Who's affected by the NTL proxy issue with some websites not loading?

Hey all,

Can you tell me if you are experiencing issues with your cache servers on accessing some websites.

Im having issues visiting steampowered.com for starters, there seems to be serious issues with some of these proxies / cache servers that needs resolving asap, Im going to ring NTL CSD tonight but I'd like to know if anyone else has been experiencing issues not only with steampowered.com but other websites too, if so please vote in the poll

Thanks,

Just tried steampowered, 8.30am Wednesday, no probs here, what others are not giving you access?

Everyone will at some point probably experience this.

Re: Who's affected by the NTL proxy issue with some websites not loading?

Steampowered still doesn't work here, I think though that it is a separate issue to the normal proxy issues as its been confirmed that it is Valve blocking the proxies, and not a fault - of course if we weren't forced to go through proxies then this wouldn't be an issue for us..

Currently Valve seems to be blocking:

Poplar,Colchester,Hersham & Swansea Proxies & probably others too.
Currently Baguley is working.

Almost a week now...

I`m having problems with some websites, I have to click the "Go" button 2-3 times sometimes to get the website working. It`s been over the past 2 weeks.

Re: Who's affected by the NTL proxy issue with some websites not loading?

Generally I have little problems with static content such as bbc and ntlworld.

Sites such as this site and any forums tend to fail every now and then under normal conditions and require a proxy cycle, on a bad day I have to repeatedly hit go, on rare occasions I can browse using automatic proxy for my area without having to cycle.

Specific problems which are not due to random failures are dnsreport.com who ban the proxies every now and then because of their flood protection and easynews. Also the dslreports.com tweak tester tests the proxy and not myself which is fairly annoying.

So my conclusion is that the proxies tend to fail more when its a negative cache hit, and if its a cacheable site they work fairly well. Its unfortunate many site's dont utilise x-forwaded-for for flood protection but thats down to the developer's for the software (apache etc.) rather then the webmaster's themselves.

Re: Who's affected by the NTL proxy issue with some websites not loading?

I also cannot access www.steampowered.com (also www.shacknews.com) . Phoned NTL tech support just now (straight through no wait !) - they tried programming to different proxies into my internet explorer settings - no hoy. They then tried at there end accessing www.steampowered.com and they said it worked but they did receive a popup panel as well (saying page not displayed).

Don't know id it is connected but my hotmail account has just gone tits-up "Error - Internal error - try later)

Most normal web sites e.g. bbc working OK

Lost without steampowered and game news but steam itself working OK

Yup, cosh-cache-4.server.ntli.net works fine.

Phoned up NTL again. After about 20 minutes of being treated like a Moron - Oh there is some maintenance on the cable stream your modem is on. I said that it has been like it for 2 days (which it has) same reply she said - maintenance on channel ? - fop off me thinks

I haven't had to change my proxy settings for a very very long time, don't remember the last time I had a problem getting to a site that still was unreachable via another ISP.

And steampowered.com worked for me at the weekend.

I experience it every so often, mainly with yahoo profile pages.

but then again, I just change proxies.

so none of the above poll options fit.

Wrong, if we had no proxies then Valve blocking bad users (which is presumably why they have blocked the ip ranges) would not affect everyone, only a small subnet of dial up addresses, whereas it seems they have blocked thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of users.

Shacknews.com is also broken here, yet another popular site.

I guess a post needs to be made on the forums there, but I'll have to use a proxy to get to that website now :S

In my case setting my IE proxy to cosh-cache-4.server.ntli.net works fine.

Why is it happening on a few websites though, if its meant to be down to Valve? bit strange if you ask me :(

I don't think it is Valve as other web sites that were not working also work now e..g slacknews

Only steampowered.com is down to Valve, the others are either faulty proxies or sites banning users, and accidentally banning entire sections of the country from their site because of the proxies, here in Poplar land I often get MSN Groups and Yahoo giving me blank pages, many times I go to a new site and it comes in blank so I think its down, but then using another proxy brings it in - they are pretty awful here :(

If you live where you have good proxies, then you have a good service and don't see all these problems, be thankful !

Yes, I am experiencing issues accessing certain websites (please post in the thread with detail!)

select that if you have to change proxy, basically you have an issue which forces you to use a workaround.

If you're on ntl then you are using proxies, just automatically not manually.

Of course it's not wrong, you can't deny facts just because they don't suit your agenda. If Valve didn't block them then there wouldn't be a problem - fact. ntl proxies pass on the original client ip for purposes such as this. If we can extract and use it (which we do) then so can they.

can you list me what proxies have been affected.

Thanks!

I thought we had established that Valve were blocking the ntl proxies from accessing their network?

Sorry how do you come to that . I am now confused  . I was under the impression that Valve are blocking some of the ntl proxies.

Even when they could do this.

Yes it is wrong, especially in the light of todays announcement on steampowered.com - answering the now 3 page long thread of NTL users that cannot access the site - Valve were asked and have confirmed that they are NOT blocking NTL users.

Its the proxies .......again.

Shacknews.com is also still dead on Poplar proxies
Betanews is partyl fixed it seems, it comes in but then choosing a file or story causes the next page to hang because it seems the proxy cannot handle the ad server and hangs the page - richards-realm, an adult site, has a submit script that does not work with Poplar proxies - it just hangs, I could go on (and frequently do !)

[/QUOTE]

Of no interest or use to me, I'm an end user, I don't want to have to rely on what individual web masters may or may not do to enable me to see the site, NTL proxies are the ONLY ones I'm aware of that have this problem with so many sites, other ISP users do not have to rely on this to see sites - AOL use proxies, and so far in over 3 years of using them I have yet to find a site that doesn't work at full speed using them.

There are so many proxy threads on this site alone, you even have a dedicated section, they don't work properly.

I just tried kodak.com as mentioned above - and sure enough the site comes in, but when requesting the support/drivers page it hangs (works fine on AOL)
Another one to add to the list..

heh they not sorted, someone probably grabbed a few url's of this forum that were repeatedbly mentioned and fixed it specifically for them. Their are new problems that surface daily, and maybe in a few weeks the specific problems that were fixed might resurface again.

I have a daily problem getting Intel.com, have to switch proxies to get there.
This is with the swansea proxies, nthell says i'm on cache 5, i usually switch to cache 7 to solve problem.
This has been occurring every day for some months now.
Also get intermittent connection problems with thisissouthwales.com, adobe.co.uk, www.digitv-forum.co.uk. all solved by switching proxies.

You're on cache 5 for ntlhell, the proxy you go through depends on the individual site due to load balancing.

http://www.kodak.com/

Downloads is still "freezing".

I know about switching proxies and how to. Proxomitron can do it for all your local browsers in Windoze. Set browser HTTP proxy to localhost:8080 (default) after installing proxomitron. Set up ntl proxies in prox and use that to select proxy.

Thing is it's not something I want to do or should need to.

Chrysalis 26-09-2005 10:55

Re: Who's affected by the NTL proxy issue with some websites not loading?

Yeah it freezes on nott 1.

I use proximitron so if I need to cycle I just enable proxy in browser which is set to proximitron and can cycle with that easily.
