Trailing the first friday quiz of September

Unless my boss comes over all funny/peculiar and gives me friday off, I'll start the ball rolling at 6.30 pm.

And for once I know all the answers :)

I hadn't realised just how much work putting the quiz together involves - I won't be so competitive next time :D

If anyone's discovered a way of sending chocolate by PM, you might find a clue slipping your way ;)

Look forward to seeing you all on friday afternoon :):)

Few players realise the amount of work involved, researching the questions for accuracy, getting the mix right, etc.

If you can get to your local library they are a great help, and don't forget to check and see if the answers can be Googled (the one I messed up last week was the one I didn't check).

Good luck https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/01/10.gif

See you Friday at 18:30 hours.

Great! Maybe I won't miss *this* one!!

That's my only regret at being so good at them on here!! :spin:

It's also why I keep a piece of note paper handy so every time I think "Hmm, that would make a good question" I can write it down before I forget it, then I can just look at the list and pick 25 Q's off there.

God punished them by sending them out into the earth amid mutual enmity, but then took mercy upon them; warning them not to follow Satan, he promised them that all would be well for those who followed God's guidance, while those who rejected it would suffer hellfire. The early Shia commentator al-Qummi says that Adam came down to Earth on Safa and Eve on Marwa, both peaks just outside Mecca; there Adam remained weeping for 40 days, until he repented and God rewarded him by sending down the Kaaba and teaching him the hajj.

The Qur'an also describes the two sons of Adam (named Qabil and Habil

maybe the question was flawed :)

It takes quite a few minutes to actually "post" the quiz, bear that in mind around 6:20pm.

Don't let it worry you, I said at the time that I'd withdrawn that Q, due to time constraints, but will use most likely it in future. So i'm hardly likely to give the answer here now,am I? ;)

what struck me, the first time I 'hosted' a quiz, was the challenge of replying to a post 3 pages ago, while still being aware of a new one - paper and pencil is as good as anything for keeping track of who has answered which question, in my opinion ;)

Sound advice, was what I did. Wrote whoever answered correctly next to each question on an old fashioned "hard copy". Problem I had was replying to those who got it wrong (very fast paced).

Some tips for aspiring quiz masters:

Create a Word document or similar with your questions in so when it comes time for the quiz you can just go "create thread" and cut and paste the document in.

Have a copy of this open in another window so each time a question is answered you can simply cut the question from the document and replace it with the poster's name, this lets you easily answer those "what questions are left" posts and also helps with collating the results afterwards. (You can also add each correct poster's name at the bottom and update the number of right answers each time to speed things up further)

Don't use the "new posts" button, use the "back" and "reload" buttons. This allows you to read eg message #2, check the answers and post "correct" or "wrong", then step back to message #2 to ensure that you don't miss any answers. (Hit reload if it was at the top of the page or things have slowed down to ensure you don't miss any posts that have been added)

Periodically go right back to the start of the thread to check through for edits/ amendments/ missed posts/ mistakes etc.

Re: Trailing the first friday quiz of September

In addition to Graham's tips, here's some of mine

1) have a good mix of subjects, with a variety of levels of difficulty, and if possible try have 2 or 3 "themes" (related questions).
2) Use txt files, generally smaller than equiv doc, and not as resource hogging as MS-Orifice
3) Use a better editor than notepad, my prefered one is EditPad.

4) Have the answers already set up in a file, with dot leaders ready to add names too
Answer_1 ..... <add name here when answered>
Answer_2 ..... <get the idea>

5) Add closing words, congrats etc to the file in #3

6) Prior to hosting, put the cat out, take phone off the hook, eat chocolate for that burst of energy etc

7) Maintain the answerers file during the game.
8) In the same file also maintain a line with which to paste the #'s left

9) After all Q's answered, conduct a quick check before pasting
10) Paste results. Breath sigh of relief, shout hooray, buy round of drinks etc

At the end of the quiz post that file plus the list of people that got the answers.

1. Graham etc.

That way, you have all the quiz info in one final post, and it saves people having to go back in the thread to find out what answer is for what question.

Well a) I already know the answers to the questions I've posted, so I don't usually need reminders (unless someone googles for something totally surprising!) and b) just make sure you don't post the wrong file...!! :dunce:

a. Yeah yeah. Some of us mortals do not know the answer to some of the questions. I just like to see the questions and answers side by side at the end.

b. You mean the file named 'answers', as opposed to the one named 'questions'? Yes, you'd have to be a real :dunce: to do that.

And Metawraith (please try and stay for the whole quiz) and Graham (it's at 6.30pm tomorrow, Friday 9th September 2005 (tie a knot in it to remind yourself :naughty: ).

Err, it was 'trailing' in the sense of 'there's a friday quiz coming up, don't miss it!' - just like a movie trailer.

And yes, the pedant in me knows that dictionary.com is having none of this as a meaning for 'trailing' ;).

Incidentally, has anyone sussed the answers to the remaining questions from last week?:
  1. What's the last sentence of Joseph Heller's classic novel 'Catch 22'?
  2. From which record did M¦Aà ƒâ€šÃ‚¦Rà ‚¦RÃâà ¢‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¦S take the 'Pump Up The Volume' sample for their single of the same name?
