Expelled? Why?

BBC
Quote:

The father of a pupil at an exclusive private school plans to sue over its attempts to expel the boy.
Rhys Gray, 15, from London, has been a student at Marlborough College in Wiltshire for three years.
But the school has said it does not want him to return to the sixth form in September because of a poor disciplinary record.
Rhys's father is taking the college to court to try to stop them barring the teenager from returning.
Quote:

He said: "We are bringing the case quite simply because we feel we've been unfairly treated and because it's a product of an over-reaching power that private schools generally seem to be exerting."
And his son says that the 400 misdemeanours he is being punished for are all relatively minor.
"It was chewing gum, forgetting books, stuff like that," he said.
He added that he had been caught smoking and once disciplined for having beer.
OK I can see their point about minor things but I'm with the school on this one, minor midemeanours are one thing but 400 ocassions? I think someone has a discipline problem :erm:

Re: Expelled? Why?

It's a farce. People know the rules (or should do, having been pulled up for breaking them 400 times), then complain when someone says enough is enough. My only gripe here is why the college allowed him to stay on after so many offences? Particularly when one of them involved him having alcohol (a criminal offence at his age anyway).

What is the world coming to? And what the hell does his father think he is doing, by standing up for him?

Outrageous behavior. He is slagging off private schools and then trying to go to court to force one to accept his son. Muppet.

Chimaera 22-08-2005 18:30

Re: Expelled? Why?

Probably because his father thinks that as he paid for a private education, he can call the shots and over-ride the school's decision. Of all the schools I deal with, it tends to be the parents at the private schools that will stand and argue with me when they don't like the fact that their little darlings have not made the grade! ;) And of course I don't back down.

Exactly, from a posh public school, probably a spoilt obnoxious little **** who thinks he can get away with anything because he has a rich dad.

Kick his ass out.

Obviously daddy wants some form of return on his £29000 p/a investment :erm: Personally he would be better off teaching his son a few lessons in behaviour, respecting authority and humility.

A perfect example of a case where the parent(s) refuse to support school discipline.

Is it any wonder there is a shortage of teachers....

Re: Expelled? Why?

You do have to wonder quite what he was expecting sending his kid to a British public school like Marlborough - a holiday camp, perhaps?

I believe his case is that the school is finding an excuse to throw him out to shore up their grades, which is possibly true (but good luck proving it). But presumably in a private school environment you have to put up with that sort of thing - they're in it as a business after all.

Getting expelled from public school isn't all bad of course - many of our notable historical figures started off being given the boot, although amazingly enough the internet comes up empty handed on a 'Famous Public School Expulsions' list, so I shall have to resort to steam-powered paper research.

Not quite. They tend to register as charitable trusts.

People who abuse the system on which this country runs, as far as i`m concerned, have no rights.
Anyone who goes against the law and order in this country have no rights, if we went to other nationalities homelands and acted as some people did in our country, we would have to suffer the consequences! Why can`t that happen here?
It`s because ::::::::: Sorry,,,,,,,,,,,,, Ranting now but i feel so strongly about all the **** thats happening to our once great land. WTF is going on??????????

Back on topic. Breaking the rules once or twice is almost excusable (in a sort of we deserve a second chance way), but 400 times? Either the child has mental issues, or he has a discipline problem. Perhaps daddy should be looking close to home for the source of the problem.

Allthough 400 time is unacceptable behaviour, we have no time span on the time it happened, IE 3,4 or 5 years.

Chimaera 22-08-2005 21:31

Re: Expelled? Why?

It says he's been a pupil there for 3 years - so that's 400 offences over 3 years = 133 per year = about 44 per term.
I'd get rid of the little toe rag for sure!

I know but even in every year added together at school even a hundred times would be a lot surely? and this is just things he has been CAUGHT doing.it's probably going to be an even larger figure than that :eeek:.

