Exactly. He bought his ticket fair and square and won like anyone else could have done.

I guess it was his lucky day! Good on him.

I like the fact that he will be sending money home to Kenya - think of the amount of good it would do there, compared to the USA. What a great guy. Fair play to him.

Re: Welcome to the USA

Fair play to him and good luck I say.

He spent 16 years working to become a US citizen, they deserve a leg up and it appears from the article they intend to use the money to good advantage to their family.

Wish more in this country had that sort of loyalty and values :erm:

I'm quite pleased that everyone is happy for this chappy.

I do wonder, however (which I think is why Salu posted it originally) if there would be as much positivity if the same family had just arrived in the UK.

Not that I wish to stir it up of course....

Erm read it properly
After being sworn in as an American citizen after waiting for 16 years, he popped in to a store to check a lottery ticket and discovered he had won.
16 yrs is a long time ;)

Yes I know he's been there 16 years, what I was hypothesising was if he had just arrived in the UK. As I said.

If they was legal and law abiding why would it matter?

But he hasn't 'just arrived' in the US either. As others have said, he's been there 16 years. We could hypothesize and say that the winner was a lesbian, single-parent, asylum seeker, paraplegic neo-nazi with bad breath... but it's just a hypothesis and isn't the case - in the same way that it isn't the case that the actual winner has 'just arrived in the US. Sorry, mate, I really don't see where you're coming from on this one.

Now, if you'd argued that he'd bought the ticket before becoming a US citizen, and whether he deserved to win a US lottery (not sure if anyone can deserve to win a lottery...?) when not being a US citizen but merely being a US resident then that would be a different matter.

I really wish certain people would refrain from inventing scenarios in an attempt to stir things up.

It doesn't matter...it was a hypothetical question to see how people would react then. Personally I wouldn't feel any different, but I bet that some people would be miffed - which is why i asked the question.

I don't understand your point. I presumed, by the wording, that I was asking the very question the OP was suggesting in his post. If there's a problem with it, feel free to remove it.

Thanks for your suggestion. I was asking a hypothetical question I feel your comments are rather more suited to a playground scrap than a sensible discussion, but that's just my opinion.

Forget I raised the point, forget the OP suggested the same thing (or at least I think he was suggesting it). The most telling thing about all the replies is that no-one has actually replied.

One thing I saw, which I don't think others did.... When he became naturalised, he already felt lucky/lridged. When he won the lottery, he became even more so.

Its something that gets overlooked a lot. Whilst hatred for America is at an alltime high, so are immigration applications, and not from terrorists either. There are many people out there who consider them privledged and lucky to be able to leave in the US.

Indeed. But a lot of immigrants to the US are from affulent, western countries (like within Europe). Imiigrants from the UK make up such a big part of their demographic, the UK is one of the very few countries exempt from joining the green card lottery.

well not everyone... but if your here with a skill such as being in the health profession and further this countrys lack of them then i dont think anyone should mind over anyone coming in to the UK, yes they take up the jobs quota interms of being doctors but if there is nobody to fill the boots here then what can you do.
