Re: VM transferring management of email services to Junara
Seems to be very little point being with VM lately
Beginning to wish I'd jumped when the opportunity was there will prices go down if there's no email? |

I guess so . . back in the day we had free 'webpages' also
I'll be back with lots of questions regarding how to change my email provider, what I can and can't keep, how this impacts email addresses linked to online gaming, and a whole lot more . . . Where's the VM community forum when you need it  |

You should create some free email accounts from Outlook or Gmail and start changing things over before things go tits up. |
Re: VM transferring management of email services to Junara
Alternatively I could dump email altogether
We still (just about) have a postal service so if people need to get in touch they can write . . if they're able to. Not sure how I'd receive my monthly VM bill without email, but I sure won't miss those emails telling me how brilliant the TV viewing is and what I could be missing :D |

The only account linked to my ntlworld address(from 2003) is my VM account. I transferred any other accounts away from ntlworld some time ago.
I assume it will be easy to move the VM account email to one of my other addresses. |

Well, possibly except a reason for a customer staying with VM rather than moving on, so not to lose their email address. Very old legacy email account should have been shut down ages ago. Why do they still work, maybe incompetence on VM’s part? |

The junara.com web page has more information for VM customers.

You need an "authenticator app", presumably to be able to login to their site.
Even the dedicated VM information gives no actual plan costs. I would never consider a company that tries so hard to hide its prices, very shady. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
If you enter your email address it will take you to prices and I think you can skip the auth app stage.

I had folders set up (I use thunderbird) with most of my 'important' stuff in them.
I already had one gmail address, so simply copied the folders from the NTL address to the gmail one |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
I also use Thunderbird to move emails between email accounts. It’s very easy to do and it preserves the emails original date and time.
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Not a surprise really, VM stopped giving email addresses several years ago.
As for moving emails away, I'd suggest Mailstore Home. Once this is setup it can copy all the email from VM to your PC/Laptop for archive/storage. Perhaps another reason not to have a public facing forum ... :-) |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
They are being incredibly shady hiding their prices. 5.5 million potential customer paying 99p to keep an email address. That is a lot of money to then find at some point during the first year they want a monthly subscription which ends up being a lot .
Glad nothing important was ever tied to my ntl email |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Not having to faff about changing and/or forwarding the NTL emails was really the last reason for me staying.
They've actually been pretty decent 'overall' over the last 26 years or so, but in the ever changing world of technology advances and money saving cutbacks they've just become another bog standard provider. The BB speeds are fantastic . . if speed is important . . but if it isn't there are now many other options compared to years ago. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
ISP webmail always has you tied to the ISP and they can and often do remove your access when you leave so it never has been a good idea to use ISP mail as your main log anywhere. I used AOL originally then went to hotmail now have outlook and gmail various accounts with various usages and different degrees of anomality
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Yeah, I decided ISP email was a bad idea a long time ago.
I ran my own email servers for years, and moved away from using my ntl address. My wife kept on using hers until I finally decided to leave VM, at which point I created her a new address using Dreamhost as the provider (CFs email also used them). At the same time I decided to shut down my own servers and moved my email domains to use Hostinger. Both those providers had similar prices (about £1.50 per month). At the start of this year I moved them all to another company, which costs me about 50p a month (and that includes both mine, my wifes, and CFs email). |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
The same here - I stopped using my ntlworld email address for anything about ten years ago, and set up forwarding - I haven't received anything in it since I consolidated my VM and O2 accounts to a joint (non-VM) email account.
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Don't get me wrong here, it's not really a MASSIVE problem to create new email addresses for me and the wife and then transfer important stuff, it's just the time and effort to do so (and the pain from the wife who will give me ear ache and not VM) and having to tell everyone of the changes.
It also seems you're now getting less and less for the money you pay, but hey that's everywhere now isn't it :D |

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Way too expensive.
If I were still on VM, I would take the free year and use it to move off their email addresses completely. Since I'm not, I assume my old addresses will just cease to exist, not an issue, as they are not actually used anymore. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara

