Re: system crawling
Hi and :welcome: to cf
Yes i would defrag i would also run antispy and antivirus software, and see how it goes.:) |
Re: system crawling
Do this in this order, Disc clean up making sure restore points are cleaned. Run spyware removal software ie adaware spybot micro$oft blar blar ,then run AV
EDIT Missed this goto start run type msconfig look at start up and remove anything that does not need to start (ty Rob i forgot this lot) and finally a defrag. And also a :welcome: from me also enjoy your stay |
Re: system crawling
Worth checking what programs you have installed over the years. You may have a few iffy utilities, that seemed nice at the time, but which now just take up resources.

Re: system crawling
Have a look at O+O defrag, which is a lot better than the XP one. You can get a free one month trial which is fully functional.

Re: system crawling
Also throw some more ram at the machine another 512 will do nicely

Re: system crawling
Wy dont u run something like CCleaner, get rid of the trash and then run chkdsk and defragment. System restore points can take up space. Delete ur temp files, recycle bin files, etc and if u hve stuff u can burn them to CDs and make more room. If you add and delete files a lot ur drive must be badly fragged, which is why the slowdown.u better defrag regularly lese once the disk space gets full, u will hve fewer troubleshooting options left. Also as everyone said, spyware SCANS! also check out these links

Re: system crawling
I would have thought the system logs would be the first port of call, windows might be telling u exactly what the problem is.

Re: system crawling
Dunno, don't think it's actually error-ing, so nothing will be written in the Event viewer. Windows isn't able to self-diagnose when things are running slowly.
Unless I'm mistaken and there are error messages, in which case you're right and checking your system logs is indeed a good place to start. |
Re: system crawling
I've done what most of u suggested ran disk cleanup deleted loads of stuff from the system, yes also uninstalled unwanted programs and then ran the disk defragmenter......it ran for some hours and stopped.. i think it hung. Its taking a LONG time!!!!!Am really bugged!
Also please suggest a gud registry cleaner someone. I ran adaware and spybot and cleaned out a cuple of nasties, virus scans have come out clean. thnkx guys, plz solve the defrag issue too. |

Re: system crawling
also did u run chkdsk before that, hey since u have never defragmented its likely to take long, the other option would be as someone said use something like diskeeper which is a whole lot faster. Run the disk defragger in safe mode, if some program is running while it defrags, it may hang. gud luk

Re: system crawling
Sounds like your HD could be dying....

Re: system crawling
The bog-standard Windows defrag never liked my anti-virus running at the same time as the defrag... only discovered that one after having left the damn thing running overnight and realising it kept restarting itself every fe minutes
