Blue Screen of Death

Well since I upgraded to XP and went 64AMD I've not had any of these.Last night I had 6 in a row and actually had to physically hold the stop button on my PC to get out of a start up,blue screen, start up loop.

I noted that the PC was a little warmer than usual and decided to leave it until this morning. It seemed ok and I did a thorough check through systems and hardware(after the error warning this morning from M$ help) and I can find nothing flagged.

Yesterday I did some maintainance with disk clean up,Win Optomiser Platinum 2,Adaware,Spybot.

I also had notification that ZAP needed upgrading which I also did. This then did a spyware scan of it's own.At this point Eset's NOD32 flagged a trojan which it deleted.

This morning I went to windows update(which funnily enough was the site I was trying to reach when this shutdown, blue screen loop began last night)and found that there was a driver for my Radeon 9700 pro card to download and install.

This morning I've had one program(Terragen which is a beta and a new upgrade so I'm not too alarmed) go to a black screen during a render. After that I've had one more blue screen.

I've been back to ZAP website because this has caused me problems before with a couple of bad upgrades but can find nothing flagged except for 64bit AMD processors but the problem wasn't one that had any bearing(summat about making sure DEP was working which it is).

I did install a Freecom 250 GB external hard drive about 2/3 weeks ago but I've had no problems with it.I also found about two weeks ago that the drivers for the Radeon Pro had become uninstalled/missing but downloaded them and everything was fine after that. The system had been roaring and straining which made me check the hardware and the drivers but it settled down after the reinstalled drivers).

So anyone got any ideas? It seems fine at the moment though I bet when I try to post this I'll get another blue screen.

If you don't have any software that monitors CPU or internal case temperature, try downloading this: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download.html

If any temperatures go over 60 I think we're looking at heat problems.

Troubleshooting Windows STOP Messages

Look it up on here, see why it's happening.

Or alternatively just enter bios and check temps- although i still think it could be software.

Re: Blue Screen of Death

what error message did the blue screen give???? you could try a restore back to before it all happened then if stable do one thing at a time until either all will work or you will be able to identify the cause

I just had to shut down as it started all over again..Again the casing was warmer than usual and the heat from the back... :Yikes:. I went to the site but can't see which file I should download?

I have speedfan (to keep an eye on my temperatures) running upstairs (it doesn't work on my laptop)

Just another option for you to look at.

I use that Dilli but it says my mobo is a nforce2 and even that my CPU is at -128 degree's

Cool! ;-)

Actually, I'm using Speedfan on three desktop machines and it's excellent - much better than the mobo manufacturers' own hardware monitors!

What does it say on the blue screen? The following will stop it rebooting.

Right-click My Computer... Properties... Advanced... [Startup and Recovery] Settings... [System Failure] Automatically Restart <-- untick

I thought I'd try again :D

I've noticed that this forum always seems to leap to the conclusion that it's hardware related :erm: Have people ripping out memory chips at the mere sight of a hex address.

Yeah I cant see anything in the OP that says its running hot. It might be but who knows.Ive also not seen coggy say anything about it in a while is it all ok now???? :)

And Mr Greencreeper you still owe me a steak from ages ago now:( ;)

Incognitas, if you're getting a lot of heat, that suggests you may have a fan that's not working or a heatsink that's not properly mounted. Don't go on using it like this; if things get too hot, you may succeed in frying some valuable bits of silicon.

Take the side off your case, a) check all the fans are working (sounds like a new setup, so there won't have been much time for dust etc to build up, but a fan connector may well have come loose) and b) see if you can find where the heat is coming from. If it's your CPU (is the heatsink hot?) or your graphics card, immediate action is needed, as both these can kick out a fair amount of heat. Some CPUs can fry within seconds of booting if they're not cooled at all.

And, since you're going to be touching components, it's a good idea to take antistatic precautions.

Hallo!

I'm back. :cleader: :cleader: :cleader:

It was a hardware problem. At the end I registered a temperature over 70%.I turned it off and took it to my local PC shop.My Radeon Pro 9700 was stuffed. :bsmack: One new GeForce 6600 later I'm back.I decided to give the opposition my money instead..Now I have to try and get some recompense back from Overclockers. :(

Good grief! ther's been 4132 posts since I was last here. :Yikes:

I quote 'on inspection the Radeon 9700 Graphics card that is fitted is faulty(running hot, causing graphics corruption & blue screens).

Frankly I don't care what was wrong, I just need a graphics card that works for longer than 9 months. :(

Radeon 9700s need a good cooler anyway as they tend to run hot. Most modern high end graphics cards have GPUs that are probably more powerful than the average CPU was a few years back, and tend to produce a fair bit of heat. If the heatsink is not properly mounted (or has been knocked out of alignment), or if the thermal compound is getting a little old, it's easy to overheat it. In fact, it's easy even if it's just in a badly ventilated case.

But your new GeForce 6600 is probably capable of producing just as much heat. ;-)

Well thus far no BSD.I had to laugh as it was actually reffered to as a symptom on the error sheet I was given.Since when did Blue Screen of Death become an official term to describe hardware failure? :D

certain error codes on a BSOD could well point to hardware failiure though ;)

Glad its sorted and I hope you was not fleeced :)
