Any news on UKTV Style Gardens launching on NTL ?

Last I heard was that it would be coming to NTL sometime this autumn

Re: new channels???

Apparently there is a shopping channel launching as well on ntl that is, anyone know which one?

Also, I didnt know but I read on www.quiztelly.com that a new quiz channel is launching on ntl on tuesday, the one from channel 4 :Yikes:

jonifen 28-08-2005 16:07

Re: new channels???

I can't understand why NTL would allow more shopping channels to exist - they could do so much more with the available bandwidth that these channels chew up!

However, I realise its a case of the channel that coughs up the most cash for a space get in, so I suppose I'll just fling it down the bottom of the favourites list along with all the channels we don't get :)

Motors TV looks good though from what I've seen on Sky and I think Horror channel will go down well in our house :)

Re: new channels???

Over on Digital spy , a number of hidden channels have been found.

Also CS said that around 12 new channels would be launching in september (2 of which are adult PPV)...some off my head were

E!.
VH2.
Shopping channels.
UKTV Gardens.
2 UKTV + 1's.
Horror Channel
Motors TV
Community Channel (Langley)
Quiz Call TV, is also another channel rumored

No Wrestling channel mentioned, and the hidden channel numbers are:

165
170
171
172
173
174
175
177
615

hutchy 28-08-2005 22:00

Re: new channels???

I'm happy about VH2, shame TWC isnt there considering it gets more viewers on sky than E! does

Rillington 28-08-2005 22:05

Re: new channels???

Those channels are not a surprise. VH2 and Motors appeal to the hetero lads, E, the shopping channels and Style Gardens appeals to the women and the Horror Channel whilst men orientated appealsd to both.

Nothing for the gays then? Na didn't think there would be.

jtwn 28-08-2005 22:32

Re: new channels???

*sigh* Don't bring that old chestnut up again. It makes sense to market towards the majority, not the niche. I think the channel selection is ok; its not like I can think of any other I want desperately so its good they are not just all shopping channels.

so what kind of tv do "the gays" watch then?

I know plenty of gay people, some who are into Heavy Metal, some who are into Westlife. Some who will watch motor sports, some who would watch Interior design shows.

I don't think someone's sexuality really has much to do with what kind of TV they watch.

ntlrocks 29-08-2005 00:38

Re: new channels???

there are two PPC Adult channels coming, perhaps gay ones?....though i very much doubt it.

To describe a gay mans taste in television would be impossible, all guys - i'm sure - have different tastes so in affect, a gay channel might only appeal to a very small number of people.

Safeman 29-08-2005 07:57

you got that right rocks m8 lol i think it would be great if they a mix for all not just a few xxx channels they should start doing it like sky they have so many on there service would be nice to see doh

Re: new channels???

Faze TV and Gaydar Radio are the ones which come to mind. Gaydate TV maybe, especially as the heterosexual version of this channel has been carried by ntl for three eyars, but not the gay version - The Dating Channel and Gaydate TV are owned by the same company.

Yes, Faze TV is a channel I would like to watch and Gaydar is a station I would like to listen to but ntl are clearly not going to allow me access to either channels. Can't say I'm surprised.

Good news article Simon, gotta love Ntl's blurb on this though:

Quote:

Q: Will Quiz Call broadcast the call charges?
A: Yes, below the telephone number is a line clearly stating that calls cost 60p from BT landlines, the presenters will also be clearly communicating this to the viewers and have received training on this.
Surely they could have included what the cost would be from an Ntl line!

No. Directly attacking my sexual orintation is not "tough" - 'get used to it.' It ain't gonna happen and I ain't gonna let you. If you don't want "homo stuff on your TV" then dopn't tune into that channel.

Back on topic. Yes, EuroNews was unexpected and, for me, welcome it is too. I always liked the difference when I occasionally viewed it during the days of analogue cable.

To be honest, I can only see VH2, Motors TV and the Horror Channel being watched in our house. I'll probably file the others down the bottom end of the favourites listing to keep them out the way along with the radio stations and other channels we don't watch :)

Right lets get this sorted once and for all.

Rillington - As much as I respect Gary's point of view, that in no way means that I agree with his point of view. My personal opinion is that Gary is a small minded homophobic, amongst other things.

Gary - One more attack on the Gay members of this site WILL result in an immediate suspension.

