Yes but not major Welsh heads of state.

I certainly hope Blair gets taken to task over this but just like the Anne Robinson thing, it won't go anywhere.

The 'Anne Robinson thing'? Did I miss something? Can anyone fill me in on what Old Winky did??

I was back in Cardiff on the weekend and it felt absolutely great! If it wasn't for my job, I'd much rather live in Wales than England. The Welsh are so much nicer than the English.

I don't think its an insult really. Its stereotypical, and not really complimentary, but I don't think its perpetuating racial hatred? Most people in this country say f---ing Americans, or f---ing French, and noone cares. The language may be stronger, but has the same meaning as "damn Americans/French". They are trying to make an example out of him because he is the PM, but even though I have no love for him, I think he has the right to voice opinions that ordinary citizens are, especially in private.

I thought Welsh stereotypes were of playing rugby (exceptionally well ;) ), singing, eating leeks, being crap at football?

Not when he's responsible for the people he's insulting.

There'd be uproar if a Welsh prime minister called the English "the f***ing English".

It's not on - he's supposed to be the Prime Minister of the UK, not just of flaming England.

It's racial hatred - hope he gets made an example of.

There I have offended everyone., I cant possibly be racist, it was done equally. :D :D

Oh sorry I thought this was a thread to be racist in

We all do it, we all make fun and derogatory remarks at some point in our lives against another country. Whats the big deal?

The Irish, the scots, the welsh and the english all have derogatory comments made about them by each other.

And If as it is ALLEGED, he said it, what happened 5 years ago is hardly of any value now is it? Or is it just another case of crap to sell a damned book?

He's the PM, that's the big deal. He wouldn't get away with saying the "f***ing Pakis", "f***ing Indians" or "f***ing Japanese", so why should he get away with it with his own people?!

You just don't say these things with you're the PM.

It sounds like he said it in private (ie not a state occasion). Is he not entitled to express an opinion in private? It's similar in that way to being a mod on here. We are entitled to our own opinions which are seperate from our position.

I personally think it is a massive waste of police time investigating it. Before you say anything, I would think that if ANY minister had said anything like that about any race (including the English) in private.

Of course he's entitled to his opinion. But he may as well give up on that fake grin the next time he comes to Wales. He's lost a LOT of support here.

Well, TBH, I am not worried what Blair says in private. The reason I said the Police should not be wasting their time is that, when all is said and done, Blair used harsh and inappropriate language. It's not as if he committed a serious crime, such as killing someone.

The welsh are nice ? hmmm well whatever takes your fancy, one of the welsh's favourite tricks to visitors is to loosen all the wheel nuts on at least one wheel, they almost killed me and my bro who I was visiting at the time, as he had moved there to live. Fortunatley I noticed something was not right with the car at 70mph on a dual carraige way in wales, stopped and checked and discovered the very nasty welsh administered death trick. At a guess the wheel had 5-10 minutes left on the car max, then me and my bro could well have been cart wheeling and rolling down that dual carraige way in a non standard fashion trying to catch up with the wheel that would have been careering and bouncing all over the road, which could actually have hit another vehicle and cause a lot more damge, maybe even to the prats family as it wasnt that far from where it had been done.

Perhaps this is one of the rare moments Mr Blair may have got something right.

Whether or not he broke the law (and I'm not saying he he did or didn't) is irrelevant - a crime is a crime.

All I ask for is equality - I'm not bothered about what some ignoramous thinks about me based purely on my nationality - the point is if someone would be reported for saying "f***ing pakis" then they should also be treated the same if they say "f***ing Welsh".

I have never done that, none of my family or friends have ever done that, so please, enough of the generalisations.

I lived in Oxford for 6 months a few years back. When I walked in to a pub one day and ordered a drink, some guy next to me went "baaaaaa" - should I assume all Saesneg are like that? NO!

NitroNutter 28-09-2005 21:58

Re: f****** Welsh

Its not a generalisation, the bloke at the scrapyard my bro had a part time job at, volunteered the info, stating its a regular welsh trick played on foreigners and is very nasty.

You may never have done it, neither may anyone you personally know, but the scrapyard owner was welsh thru and thru and a copper who was at the counter at the time also confirmed it.