At the ned of the day, if i had a child. If they had broken the rules over 100 times id probably expect them to be expelled.
Especially if they were caught smoking or drinking. It is illegal!
In mind are the 12 year olds who hang around outside our house until about 10pm. Kids now a days need showing who's boss!
I actually don't think been expelled from school will be too hurtful though, it's just an excuse to have legal time off school:erm:

Re: Expelled? Why?

I read the story with a sense of disbelief.

When you do the maths - he has gone to the school for 3 years.

Each school, year you might get 12 weeks off (6 during summer, then there's Xmas and the half terms). That's 40 weeks of school. Or 200 days per year.

In 600 days of school, he has committed a misdemeanor every 1.5 days.

Expelling him is too kind. I'd look to make the kid really suffer.

And this habit of everyone suing everyone else just because something hasn't gone the way they wanted is really peeing me off.

The father should have picked up on this issue LONG ago and had a few choice words with his kid. He should be backing the school, not suing them.

Of course, to do that would mean accepting that he has a responsibility as a parent to keep his kid in line...

Nah, it ain't gonna happen is it? :erm:

Re: Expelled? Why?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, it seems that one of the few "misdemeanours" that the father feels is worth being considered worthy of action is the boy being in possession of alcohol. Maybe someone should tell him that it's not just against school rules, it's against the country's rules. But presumably if the police picked up his little boy for that he would just try to sue them instead?

What concerns me the most is that the parents should be helping to prepare sonny boy for the real world. What happens when he hits the age of legal responsibility, then goes and breaks the law 400 times and expects to get away with it. Real life ain't like that. The boy deserves a kick up the a*se from his dad... about 3 years ago.

I'm thinking about some of the students I teach...Some are committing an offence at least two or three times a day per day..and can we get rid of them?

So he could send his son to a state school..he'd probably not be expelled that easily from one of the many such establishments available. ;)

I don't know, but you should be able to. If not, it sends out the wrong message that people can do what the hell they like and get away with it; and that lesson is being taught at such an impressionable age.

It's no wonder there is so little respect for authority from the younger generation.

For about the third time in the past few days, it seems like a judge has shown some real common sense.

This bit amazed me though:

Quote:

...had been arrested aged just 13 for being drunk and disorderly. As he was detained he verbally abused a police officer, swearing at him and calling him an "idiot".

And yet Daddy seems to think it's the school that believes itself to be above the law!

If he were my son, I would give him a bloody good slap.

Re: Expelled? Why?

Well I would be willing to bet that most Kids will break one rule or another, mainly misdemenors a good 100 times a term, Out of school behavior should not reflect on his schooling, unless of course they are of major consequence, I hardly call an incident of D & D major. The lad obviously needs extra guidence somewhere, an theres no doubt some of that needs to come from the home. Exclusion is not allways the answer.
Prince Harry admitted smoking pot but wasnt ejected from Eton. Kids make mistakes, some more than others, and most kids will do something like smoke somthing or drink something or some other more serious mistake, its up to the adults including the parents to offer extra guidance when its nessecary.

IMHO Private school sucks anyway, generally because many of the pupils suffer delusions of grandure in a severe manner as they believe themselves to be above regular schools and kids, and if a less fortunate kid attains a place in a private school they often will make it hell for them. However regualr schools are apauling in their ciriculum and teaching methods. I am totally appauled at the level at which i feel my children are at having put them into mainstream school all their life, to me they have been taught very poorly, I should have known this I supose as my brother is also very inteligent but accademically backwards, and that is down to the way mainstream schools work. My eldest child has just started seniors and from my experience he is currently accademically ready to enter juniors. Thats about the difference between private and mainstream, mainstream being about four years backwards.

Still the worse thing you can do is send your child to a mainsteamn school after them being in the private sector, that is potentially able to totally destroy their future accademic achievement

IIRC, a £200,00 0 lesson... serves the guy right. Strange thing, he also said that even if he'd won, the boy would not be returning. Something about relations having broken down with the school. As if 400 misdemeanours hadn't already broken down relations...