I hope I have made myself abundantly clear on this. Now back on topic.

Rillington 01-09-2005 11:29

Re: new channels???

OK Simon, I guess I misinterpreted your comment. I assumed respect as agreeing/sympathising in this case. I therefore apologise to you.

In summary, the only channel of interest to me will be EuroNews. Have to say it's a shame they haven't added any new radio stations and it has always surprised me that Capital Life has never ended up on digital TV - it isn't even on Sky.

It does, yes, but unfortunately this will not happen for a while, and ut's highly unlikely they will adopt sky's numbering system.

Rillington 01-09-2005 12:50

I don't think that will ever happen. However, I am surprised that ntl ahs not given its channels the same on both platforms.

Re: new channels???

why do langly and bromley have different numbers?

jonifen 01-09-2005 13:02

Re: new channels???

Adopting Sky's numbering system would be a nice plus to attracting customers from Sky to NTL. However, it would only take Sky to renumber their channels to put it all out again. I think putting them into groups of numbers would be good which I think was the original plan (I could be wrong)... just the mistake they made was the groups weren't big enough.
1-100 : normal entertainment channels like BBC, ITV and the variants (ITV2, BBC3 etc) and other similar channels.
101-200 : Childrens channels
201-300 : Music
301-400 : Movies
401-500 : Sports
501-600 : News
601-700 : Foreign channels
701-800 : any channels that do not fall into the categories above
801-900 : Radio channels
901-999 : "premium" type channels etc.
or something like that.

From your location - Nottinghamshire, you would probably be covered by the Nottingham area which has its feed from the Langley platform. AFAIK customers receiving Langley have SACM. It is Bromley platform which uses the cable modem in the STB for broadband.

(as mentioned earlier in the thread), both platforms will have the same channel numbers. NTL is in the process of standardising its Digital TV on the Bromley platform.

I believe the Bromley platform is more technically advanced than the Langley platform.

Tristan 01-09-2005 18:07

Re: new channels???

One True Numbering System for all digital platforms would undoubtedly be a good thing.

While I'm waiting for this to happen though, I'd settle for NTL adopting the same (usually very good*) numbering system as Telewest -- it would make sense to have one "digital cable" scheme, and would make the merger easier...

* Telewest last week decided to move Living TV, Living +1 and Living 2 to channels 110, 111 and 112 -- ahead of ITV2, ITV3 and Sky One. Whilst I can see why Telewest would be promoting the Flextech channels, it isn't half annoying when you're trying to flick....

Just for the record, customers in Bromley TV areas have been able to have SACMs for a good couple of years now. However, as yet, Langley customers cannot use 4010s or Samsungs for broadband.

It was actually the Cable & Wireless Consumer Corporation, which is why you still hear some NTL old-timers referring to it as "CoCo".

I would be very surprised to see renumbering before the end of the year, despite what NTL said in April. They've got to roll out 3.2 to every Bromley region first, and that has to be done pretty slowly, as it's likely to impact callcentres quite heavily. Then they'll have to mailshot every Bromley customer with a big "YOUR CHANNEL NUMBERS ARE CHANGING" leaflet, because changing the numbers can't be done by region like software downloads. Then they'll have to do the actual change, which is a very simple job, but will call callcentre meltdown the next day. And they've got to do this all before the end of November, because they freeze everything in December to minimise the risk of things going wrong over the peak Christmas period.

Of course, there's nothing to stop them re-jiggiing the Langley numbers over the next couple of months, but I would have thought they'd want to do the two platforms at roughly the same time, and in any case they've got VOD rollouts to be getting on with...

There was a time when this was true, but that was long ago. The last update to the Bromley platform was in June 2003; this release enabled "red button" ETV, but was/is painfully slow, and has some shocking bugs (such as the infamous "crackly sound" one) that should not have been allowed out of Beta test, let alone been used by hundreds of thousands of customers every day for over two years.

In the mean time, there have been two major software releases for Langley, and another couple of minor fix releases for Samsung boxes. VOD is being rolled out to a great many Langley regions, but not one single Bromley one to date, and with no prospect of it in the near future -- according to a poster on DS, the new 3.2 code used in York isn't VOD-ready.

