Can not access Email

Hi ya everyone
I have 2 mail accounts with NTL. Both of them were working fine until I tried logging in today, and one of the accounts is not working - everything is set up OK in OE, but the same thing happens when I use webmail -
Your username or password has not been recognised. You may have accidentally made an error when entering it. Remember, the text you enter is case-sensitive.
I have always used the same password for both accounts and there is no capital letters or anything else like that.
Any body any ideas?

Re: Can not access Email

I've been unable to access my NTL e-mail via Outlook for a whole week now. I can access the mail via the web but I keep getting a timeout in Outlook with this error code 0x8004210A I've never had problems before in the 3 years I've had my NTL account until this week. I checked the status page and the recent work is supposed to be finished. I've e-mailed their support with the info and not had a reply. I gave up trying to get through on the phone as I have better things to do that sit and wait.
There was nothing wrong before the recent "upgrades" and I'm not too pleased. I have noticed that my IP address has changed this week (I had the same IP address for nearly 3 years before this)
I wonder if it will get fixed or even recognised as a problem at all.
Suppose I'll just have to put up with it until they get sorted.

Re: Can not access Email

TezmitcH, see link for information on you error code. It seems like whatever upgrades NTL have done may have been to do with security as this is what the KB article refers to.

TezmitcH, liamboyle06, it would seem that any patches that are available for OE or your office version need to be installed in order to fix the problem. Click here for the windows updates and here for the office ones (both only work in IE :()

Re: Can not access Email

I already have SP3 for office installed. I tried the new reg key entry also and that didn't work. Anyway going away for the weekend now but will update this post if I get it working

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Can not access Email

I don't use ntl email services, so I can't be sure, but AFAIK ntl has recently blocked (or is in the process of blocking) email clients that are configured with the IP numbers of the servers rather than its name - this is because they are changing the IP numbers.

Might be an idea to check your settings and see that the email servers are set up as (I think): POP server, pop.ntlworld.com, and SMTP server as smtp.ntlworld.com. I'm sure that the server names are given somewhere in the help or FAQ sections of this forum.

Patrick

I have OE set up with the correct POP & SMTP servers as obtained from their website, but it should not make a difference if using webmail.

On Another note, I tried to send a test mail to the account and came back as unknown receiptent??

Re: Can not access Email

liamboyle06: log into the email management screen at
https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi-bin/xtrmail
using the username that works and check that the other username is still listed

If it is there try going to the password update screen at https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi-bin/chgpwd and doing a null update (enter the current password three times) to refresh the account.

TezmitcH: If you log into webmail, are there any large emails in your inbox? If not, are you running any antivirus packages like mcafee, norton or netguard and does the problem persist if you turn them off?

Thanks for that advice, unfortunatly the other account is still not found there, but is available to use if wanted.

Re: Can not access Email

Have you tried re-adding the account?
The only way it can have been removed is if you or a CS agent actioned it.

Re: Can not access Email

I've got a similar problem. Everything was working fine until this morning - now i can't send or receive and get the errror code 0x8004210B and the messge -

"the operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or ISP"

Naturally when i called ntl they didn't know what hte problem was!

Does anyone know what the code means and if there is anything i can do about it? I've had this error before, and it usually goes away in it's own time..

thank you!!!

Bit of a long shot, liamboyle06, but I remember a year or two back there were a few cases of users who, for some unknown reason, had their usernames and email accounts incremented - i.e. "johnsmith" and "johnsmith@ntlworld.com" became "johnsmith1" and "johnsmith1@ntlworld.com." Never got it figured out how or why it happened, but it might be worth checking out - see if a similarly modified version of your non-working username/email address works.

I noticed in another thread someone else was having a similar problem, mira, and at that point the ntlworld website wasn't responding, and the email servers (I use a different email provider anyway) were giving terrible pings. Site's Ok now, and the mail servers are pinging Ok, so maybe your problem will have sorted itself?

Hmm, see my response to liamboyle06 in the post just before yours, Buzzby. I don't think this is a situation that's likely to occur, but I have known it to. If Support is saying your account is inactive, maybe you should check it out?

Sorry patrickp no does work. My a/c exists, if i try to create a new a/c with my original address it fails because it already exists!
I did try your idea, no go.

Try logging into the email management system using any of your email addresses at
https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi-bin/xtrmail
If the email address you are having problems with is listed there and is not the main account, click "modify" then "continue" (without making any changes) to refresh the account.

If the account is not visible or is the main account go to
https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi-bin/chgpwd
and enter the username and current password three times, if the account is still present on the system but inactive this should refresh it.

Re: Can not access Email

I have been unable to receive email since Sunday (sending is still ok and logging onto webmail is still ok).

I use Outlook 2003 and I get the error message:
Task 'pop.ntlworld.com - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Are other people having the same problem or is just me?

Checked using the method above and my email address is still OK.
the only thing that may have caused the problem is that I had a windows update at the weekend.

What else should I do?

Re: Can not access Email

Are you running any AV software?

Georgeh 18-10-2005 10:43

Re: Can not access Email

Yes, NTL Netguard (loaded a couple of weeks ago) and I have the windows XP firewall switched on (I switched off to see what happens, but no effect). I also use a Linksys router with a hardware wirewall, but I have not changed anything on this router.

I also created a new account in Outlook and tested the connection and it passed all the tests, including receiving email. But I still can't download email.

The only thing I cannot test is if something as changed on the NTL server.

Sounds like a problem with ntls pop servers. What AV are you running, does that have mail virus protection that has resulted in the pop on the mail settings being replaced with "localhost"?

Georgeh 19-10-2005 00:00

Re: Can not access Email

It's NTL's Netguard. So I think there should be no problem there.

I'm having problems - and did so last week - using email via two PCs, one running Outlook, one OE. Getting broken connection/timeout error messages. Nowt on Service Status I see (better to come on here to find out what's going on). Can anyone from NTL enlighten?

5 mins after you posted, a nationwide email problem was put up on the service status page.

Cheers for that

Re: Can not access Email

Now Sorted!

I switched off Netguard and all the emails down loaded. Switched Netguard back on, tested it with new email and everything dowloaded. Looks like it was Netguard that was causing the problem.

By the way NTL do not support Outlook and would not help me.
