Free is hardly every reliable or good. You could always use your NTL space if you're with them. What do you need out of the hosting? Features, space bandwith? You can't go far wrong with a cheap package off I-websolutions to be honest!

There is a 'I want a website' guide on this site somewhere. Check the Internet room in the CF Basement.

I seem to recall having a read it was pretty good.

Some sites have you pay a subscription fee to use their help totrace family sometimes its worth it others you might feel it wasn't try to decide which is best for you. Also ther are good records with the latterday saints will try and dig out the info again.

Have you have just registered a domain name, or did you sign up to have it hosted, as well?

right

if you have made it to the control panel, you will have got the first email - they will send another when your new domain resolves to the I-Web server.

In the meantime, you will have to use the IP addy to access your new domain.

Full access to your domain will take about 48 hours for the address to propagate to DNS.

Initially it will display a holding page, until you upload an index.html file to the public_html folder of your webspace.

:)

Well - if you get it going today - let me know :) I signed up for a i-web thingy today and am having no luck. Although I did manage to upload index.html to my site.

it can take less time, than that, but 48 hours is a good estimate.

In the meantime you have to use the IP addy for access - have a play with the Fantastico scripts, although, unfortunately, there isn't one for a family tree app

For that you could look at something like

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&ct=...DQDrbURenjidkH

although I havn't tried it, myself.

ah - as far as i know the emails are sent out automatically - if you signed up for domain name and hosting, I-Web should handle the nameserver thing for you, just a matter of time - as soon as it resolves, you will get another email & you should have IP access.

- frustrating - nothing worse than a new toy that you can't play with ;)

I wouldn't worry about the nameserves i-web will sort it for you. :) DNS Report will tell you were they point once it all resolves! http://www.dnsreport.com/

You and me both :)

Incidentally I got an email just now saying that my name hasn't been resolved yet. So I think we'll just have to wait a while before fiddling :)

hiya, the good thing about this is that it hasn't cost you a huge amount of money and you can take your time, even if it seems a bit daunting, at first.

Can i first stress that I am a relative n00b at this website malarkey, myself. What I have found useful is to 'play about' with the various 'ready made' sites available via the 'fantastico' scripts in the CPanel.

You just have to bear in mind that each installation will use a SQL database & that your disc space will soon fill up if you install too many things at once. Luckily it is just as easy to delete stuff via 'fantastico' as it is to install it.

Other than that I would recommend getting to grips with a FTP client, I like the FireFTP extension to Firefox, which is basic but simple to use. :)

Re: webhosting sites

ummm what does this mean?

You chose to install in the main directory of the domain www.xxxxx.co.uk, but there are conflicting filenames, therefore we can not proceed. Following filenames already exist in the main directory of the domain xxxxx.co.uk (path="/home/xxxxx/public_html/").You must manually remove these files before proceeding with auto-installation:
index.php

How do i manually remove files?

Re: webhosting sites

cPanel (the control panel) has a W(hat) Y(ou) S(ee) I(s) W(hat) Y(ou) G(et) editor that allows you to create webpages in an interface similar to Microsoft Word.
My host has this little guide for using it: http://helpdesk.valcatosupport.com/c...?do=read&id=17
It's not terribly advanced but it's a start - there may be a couple of other articles in there that will help you.

Re: webhosting sites

thanks for your help guys!
chickendippers that guide is really helpful, thank you, but i can't seem to find any reference to the file it says already exists to delete it??

Re: webhosting sites

It'll vary from host to host, if you want to PM me your website address I might be able to figure out what you need to do. Alternatively if you want to take a screenshot of your public_html directory and PM that to me that would enable me to help you.

ok - you chose to install a 'new' site in what amounts to the 'root' folder of your webspace (which is the public_html folder) - the 'new' site wanted to install a file called 'index.php' - and there is already one there.

It is better to install any new stuff in its own folder, which you can specify when you run the fantastico script - e.g if you ran the Wordpress installation, you might tell it to install in a folder called 'blog'. It will then be available as http//yoursite.co.uk/blog.

Re manually editing the site - you would need an FTP client to do that - be careful though -I seem to have messed up my site by doing just that ;)

can anyone recommend a good FTP client to use with IE?
thank you!

chickendippers 12-09-2005 15:03

Re: webhosting sites

FTP clients are stand-alone products.
Crystal FTP Pro (http://www.casdk.com/prod/cftp/?lref=www_frontpage) is possibly the best client available; it's easy to use and packed-full with features however the trial has a time limit.
I don't know any really good free FTP software, personally I think Filezilla is hard to use.

There are two stages to making your own homepage, the first is building the site itself, the second is uploading it to the webspace. (some programs will do both)

The idea is that you get the site running on your 'local' pc then upload using ftp.

- I think you should get an ftp client sorted out first, but that is just imho.

Ultimately, it isn't 'difficult', there is just a lot of new stuff to take on all at once - you'll suss it, given time - and there are people on here to help :tu:

Re: webhosting sites

ok depending if you are on linux or win2003 hosting you will need to upload your site to public_html directory for linux or the httpdocs directory for the windows hosting
