Re: SteamPowered.com

Looks like a Poplar Proxy prob again then :(

I noticed it because I fired up Halflife for a quick game and Steam brought in the weeks update box, but it was empty, clicking the 'News' Box just brings a browser error.

Ho Hum - another day in paradise

Thanks for the answers

Re: SteamPowered.com

Tried Cosham proxy and it works !
cosh-cache-4.server.ntli.net

These proxies I tried earlier do not work with streampowered.com as well as my Poplar default ones:

swan-cache-5.server.ntli.net
hers-cache-8.server.ntli.net
bagu-cache-4.server.ntli.net
colc-cache-4.server.ntli.net

Why do we have to continue to put up with these useless things :(

Re: SteamPowered.com

We really need a quicker and more direct way of reporting these proxy errors, I've so far spent over a month with my own personal queries and only today was the Poplar fault with my servers escalated to Network management, I added the steampowered.com site to my problem report but it will probably take another month before that one is looked at.

NTL really need to sort these proxies out, (and Cogent over 450 ping tonight and dead slow to all Cogent routed sites - although thats off topic for here), these errors are far too frequent now and for steampowered.com to be failing on what looks like a good proportion of their network (if my testing of about 10 proxies is anything to go by) is quite frankly pathetic.

NTL's network is pretty poor at the moment - add to this the terrible 'channel 7' problem with their tv, and the delaying of new channel launches because their network is rubbish is just beyond belief - they should be paying us to use their service !

ok [rant over]

:)

simbr 15-09-2005 22:33

Re: SteamPowered.com

It's still possible the problem is on the steam end - I know of one specific example of a proxy problem where the problem was a block on the remote end rather than anything wrong with the ntl proxies, and the affected proxies themselves are working OK for other sites.

IanUK 16-09-2005 18:35

Re: SteamPowered.com

I've just had a call from NTL regarding the Poplar proxies, they guy told me that Valve are currently blocking the Leeds and Poplar Caches from accessing steampowered.com, and that it should be sorted in a day or so (not sure how that affects the Hersham/Colchester etc ones but anyway I guess its all related somehow).

Presumably someone has been a naughty boy (or girl) in those areas ;)

Blimey, Cogent and NTL contacting me in one day...I must go and lie down..

Re: SteamPowered.com

Still having problems here..... :( any updates from NTL yet?

btw mick, thanks for pointing me to this thread :)

IanUK 20-09-2005 09:48

Re: SteamPowered.com

No updates yet, I imagine this will take weeks, if not months - EBuyer and Betanews took almost a year to fix.

Sadly this is becoming a regular occurance with these proxies, the actions of one muppet somewhere causes a website/company to ban the ip range - thereby banning thousands of people instead of the one or handful actually involved.

We see a similar thing with Rapidshare, whereby the Proxy address gets banned due to 'too much activity'.

Its only going to get worse..
If you are an NTL customer then parts of the web are slowly becoming no go areas for you - Rapidshare, the webs largest filesharing site is virtually unusable, and now steampowered, the worlds largest FPS...worrying isn't it :(

Hi there, i'm on the Luton NTL proxy here in Bedford, and am too being blocked from steampowered.com and sub-domains.
Thanks, FiRe.

Re: SteamPowered.com

I can confirm that www.steampowered.com is not accpetable from Luton. Also shacknews.com also not working. Phoned CS Tech support and they tried at their end - they got the front screen up and one popup that said page not displayed.

There are other message on the forums reporting problems accessing www.steampowered.com.

FiRem00 21-09-2005 11:36

Re: SteamPowered.com

I've tried using cosh-cache-4.server.ntli.net:8080, and it works, thankfully :)

dave.molloy 21-09-2005 11:57

Re: SteamPowered.com

Yup, cosh-cache-4.server.ntli.net works fine.

Phoned up NTL again. After about 20 minutes of being treated like a Moron - Oh there is some maintenance on the cable stream your modem is on. I said that it has been like it for 2 days (which it has) same reply she said - maintenance on channel ? - fop off me thinks

h,mm am on the nrth-cache-1.server.ntli.net. 1 and I dont have a single problem getting on the steampowered.com site

IanUK 22-09-2005 21:20

Re: SteamPowered.com

That proxy is fine here too, but many are not.

A moderator at steampowered asked Valve a day ago about them blocking NTL, today they posted saying they are categorically NOT blocking NTL users.

The ball is back in NTL's court...

I just wish they would fix or get rid of these proxies, they are crap.
Shacknews.com still broken here too.

Not funny any more...

DocDutch 22-09-2005 21:50

Re: SteamPowered.com

Ian...am on the nrth-cache-1.server.ntli.net proxy and I dont have any probs even getting on Shacknews ;) so try that 1 perhaps...okay opened fine in all browsers :)

can you ping their server at all on 68.142.120.133 ???

IanUK 22-09-2005 22:17

Re: SteamPowered.com

Thanks, it works fine on that one, the problem is that currently I have to set different proxies for different sites, its a real pain in the...

One for my Cogent server, one for Shacknews, one for steam, one for betanews etc etc..

simbr 22-09-2005 22:43

Re: SteamPowered.com

It is probably the network owners, "Limelight Networks", rather than Valve themselves who have instigated the block.

Re: SteamPowered.com

Ian, any luck with NTL yet? I'm deffo ringing this evening.

IanUK 23-09-2005 14:08

Re: SteamPowered.com

Nope, I told the executive office about steampowered.com on the 14th of September, still nothing has been done, I was told Valve were blocking NTL customers - Valve have since denied this - it still doesn't work, neither does shacknews.com which appears to be on the same network (LLNW)

To say I'm sick of the poor service is an understatement, please do ring them and raise a reponsetek form, but I imagine they will ignore like they have been ignoring everyone else from steampowered.com that has complained.

Chrysalis 23-09-2005 17:03

Re: SteamPowered.com

the executive office is either ill informed about how these proxies affect things or they been ignorant and passing the buck, either way the future doesnt look rosy for us.

Re: SteamPowered.com

Steampowered.com and Shacknews.com are back working correctly on Poplar tonight !

Ah yes, of course, everyone at ntl is 'ignoring' complaints, just like they always do :erm:

oh hang on ... they are working now ... obviously someone missed the order to ignore the problem. Then again, maybe it wasn't an ntl problem at all ......

Simcut 24-09-2005 07:05

Re: SteamPowered.com

ignored is probably the wrong way of putting it Paul, slow is more appropriate :)

Steampowered is now working on my normal Luton proxy (cache server 6 I think it was!)

:D

I hope its working for everyone now...

10 days from first reported, yep I'd say ignored, or perhaps more correctly, acknowledged - then ignored.

In fact, if you knew the history of my complaint (ask Mick) then ignored is quite a polite way of putting it !

Anyhow they are working now :)

In a large Company 10 days is not a very long time - it was never "ignored". There is a large difference between ignoring a problem, and not being organised enough to actually deal with it. :)
