Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
WHy why why??? I just bought a US robotics wireless router, did everything it said but now i cannot surf wirelessly on my laptop as i cannot connect to the site i mention on the topic.
Also, do you use the wireless network thing at control panel to make it work? My laptop is picking up my neighour's connection but not me..why..oh why.... :(:(:(:(:( |

Try browsing to an actual website instead. (BTW _ how are you managing to post here?) Quote:
Have you managed to access the setup pages of the router? There may be some settings to adjust. I'd also suggest you enable encryption security on your wireless network, unless you want everyone in the neighbourhood to have free access to the Internet over YOUR connection. |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
How do u enable encryption?
And btw, by using the USB Wireless adapter, my laptop is running at CPU 100% right now and refuse to open IE! wth?..... By network wireless thing, i mean it's the one in control panel. |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Try a proxy
|
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Ok, my highest priority right now is to get my laptop from 100% usage to 20% or whatever the safe lvl is. :(
Btw, let me just type what my manual says. "Launch a Web browser, in the location or address line bla bla bla, type http://192.168.2.2 to access the Web User interface" The problem is, i can't access the site!!! |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
looks like your 'puter isn't picking up the wireless signal yet... if you have a cable (and network port) can you set it up that way first, then switch to wireless?

verticalforce, :welcome: to CableForum.
As said above, the 192.168.x.x range of IPs is reserved for private networking, and is usually the range of adresses used by home networks. As for enabling Wireless security, have a look at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=8435 |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Sorry Scared, it should be 2.1 on my recent post, it's a typo.
The web interface is the address, and i can't get in the address, so.... i think i'll just go over a corner and cry.......... Anyway, anyway knows how to downgrade my laptop usage? __________________ Btw, my laptop detected my wireless connection but it's still cant load any web pages? It even says the connection is very good.... :( tried my neighbours connection again and i can load pages although the connection is poor... hmmm.... Omg, all this thing is confusing. My firefox still says can't load everytime i enter http://192.168.2.1 |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
try 192.168.1.1

Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
ARGHGHHHHH HOW SILLY OF ME!
i actually attempted to connect to the address by using my pc with the modem and not my laptop which wirelessly connect to my router! I'm through now, yeshhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!11 Ok one more problem, sorry guys! Do i choose the option "cable modem or xDSL router?" I use NTL 1MB and i dont think ntl use fixed ip so this might be it. And it also asks me host name and mac address. omg? Do i put the big macdonald address? I genuinely do not know but they have fill my mac address apparently but not the host name, what do i put as host name? |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
yes choose cable modem
|

Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
But i have to enter it! My router is dumb! It's american. ;)
Ok take a peek at my hostname and tell me if its right. I got it from a website of ip to host name conversion. renf-cache-1.server.ntli.net Btw, for the ip address, do i type the proxy that ntl use or my real ip address. thx. |

The IP address should supplied automatically - i.e. your external IP address (effectively the IP address of the router on the NTL network) - not something you should set. Sounds to me like you've selected the fixed IP address option, in which case your ISP would have supplied hostname/IP to you. Go back to the initial setup and pick the dynamic IP option. |

there's only 5 options.. Cable modem or xDSL fixed IP xDSL PPoE xDSL PPTP BigPond Damn..i'm screwed....where can i find hostname?... |

Because the 'default' with cable should be that you're using dynamic IP - no hostname (you can't find one because the ISP hasn't given you one!) |

Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
okay just browsing through this whole story.
advice connect your router to the modem, switch NTL modem off for say 1 minute, then switch it on again and normally after that you should have internet through your router, otherwise at the back of your US robotics router is a little hole that you can press with something thin like a paper clip and hold it for roughly 10 seconds (you should see all the lights on the router flash like a x-mas tree...) then try again to switch off your modem and connect the router to it. if you dont get a connection then try calling the US robotics helpdesk as NTL wont really help you with routers. hope this works. ps..... why do I always have calls like this at work not alot of info, and the whole shabang |