Its one thing to utter words, its totally another thing to atempt murder, and on a regular basis.

As someone who has lived here for close to 30 years, I can tell you that's the first time I've ever heard of that happening to people because they're "foreignors" (your wording) to Wales. I can also assure you that "the bloke at the scrapyard" is talking out of his rusty bullet hole.

.

Therefore it's not something we do as a nation. Kind of makes your "one of the welsh's favourite tricks " comment redundant. Had you said "This is a trick played by some irresponsible people against the English which is not indicative of their countrymen" then you'd probably be closer to making sense.

The Welsh and the English are as bad as each other when it comes to racial stereotypes and general racist attitudes towards each other as far as I am concerned.

Ach there's people going out of their way to get offended again.

In March 2002 David Trimble, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party called Ireland a "pathetic sectarian state". Never mind the irony in that but I think he was asked if he would apologise and he flatly refused. Point is you can get away with murder in Ireland ;-)

It's a good point. I think the nature of nationalism is different in Wales than elsewhere in the UK. The union of England and Scotland was a marriage of equals, and although England has come to dominate, Scotland still has a proud and confident political identity. When the Scots have a go at the English, they don't feel they are doing so from a sense of inferiority. When the English have a go at the Scots, there is similarly an underlying respect.

On the other hand, the Act of Union by which England effectively annexed Wales was one of the low points of centuries of military and political subjugation. There is no serious political identity in Wales (And don't anyone try to invoke Plaid Cymru, which is an utter joke), and the rich cultural identity the Welsh have is jealously (perhaps paranoidally) guarded. Welsh nationalism has a nasty side to it that Scottish nationalism does not. I and my friends have had 'tumbleweed moments' in rural Welsh pubs in which the regulars switched to speaking Welsh only after it became apparent the newcomers at the bar were English. Notwithstanding the fact that Gaelic is not so widespread in Scotland, you just don't get the same deliberate back-turning here.

That is not to say that there are no ignorant nationalists in Scotland, and I am certainly not painting all, or even most, or even many, Welsh people as ignorant, paranoid English haters. But I do not find it surprising that for the second time in recent months, a Welsh police force is investigating complaints of slurs against the Welsh people, whereas when similar things happen towards Scotland or England, everyone just gets on with life.

But how many of the English or Scottish are just as bad? When I worked in Consumer Services, I'd say that there was a fairly even spread when it came to being obnoxious.

Having said that, if you go into a conversation / business thinking 'you arrogant taff', I'm not surprised they're rude - if that's what you're thinking, it'll normally come out in the way that you talk to them.

I agree all nationalies are jsut as bad. However, when I talk to the scottish i find them nothing but a joy to talk to. and fyi I don't go into the conversation thinking "you arrogant taff". My superiorsin all my jobs involving telesales/customer services have found my phone manner to be impecible. So to say that they're merely talking to me in that way due to my attitude on them is unfounded :)

I didn't say that it was due to your attitude - I said that this sort of thing can come through in the way you deal with people (and even be something that you are unaware of) :)

Obviously, I don't know what line of work you're in, but I find it hard to believe that, using your example, 90% of the Welsh are 'rude and arrogant'. If, for example, you work cold-calling, then maybe that puts the averages up because no-one likes being cold-called. However, to just state that, what? 2½ million people (using your statistic) are rude is pretty over the top.

Just my opinion, of course :)

I'm and Englishwoman married to a half Welshman.I've been involved with that country for 30 odd years of my life..The idea that the Welsh police are looking to see if they should prosecute in this case doesn't reflect what I know of the Welsh. They just rise above such remarks because they are a gracious people.

I love the Welsh myself-it was the only reason I married my husband because of the way in which his community welcomed me with open arms. They are nothing like the stuffy, money grasping, unfriendly southern English I live among. ;)

It's actually taking calls from them, not customers either, this is an internal line - so no talking to customers :) . my example isn't trying to portray 90% of the welsh as rude and arrogant, just the ones I talk to ;)

Just making the point that stereotyping is not just confined to different countries but within certain areas too.

Like down here in the 'sarf' the Pompiens(Portsmouth) hardly ever have a good word to say about Scummers(Southampton). ;)