Still, it's not all doom and gloom. At least Bromley is at last getting some attention, and hopefully by the end of the year our software will be on a par with our Langley cousins. Telewest have got VOD working (mostly) on their Pace boxes, so the code exists -- it's just a matter of NTL integrating it into their existing software.

Sorry that my 1001st post has ended up being a bit of a rant. It's just frustrating as a Bromley customer to see "the other half" always getting the attention. First the NTLWorld dial-up fiasco (free 24/7 to Langley customers, not available to those on Bromley); then the Bromley broadband fiaso (rolled out painfully slowly, a long time after it was available in every Langley region, and initially only through an STB); even today there's the issue of caller display (NTL last year made it available across the entire Celtic business area, and thus to all Langley customers -- but only about 50% of Bromley customers can get this most basic of phone features, with no prospect of this ever changing); then there's the fact that Bromley has been stuck with awful slow, pink, unstable, pink, buggy, pink, crackly, pink software for two-and-a-half years, whist Langley users have enjoyed updates and VOD galore.

I guess it's possible -- and perhaps understandable -- that there might be an institutional bias within NTL towards Langley. It was, after all, their "own" platform, before they were forced to start dealing with CWC's systems after the takeover. It's natural that the engineers would want to try out new features first on the platform they were most familiar with. It's just surprising -- and disappointing -- that this has persisted for so long, and will continue to do so into 2006.

I've got both a samsung box and a seperate cable modem. When I last had an engineer round he "eyed" the modem. but never took it away which I'm glad about. I've been having lots of problems with the tv service recently as said on other threads, picture blanking, stuttering etc. If ntl come around again and decide to remove my modem as I've got a samsung stb, will I be able to get the 10mb through the samsung?

PS: Just noticed that on the samsung, the ipeg version is 1.6.20. Has this changed as I thought it was 1.4 something the other day...?

PSS: Looking at the Telewest channel numbering sheme, it doesn't seem much better than us Bromely people. Wish this upgrade/channel renumumbering would hurry up, taking far too long...

The Samsung box is different from the Pace models, because the CM is completely separate from the TV bit. It's effectively a stand-alone cable modem taht happens to be built into the STB. What I mean is that yes, a Samsung could handle 10meg just as well as any other cable modem.

No idea about iEPG version numbers, but I'm 99% sure it won't have changed unless you've got the new Bromley 3.2 software -- and you'd definitly notice that!

Take it from me, the Telewest numbering system is 110% better. I've used both extensively. Three-digit channel numbers are A Good Thing. Channels arranged in groups by genre is A Good Thing. Having Living TV so far up the line-up is not -- but at least with the NTL favourites system you'd be able to change that.

Re: new channels???

Tristan - thanks for info about Samsung coping with the 10meg service. I don't have the Bromley update yet, I would indeed notice if it had been changed:)

I agree with your comments regarding the slowless of updates on the former Cable & Wireless platform aka "Bromley." Its completely unacceptable that we as paying customers have to put up with slow, buggy software while other customers on the "other" platfrom get the upgrades. I won't even go into the comments regarding the ntlworld fiasco - we'll be here all night if I start on that on that one.

Re channel remumbering, as I've said before here, I want to organise the channels how I want to organise them. Not like Sky's or ntl's, but by my preference. I want what channel I want in the position I want and on what channel number I want. ie Hallmark in position 6, and on channel 6. Why is it so difficult for ntl to allow this? It is meant to be an "i"epg they're using. Although its been rumored that the Liberate software is about to be ditched in favour of the Opentv software as used by Sky. So things might change then.

And as for new channels, sod Euronews. I want Foxnews back as I had on Sky. Missing those cuddly redneck presenters and "impartial fair and balanced" reporting:)

Re: new channels???

And I still think that channel should keep their own numbers, but be rearrange-able, as they are now -- but we'll agree to disagree.

I've not heard any rumours of NTL going to OpenTV -- where did you hear it? I'd be astonished if it were true -- why would NTL go to the trouble of getting VOD to play well with Liberate if this were the case? It seems even more unlikely now, as SeaChange, the company supplying NTL and Telewest with VOD equipment, has recently bought out the company that produces the Liberate software.

Re: new channels???

I can't find the main article I read but its to do with ntl/telewest execs being unhappy with liberate and also politics and power struggles. Here's one link, but it doesn't say much:

I'm already a phone customer..... bummer. Might still give it a go though :)

Re: new channels???