And yes, far, far too expensive - £6 a month for 1 Gig storage? The early 2000s are calling demanding their usage limits back! Of course they are relying on people not wanting to lose their old email address and are prepared to pay whatever to keep it. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Started moving my emails to gmail/outlook a while ago. Ntlworld accounts were hacked several years ago thanks to a VM data breach, hence loads of junk/fishing mail. Good riddance, they can go swivel for charging for what others are providing for free.
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Mine seems to have stopped working , was looking just in case something stuck on it . Meant to forward but that was always hit or miss. Simply can't get on it.However no message, what a surprise!
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
I also think part of the issue with email is people use it as storage, and end up with so much stored, it's a nightmare to move. Personally I archive emails off to local storage on a regular basis for safe keeping. That way my "ISP" mailbox is never too large and if it went bang, I still have the older emails archived elsewhere.

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
wow, thanks for heads up
I use my old ntlworld emails and use imap using thunderbird on a couple of machines at home to access email, so I have the emails locally, but it's a pain moving all the shop accounts, bills, banking etc to a different email address :( the question is, do I move to gmail or outlook.com - i already have accounts with both |

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
One additional thing to check, and why you should have more than one email provider, is that the likes of Microsoft and Google ask for back up emails, and they can be useful in case anything happens to your primary email with them such as being locked out. At the least check with such companies that your virgin email isn't used for that purpose.
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
I have (not including the ntlworld one) 6 different email addresses -
Family & friends Utilities Shopping Travel (holidays/hotels/car hire/flights) One for logging on to public WiFi (use a VPN whenever using public WiFi) Gaming Used to have another for when I was contracting, but not used anymore as I’m retired I access them through a consolidated front-end (Gmail on PC, Mail on iPad) |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
I have outlook and Gmail providers all consolidated into Outlook I found Gmail does not work too well with 2FA when pulling in multiple accounts
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Does anyone have any advice as to how you ‘download’ your emails and move them to a different provider? I presume it’s very easy, but I’ve never had cause to do this previously.
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
What I would be doing it creating a new email address with Gmail or Microsoft and then forward any really important emails to the new address and then move all my accounts to the new email in the year you get if you pay the 99p

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara

You can now select all of the messages in your @oldvmaddress's inbox and drag them to the inbox for the @newgmailaddress.com, then the dates, email headers etc will be retained. However if you 'forward' emails from the old inbox to the new address, then the threads will all appear to be dated 'today'. Then repeat with 'Sent Items' and any other folders. You then need to start informing all of your contacts and companies you do business with that your address has changed. Microsoft have an annoying habit of calling different things, the same name. Outlook refers to (two different) applications for accessing email and also the underlaying mail infrastructure (xyz@outlook.com), so when you say you went 'outlook to outlook', it's unfortunately not clear as to what you mean. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Outlook desktop app to Outlook desktop app and to be honest the OP could just just set it up to pull the VM email into that and it will just sync all folders and then from there you can move everything to your new address. I have 5 email account pulling into my outlook desktop app and one of them is Gmail that in turn pulls multiple legacy email addresses that did used to include ntlworld.com mail . So all my email is synced into Outlook desktop app and then I back up system images so never have to do clean installs so it is all very safe
If they do not want to do it using Outlook app just make sure your VM email has no 2FA and you can just pull it all into gmail. I overcomplicated my answer as it appears plenty of others have too |

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Hello everyone,
I think this is a horrible way for VM to treat its customers. Although I do use Thunderbird with POP3, occasionally I need to find something specific, so I do a detailed search on VM's sever. In fact, VM's search is great. I have countless numbers of friends and businesses that use my VM emails; so for me to switch to (say) Gmail would be a nightmare. For a long time now, Virgin removes the email from ex-customers (ie those that switch to another broadband). That itself is wrong and the regulator should have stopped it. Moving from Sky or BT to VM, one can retain the old email facility but not vice versa. Why!!! There is still so many unanswered questions about the switch; eg long-term pricing, reliability, retaining the same addresses. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Virgin Media currently runs its own email service, clearly that costs money. They don't want to provide that to anyone they don't have to, and indeed to no one now. They have always been clear that they are related to an account and can switch off any that aren't.
Sky's email is a branded version of Yahoo Mail, and as long as the email addresses are in use Yahoo keeps them open independent of any Sky relationship, similar to it keeping Yahoo email addresses open. |

