access to a computer any way

Re: Hackers jailed

I think lots of community service, a large fine each and banned from using the internet for 2 years would have been a better sentence. Prison isn't going to do them good as I think they were stupid rather than hardened criminals. perhaps they could have been sentenced to community service educatating kids on computing.

I just been discussing this, you could argue that if these guys are guilty and deserve jail, then so are programmers that either by accident or negligence allow a back door to open should be jailed, and then where do we stop?

Gareth 08-10-2005 10:49

Re: Hackers jailed

At least after spending 3 months inside, they'll have learnt some new scams. Nothing like locking up a VX'er with a kiddie-fiddler or mass murderer to make them see the error of their ways.

Nidge 08-10-2005 13:05

Re: Hackers jailed

I'm going to get some flack over this but here goes, it's not a hardcore crime so why they have to go to prison is beyond me, when they get out some software company will sign them up and give them high paid jobs to tackle the problems of hackers.

patrickp 08-10-2005 13:24

Re: Hackers jailed

Agreed. Much better idea to teach them that their skills have positive as well as negative uses - community service would be much better.

Better they educated the older persons (silver surfers they call themselves locally). Children have access to computers from pre-school age!

Re: Hackers jailed

They done some kind of damage it just wasnt found out. If you had a trojan on your pc doing a denial of service attack all you would notice is probably your internet running a bit slowly.

If it wasnt found out how do you know?

The court admitted they did little, I'd imagine beyond infecting a machine nothing was done. Had they carried out a Denial of service I'd imagine the Yanks would have known after all it was them that traced these guys.

I think they were both incredibly stupid for what they have done, but I STRONGLY disagree with their Jail sentences.

Chrysalis 09-10-2005 00:41

Re: Hackers jailed

Reason for my conclusion is you dont infect thousands of machines for no reason, there are distrubuted denial of service war's going on all the time between packet kiddies (mainly on irc networks) and as it was concluded they wasnt doing it for commercial reasons I am assuming they were involved in DDOS attacks.

Or as I am sure, they wanted to see if it worked, if they could write a trojan, and simply logged onto several machines and did nothing.

Simply put its like owning a shotgun, you can use it, but you dont have to kill with it.

patrickp 09-10-2005 13:02

Re: Hackers jailed

And there are considerable bragging rights involved.

Chrysalis 09-10-2005 22:01

Re: Hackers jailed

Well having witnessed and help shut down various botnet's caused by similiar trojans I have never seen a botnet owner just have the bots for bragging rights, why take the risk just to say I done this?

patrickp 09-10-2005 22:47

Re: Hackers jailed

Well, it seems accepted by the authorities that they _didn't_ take advantage of of their activities, so why did they do it?
