[Merged] iPod Nano

New iPod out now.......

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje....0.3.1.1.1.1.0

What do people reckon. I personally think its fantastic, but cheeky to keep the iPod Mini prices for less storage.

iPods seem to be like PC's these days. As soon as you get on out the shop its out of date !

BTW - iTunes 5.0 out now too for those interested.

Re: iPod Nano

Saw this last night, it looks amazing, can't believe how thin they have managed to make it. They have of course changed from a hard drive to specially created flash mem chips. but at only 2GB and 4GB I don't think I'll be getting one just yet.

upgraded to itunes5 this morning and don't like the new stream lined look at all.

Agreed. I'm upto 15gb on my 20gb one now, so couldn't have anything less. Thinking about a 2gb nano for the trouble and strife though.

I actually like the new iTunes look. Its pretty cool looking.

Re: iPod Nano

It seems like they are putting the colour screen on purely as a gimick - if they didnt, it seems like it would be about the same price as a shuffle. Its a bit of an odd one.

How much is it??

The reason for the high price is the flash memory they are using as it is still a bit costly at the moment.

It costs £139 for the 2GB version and £179 for the 4GB version

Re: iPod Nano

Would rather them work on the battery life of current devices, it's what put me off buying an ipod and buying a sony mp3 player.

Eeeek if i had one it would be well scratched!

Re: iPod Nano

Yeah thats the thing with my Ipod, it gets scratched really easily.
I'm still happy with my 3G version.

The Nano looks cool and is really thin its incredible, though at the end of the day its just another gadget, and mine fits in my pocket fine as it is.
The hardcore gadget fans will be adding it to their christmas list, there is no doubt there.

Ipod Nano faults

Quote:

The most widespread complaint about the otherwise highly-praised device seems to be that the color display screen gets scratched extremely easily.

Nano owner Brian Cason posted one of 250-some threads in response to a recent post on Apple's discussion board about screen scratching.

"I don't really care if the case on my Nano gets scratched but my screen has scratched up so badly that all the images are starting to become distorted," Cason wrote, echoing the sentiment of many others in the discussion. "I have only carried it in my small pocket in my shorts and nothing is in there to scratch it. I still can't figure how the screen looks like it has been rubbed with sandpaper when the entire time it has been safe in my pocket (with absolutely no items)."

But this week several users also started complaining about screens cracking, or failing, inexplicable. A Nano owner set up the site, flawedmusicplayer.com (formerly ipodnanoflaw.com) to tell the story about how his Nano screen shattered after just four days, to see if others have had the same problem, and to suggest that Apple recall the Nano and use stronger screen product.

"It is way too fragile. Apple markets it in a pocket. Hell, Steve Jobs himself pulls it out of his when he announces it," wrote the site host, who himself was smitten with the Nano upon its release. "It was in my pocket as I was walking and I sat down. No, I didnâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t sit on it."

An appropriate Apple official was not immediately available for comment on the alleged problems with Nano screens.

Some Nano owners have written to flawedmusicplayer.com, challenging its premise and arguing that they haven't had any problems with their screens. They chalk problems up to user abuse and reference an Ars Technica report that shows the Nano holds up to extreme circumstances.

Several, however, emailed with similar screen failures and debated whether the problem is caused by a design flaw or poor manufacturing, maybe just in an isolated batch.

iPodnn pointed out that at least one iPod repair company, iPodResQ, has temporarily raised the price of Nano LCD repair "due to LCD availability and overwhelming demand."

Last June, Apple agreed to settle several class action suits over the battery life of earlier iPod models, offering extended service warranties and $50 store credits to consumers who lodged complaints.

I'm certainly not buying one now... How bout you guys?

Ahem. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...7&postcount=14 :)

Seems to be a major problem and Apple are going to have some grief on their hands. Have you seen some of the brainwashed Apple cult followers in the Apple forum? You have to laugh really :)

And I am certainly not going to buy one now. I wasn't that eager to before either...

Stuart 25-09-2005 18:45

Re: Ipod Nano faults

I wasn't going to buy one anyway as

a) They have too low a storage capacity.
b) They are too expensive.
c) They are not actually that small. Admittedly, they are extremly thin, but are quite tall.
d) The screen is too small, and (IMO) being colour is an unnecessary drain on the batteries.
e) I have had two iPod 3g's. One was effectively dead on arrival (no screen), and the other is just over a year old, and already needs it's logic board replacing for the second time.

That's why I ditched the ipod.

ipod nano query

just bought one of these as a birthday present. Are they compatable with usb1, cos in the specs it says usb2? i hope it is, but slower.any information greatly appreciated

punky 25-09-2005 19:29

Re: ipod nano query

If it is anything like the iPod mini, it is compatible with USB1, but it won't charge. Apparently USB1 doesn't have a high enough voltage for charging it.

Perhaps a cheap USB2 powered 4 port hub would do the same job then?

Yeah apparently scratches even in a cotton pocket, and the screen cracks very easily

EDIT: Just read your responce again, heh, yeah I heard something about that aswell, but apparently it doesnt scratch as easy as the nano, Ill ask a few people about it though :tu:

but NOT admitting that it scratches, and in the unlikely event that it did you could always buy the case that they sell for it (or rather you can't since its not available yet)

Re: [Merged] iPod Nano

I think we need to get a sense of proportion here. For a start, the article linked at the very top of this article demonstrates that the iPod Nano is designed to be very robust. Yet ever since the story hit the news about some people having problems, it sounds as if everyone's started to think 'the iPod nano is badly designed and/or made'. That clearly isn't the case, or else the one in the Stress Test would have b0rked the first time they dropped it.

The facts are consistent with what Apple has said, and let's face it, even the bloke who started the website to track the problems has accepted the explanation. Faulty batches happen. It's a fact of life. It's very unfortunate for Apple that it happened early on as this will have dented the product's reputation. But they have at least done the right thing.