Its brand new, i bought it from ebay though, have registered the model no on te web and everything.
The model number is 5462 or something like that....i think....i'm too exhausted to even type after 2 hours of constant trying. The only reason i bought this curse thing is because like you said, they make it soUnds so easy. Hell, the picture at the setup page has a child playing computer, surely it will be THAT easy, right? NOT. my model is the one with usb wireless adapter. anyone know if i am not able to configure the setting, can i still connect the wireless modem to my Nintendo DS or PSP online capabilities, or can't i, since you have to tweaked the setting and all that... |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
open up th eproperties for the network adapter, and select repair.
I have to do this everytime I boot the stoopid laptop up with its wireless card. |

Go through the config as described - i.e. first option and try to avoid changing any fields you're not sure of or selecting any options you're not sure of. The first thing is to get the router to connect to the cable modem and establish a connection to the Internet. THEN we can start looking at tweaking any other settings. Good luck. |

Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Just reread the manual again and it says i actually need to connect my modem ethernet cable to the router and the router cable to the PC. Spo, basically i'm screwed. Totally. NTL use USB for the internet connection although there is an ethernet port.
Damn it. There goes 50 quids. |

Ntl do not use only usb for internet connection they offer both usb and ethernet. In your case you want to use the ethernet connection from the modem to the router then try connecting via ethernet to the pc until you get things set up. Set it up for cable modem but there really should not be any thing you need to change, most routers will work right out of the box. If you bought it from a main retailer (pc world, argos) etcx then you could return it I guess and go for a belkin or linksys router then at least more people will be able to help. I use linksys my self st the moment but have used belkin also. Both where set-up in under a minute on ntl and dsl. __________________ Is this the beast in question. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2005/09/10.jpg I'll help you get this set-up just keep hitting f5 in this thread and take your time :-) |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Yes, that is the router....
I dont think this router will work, it needs two ether socket on a modem and ntl only have one ethernet and one usb... |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
1st step turn off cable modem by unplugging power, turn off router.
2nd step make sure your cable modem is connected via a ethernet lead to the WAN port on the router. 3rd step turn on the cable modem and leave for 1 min. 4th step turn on the router. 5th step disable any firewalls on your pc. 6th step reboot your pc. 7th step connect your pc to the router with ethernet cable. 8th step open internet explorer and go to http://192.168.2.1 9th select cable or dsl modem, leave host name and mac empty and press finish. 10th step . all done. hopefully , rep me This router will work and is correct for use on ntls network I have just read the manual for it __________________ for anyone following the pdf of the userguide for his router is here |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
How can i connect the router with the modem and pc at the same time? They only supply one ethernet cable....and does pc have ethernet socket lol? I'm not too good at this...
What did you meant reboot? Restart? I've already pack things away since i gave up, but i guess i give it one more try. |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
you should have got a ethernet cable with the router as well, this is the source of your problems. ethernet cable is like 50p if you want i'll post u one 4 free. easy peasy after that.
If you have any issues givin out your address then i'm sure a mod or admin will vouch for me :-) Failing that buy one at any computer retailer. __________________ did you get a blue ethernet cable with your ntl cable modem? |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
I got one ethernet cable for the connection of modem to router. But my NTL modem is connected to my PC with USB. And i just checked my PC, it doesn't seems to have any RJ 45 conector.
I feel like screaming for buying this router lol. I dont really wat to use it for laptop, so screw the USB wireless adapter lol, i guess i can steal my neighbour's bandwith when online service for Nintendo DS comes out...if this doesn't work....... __________________ No, no blue ethernet cable..mine is the old silver box....it just says ntl:home at the top..... |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
any pc bought within the last 3 years at least should have a ethernet port on it.Worst comes to worst there are otherways to set this up but even if you have to buy a ethernet card for your pc and a ethernet cable your only a fiver away from the best possible way of setting it up.
