Excellent news.

I saw man walk on the moon in 1968, (I was 6 months old at the time).

SIR_DRINKS_ALOT - man has been on the moon since 1940's type "german moonbase" in google

If you had the world where the space program didn't excist the world would be worse off.

The space program has lead to a lot of things:

medicine (Growing mehods in druds)
Satelites (weather sats help predice weather, sat TV, internet, commumications)
and others that I can't thing off at the moment.

Sorry have to disagree. If they are spending mega bucks on this they will hopefully not spend as much on weapons of war.

It does seem a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere. BUT it is increasing our knowledge of space so it's not all bad.

True and the sad fact is we are not spending nearly enough.

The moon is severely undervalued if we think this is a waste of money - The moon has been said to help the stability of the Earth and keep it on its axis - without it the Earth wouldn't be able to sustain life as we know now and would spin around in all sorts of directions and I bet Nasa are also eager to look at what the other side of the moon is hiding seeing as they haven't seen it for quite some time now. :)

Why is it a waste of time be nice to acheive something other then new bombs war and doom on the telly to see us acheive this would be a great feat.

I personally am all for it :tu: what would you prefer sending more aid to countries but then pickout who and what you give who?

This is something for all countries to enjoy get the plasma's up in New Orleans and name the mission after them I say.

They have been conducting tests with plants so taking some up there and seeing if they could build a kind of dome with oxygen in would be a good thing to try out.

That could be exactly what is needed to help this world, something to acheive something for entire countries to celebrate as we take bigger and bigger steps into space and explore new things.

You get a elevator crowded people fight and bicker after a while, that elevator is called Earth and is massivly overpopulated under-resourced and slowly decending into chaos as its natural system is destroyed. It is about time we looked to the stars as a goal to better ourselves not just end up rich fat *******s of a greedy race which was to self interested to actually make something of ourselves.

Some just like to complain about anything the yanks do. I have no problem with this return to the moon. I can see us benefiting from it. We have been trying to sort problems out on this planet for years and years. We will never do it in my life time. This however we will see completed in my life time so lets rock and roll and head back to the moon.

Should world piece break out tomorrow and we all end up getting along then of course i will withdraw my last statement :).

Just one last point. I will sit and watch them do this and applaud them. Not sit there and knock them every bit of the way :)

Not really, in the earily sixties the cold war was at its height and there was a race to get to the moon, today there isn't a race, so they look and provide comfort for those lucky enough to get the job.

We live in a far more risk averse climate these days, back in the 60s they would probably have kept the shuttle flying with the foam falling off, afterall, one launch in 200+ was damaged by it so that is a 0.5% risk of mission failiure due to foam.

You may also recall the fire in the apollo missions http://history.nasa.gov/Apollo204/

How long would the rectification of this take now, less than 12 weeks in '67, compare to the last shuttle problem that had it grounded for
(STS 107 1/16/03 > STS114 7/26/05) about 2.5 years.

I'm sure we could take a satelite launcher such as arianne or a US equivilant and mod it quickly to travel to the moon and back, but the solution under design is far more comprehensive than that.

Sounds like a lot of money, but it's an investment.

Most of the contractors involved would be building weapons for the same amount of money otherwise - you only need look at the list of companies.

Which would you rather?

That's assuming that those willing to spend the money on getting to the Moon would spend it on those 'urgent problems' instead - if they had no choice.

I hope Man does go back there and carries on striving to expand our horizons. I'd rather see us making some progress where we can, instead of banging our heads against brick walls trying to fix things which just seem to defy all attempts at fixing them.

We can't solve war, hunger, flood, drought, earthquake, tsunami, nuclear proliferation, pollution, extinction, poverty, tragedy, death, disease etc. etc. etc. despite all the assurances from different quarters that 'if only' we did this or that, then we could eradicate such-and-such problem forever.