OK, this is the short version.

I called sky tech help & told them about the problems I was having, they said that being as the system was over 12 months old & not insured it would cost me £65 for an engineers visit plus whatever the cost of fixing it would be. I said thanks anyway, but could I have the phone number for cancelling my subscription, which I was given.

Then phoned ntl to see what they would offer. Couldn't have the free sky sports offer, but was offered the ntl family pack at half price for the first 6 months of a 12 month contract. Accepted this with the understanding I'd be able to cancel before the install date.

Then phoned sky to cancel, was asked why I wanted to cancel and was offered a free engineers visit & free repair/replacement to whatever needed it and all with a 3 month waranty, still retaining the right to cancel my sub after they've repaired it!

So, get sky stuff fixed for free, cancel sky sub, get ntl family pack at half price.

They were here as well. I had lost a few other channels and the channel order was changed though, so I rebooted the STB and they had disappeared.

Unfortunately I can't confirm a date that the new channels are coming. We are continuing to work on resolving all of the issues around them. We were hoping to launch them this week, but unfortunately I think that is unlikely now. As soon as we have a new date, we'll make sure the article on the homepage is updated to reflect it.

Cheers
Sam

I live in Beckenham, South London and today after my box froze, I rebooted and there were all the new channels. It is now 9.55pm and they are still there. Strange that other people don't seem to have them.

I have a Samsung box and I am on the Bromley platform, all the new channels have been added to the bottom of the favourites list

Thank you for the update Sam.

I guess it will be the end of the month now.

What are the reasons for the delay?

thanks sam for letting us know, i find it sad that NTL cannot give a statement themseves and we have to rely on the good nature of one of there employes.

as i have said before i dont think this is really good enough and someone has messed up royal but i apreciate all the hard work you are all doing trying to get it working

Re: new channels???

The reason why NTL never officially announce channel launches until after they happen has been expressed on many ocassions.

You have to remember that being part of this forum puts us in a priviledged position because we get to know alot more than the average NTL customer. NTL haven't officially announced a dealy to its customers because it never officially announced the new channels to ALL of its customers.

No one has messed up at all. NTL have not commited to providing you with the new channels yet. What they have commited to is providing you with your existing channels. Adding new channels should not put your exisiting service at risk and hence the reason that you dont yet have the new channels yet as they are not confident that it wont degrade your existing service.

Nemesis 14-09-2005 09:27

Re: new channels???

Lets get this straight.

We have forged a good relationship with ntl over the last 6 months+. As part of this we have negotiated the release of information that is ahead of time, so that we can bring you the latest news before it goes public.

With this situation ntl gave us the release of the new channels ahead of time. The public would not have got this news until the day of the release of the new channels.

As it happened there obviously were issues with the new channel, and quite rightly, ntl postponed the release until they were sure they were stable. We have been kept informed, and will continue to be.

We could always revert to how it was and only inform you after the event .....

I use this site for all ntl information and I think all of us should welcome the good relationship this site has with ntl and long may it continue.

Re: new channels???

I don't get how some people can't understand others getting cheesed off with yet another NTL delay. Don't tell someone that they're gonna get something at a certain date and be arsey when they complain that it hasn't happened.

If you don't want people upset over delays don't tell them specific dates.

a) xtra channels coming this monday deffinately.

b) ntl are planning to add more channels this week subject to testing.

one of these doesn't build your hopes up so much but both say pretty much the same thing. Anyway I'd best shut up as we don't need more dummies on the floor.

surely someone has a list somewhere that gets regular updates as to what's going on with the cable tv side of operations ie

September
12th - Rollout of 3.2 software in Warrington
13th - Rollut of 3.2 software in Wallasey
30th - x new channels to be launched

October
01st - Rollout of VOD software in Bagshot
01st - Rollout of VOD software in Farnborough

November
12th - 3MB BB Upgrade to 10MB on Bromley

Yeah i know that I just made that up but there must be a list somewhere within NTL and if it's kept up to date then there wouldn't be a big deal with these kind of things and 70% of posts wouldn't need to be made. A 12 month rolling calendar of events maybe?

huxleypiguk 15-09-2005 07:55

Re: new channels???

I'm sure that such a list exists, but I think that the phrase "Commercial in Confidence" will be stamped all over it !

I do agree that managing of expectation is important.