Dont belive the ntl tosh, dont go usb its not very good at all. hm __________________ Then your brown cardboard box still has a ethernet cable in it, the first ones where beige. newer ones a light blue. __________________ And trust me, once you've been able to surf on a laptop whilst i the garden/loo etc you'll not go back. Wireless and a laptop makes broadband IMHO |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
sure....but that's the one ntl gave me lol, i can't just ask them to replace modem. :(
This sucks lol.... anyone wanna buy my 1 day old router?.... lol... |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
you get 2x cables with ntl 120,200 modems.
I'll have to go sleep now but well start this tommorow again. Have no fear this will work no problem hm |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
As HM says, don't give up, I'm a thick girlie type and managed to get my network working :erm:
|
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Damn..now the installation CD won't work...how unlucky am i lol? But it seems to run fine on laptop so i guess it justs that my cd drive is too dusty...
I could have set up everything in 5 minutes yeah....i've understand everything now, but the problem is that my modem and my pc is just not suited for the wireless router. I still have a tiny bit of hope left but i doubt it, it will just be another useless attempt. :( |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Righto I'm up :)
Setting off for work, if you get a tick can you take a photo of the back of your pc and also what bits you've got to work with and we'll take it from there. (brought a ethernet cable with me just in case you need one posting as well. Its even a ntl one):D |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Right reading through this with unsleepy eyes i can see a way forward for you.
1. Unplug the ethernet cable. 2. Unplug the usb cable to the modem if attached and walk to the back door and throw it out (lets not be using it) 3. unplug the power from your cable modem. 4. Press in the little reset button on the router and hold in for 10 secs. 5. After allowing the router to reset plug the ethernet cable from the router (not the WAN port) to the pc (there will be only one rg45) (as in pic) http://x1.putfile.com/9/25603492517.jpg 6. go to http://192.168.2.1 select cable or dsl modem, leave the host name and mac blank and hit finish. Got to the wireless tab on the menu and then to channel and SSID. In the network name filed type in a name that identifies it to you (ie. bobs wireless), make sure enable SSID broadcast is set for now as well. 7. Unplug the ethernet cable from the pc and router. 8. Plug the ethernet cable into the WAN port on the router and then into the ethernet port on the ntl modem then re attach the power to the ntl modem (see pic) http://x1.putfile.com/9/25603533758.jpg 9. Go to the laptop and make sure that wireless is on. 10. Press start go to my network places and from the left hand side select 'view network connections' 11. As per the picture below select ' view available wireless networks' http://x1.putfile.com/9/25604172797.jpg 12. Look for one with the same name as yours and double click it. 13. You should now be connected. 14. If you need to connect a pb via a wire then you'll need a ethernet cable from the router to the PC. 15. Any questions then please feel free to pm or post here. Mark |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Your information is very helpful handyman, i even call my more tech-savvy friend, and he suggested me to install desktop network pci card and after he tweaked a little bit with my usb modem, my wireless is now working!!! Hooray!!!
Not for my laptop though, it works but i don't think my old laptop can handle such pressure since it's getting to 100% cpu usage all the time. At least i can use wireless for gaming eh? Also, should i put password on wap/wep? WAP password is too long and i don't think my gaming device supported it, so could i just put password on wep? There's an option where you can just type what I want and it will generated key for me. Should i choose that? I don't want to remember like 46 digits of passwords. Anyway, i'm very chuffed right now. Sorry guys for my extreme noobiness. :dunce: |
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
UPDATE: i choose WAP pre-shared-passphrase. Is this alright?
|
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
yeah thats an alright encryption...I have seen it with some routers that it makes the wireless a little bit unstable as in dropping speed and tiny things like that but its generally the best protection but I dont think your gaming stuff likes WPA-PSK....might still have to go for WEP 128 Bits tho.
|
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Yep, i only have 1mb NTL BB, and you are right, the encryption seems to make my wireless speed vary a lot lol. But it doesn't matter as long as my connection is safe. My router already blocked like 20 access based on my security log. 0_o
|
Re: Cannot connect to 192.168.2.1
Vertical, you always see things in your security log and you can "ignore" things coming from ip's in the following ranges 10.*.*.*, 172.16.*.* and 192.*.*.* those from the 10 most likely come from your modem. the others are just normal things like people portscanning you so keep the firewall on the router and also have a nice firewall on your pc to be safe.
