Segregation in the UK?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4269988.stm

I saw this on the Times website at the weekend, and still can't decide what to think about it.

Is Trevor Phillips trying to be controversial? Or is he actually pointing out the facts that others are afraid to admit to? Maybe both, but he seems to make a few good points, IMO. Not sure that I agree with all of his solutions though.

Don't forget he has to keep coming out with something, to justify his position & salary. Rarely does he ever come out with anything earth-shattering.

I can't see what he is getting at. Ghettos? we've always had communities that are deprived areas and drawn along racial and religious lines. We've had those as long as we've had minorities.

Definitely don't agree with the solutions. Force people to intergrate? You can't force people to do anything. Force private schools to take on minorities? At my private school there were still plenty of minorities, and this was years ago, I wouldn't have though their numbers would have shrunk. I am definitely against quotas.

Races do tend to integrate pretty well now. Its religion that's the problem, or rather one in particular. Muslims aren't following the rest of the pack with regards to integration, and having such an insular community mentality is very damaging. There was another survey in the paper: 10% wouldn't inform the police if they knew a terrorist attack was going to happen. Quote: "wouldn't grass on a Muslim". 10% = 150,000 people. A further 15%, 225,000 people either wouldn't comment, or wouldn't condemn the actions. So that's the same thing basically. 375,000 muslims in this country would like to see terrorist outrages in this country. Brilliant.

Isn't Trevor Phillips the Head of the Commission for causing racial disharmony????

Hang on a sec. Isn't this the same guy who said a few months ago the black boys should be taught separately from girls and white boys?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4323979.stm

So he is for segregation when it suits him and against it other times. Like Punky says I think he has to keep coming out with headline grabbing statements every so often to justify his £95,000 a year salary.

Got it in one!

How can you force a school to accept more ethinic minority students without it being a quota, let alone positive descrimination? Either you force them, which isn't right, or bribe them which isn't right either.

You shouldn't have to force or bribe schools to accept ethnic minority students.

Totally agree with you. This comment also makes sense:

Liberal Democrat MP Dr Evan Harris said it was "sheer lunacy" that the government was establishing more faith schools, which would segregate children on the grounds of religion and "effectively therefore their race".

My own school had people from many different faiths, and it was not an issue. Why should there be single faith schools?

You would have to bus the children over 12 miles each way to have a racially proportionate number of school pupils locally.

Exactly, private schools are funded by private money and should be able to let in whoever they damn well like. And like I said, I went to a private school, and there were many ethnic minority students. I don't know numbers, but looking back at class photos, approaching half if not half were from an ethnic minority.

These are two articles from the Sunday Times website. They make interesting reading, and give a lot more info the the BBC link from the OP.

I probably could comment here, but given what's happened in past threads, I don't think it's going to be worth getting involved :(

I really don't have any time for Trevor Phillips. To be honest, it seems that he seems to just spout something every so often just for the hell of it. And much of the time, he seems to be making a bigg issue out of not very much.

So often it seems that those that kick up the loudest fuss about racial issues do their cause more harm than good.

The segragation is created by the ethnic moniorites, they want their own little world, they want their own schools they want their own towns, they have created it not us.

It sometimes seems (to me) that the biggest stumbling block on the path to Racial Equality in this country is the Commission for Racial Equality.

Re: Segregation in the UK?

I couldn't work out what Trevor Phillips is trying to say. Have seen different write ups of his report on various News Sites which were all slightly different but were mostly the same stating he says white schools should be made to take in more pupils from ethnic backgrounds, and I started to think it was timed to coincide with the meeting the government had the other day with leaders and business people about how to sort this extremism out amongst the british muslims, then I spotted this:-

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...0&in_a_source=

A section that stands out is this:-

His most powerful warnings were directed at the education system, in which Muslims are particularly anxious to establish more Islamic faith schools.
-----------------------------------
If you read down the report, it has really upset the MCB.

When you think about it, he is right, a faith schools do breed segregation and prevent proper integration, but can you see an english christian being allowed into a muslim faith school, I don't think so.

A couple more interesting links from Yesterday's Sunday Times:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...796280,00.html

This one highlights some of the issues involved with arranged marriages.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspap...796407,00.html

This one focuse on Cat Stevens and his proposed new album. The article seems to imply that his Islamic views are softening a little. However, the quote from one Muslim leader is initially quite amusing; but when it sinks in, you can see what a hardline approach this man has. It made me wonder if that is typical or atypical of Muslim thinking?

Quote:

Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, chairman of the Muslim Council of Britainââ‚à ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s mosque and community affairs committee, conceded some scholars would admire Islam for reaching out to the wider world with his message of peace but said: †œMy personal view is the only music that should be permitted is the voice and the drum. I do not believe the electric guitar is acceptable for Muslims. Contemporary music has many associations with dance, nudity and taking drugs, which is not allowed.ââ‚à ƒ‚¬Ã‚