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara

Why? If you leave VM you aren't paying them a single penny and it does cost money to host email. So why should VM provide a 'free' email service to you? Well, not free, it's being subsidised by current VM customers. "Moving from Sky or BT to VM, one can retain the old email facility but not vice versa. Why!!!" Because BT and Sky allow you to carry on paying them a (small) sum of money each month to retain the email provision (like I said, this costs and they won't do it for nothing). VM have chosen not to go down that route, fine they may be missing out on some money, but that is their prerogative. Although I suspect that there are good historic technical reasons why they can't/won't do it. "There is still so many unanswered questions about the switch; eg long-term pricing, reliability, retaining the same addresses." Ok yes this is a concern, I strongly believe that any existing email addresses will be retained, it's just that a different company is taking over running the 'back-end'. Reliability? Who can say? I fully expect some glitches in the migration and some users will report a complete loss of all of their emails - nothing is ever 100% perfect. Long-term pricing? Well almost certainly to creep up. Right now, if you decide to take up the offer, it's going to cost you an additional £6 (I believe) per month for the cheapest option, but it will be free for the first year. So take up the offer, you now have a year to spin up a new Gmail etc. address and notify all of your contacts. After a year you cancel and don't pay anything. Of course what they rely on is that you can't be bothered or simply keep putting it off, until they demand money or they will vapourise your email address - what do you do? Long-term pricing, well suppose after three years they up the price to £10 per month or £15 or £20? You now don't have a year to act, you have 30 days - again what do you do? |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Not an issue really. Just move everything over to gmail/outlook. Ntlworld was a daft name anyway, and attracts junk mail since a major data breach by our beloved isp.

I only found out about it because of this forum. Some of the comms from VM have suggested they are doing this in stages rather than all at once as they said “through September” in one place on their website Q&A as I recall. Given they are only giving 45 days from when they initiate it for each account (plus a few months longer to restore if you miss comms) it really isn’t good customer service, regardless of how few use their email these days. |

I haven't had an email informing of this either, its only reading this forum that I knew anything about it.

It was due to Telewest (Flextech) owning half of UKTV, with BBC Worldwide owning the other half. If Telewest was bought by another company the BBC could trigger a "change of control" clause in the UKTV agreement forcing Telewest to sell their share in UKTV. To prevent that happening, the deal was structured so Telewest acquired NTL. https://www.digitalspy.com/tech/a252...of-uktv-stake/ |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
Quote:
If Telewest or Flextech were taken over or experienced a change in ultimate ownership, BBC Worldwide, the corporation's commercial arm, would be entitled to buy Telewest's 50% of UKTV. But NTL was so keen to hang on to UKTV that it changed the terms of the merger to become a takeover by Telewest - meaning it was actually a reverse takeover of NTL by Telewest with NTL’s shareholders and Telewest's shareholders ending up owning approximately 75% and 25% respectively of the combined corporate entity. Immediately after the reverse takeover completed on 3 March 2006, the legal parent company was NTL Incorporated (formerly Telewest Global, Inc., which changed its name to NTL Incorporated as part of the transaction) but the combined business was branded/referred to publicly as “ntl:Telewest” for the period before the Virgin Media rebrand. So, in effect NTL did buy Telewest but did it in a somewhat convoluted way. |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
I've been using an ntlworld email for decades.
Frankly I think it's appalling they are removing the service for all customers. They should have stopped it being part of the service for new customers retained it for active accounts taking other services (Broadband etc) and use the Junara option for those who have want to continue using the email but have or are moving to other suppliers for Broadband, TV and phone. I'm not prepared to pay £60py to Junara (after the free period) so I'll have to update a lot of online accounts which I started today and found that a very large number of them have no provision to do this as they use the email as the primary ID as well as contact info. For these orgs I will have to create a new account and keep the old one to retain access to the details of previous orders etc. One such account is an annual travel insurance policy with 235 days to run so I'll have no choice but to use the Junara free period. It is an incredible inconvenience (hours of work!!) |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
TBH, I have found pretty much all online accounts will allow you to change email, either within the online system, or by contacting their support.
|
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
I think the fact they are migrating it to a paid provider that is what sucks.
I still also find it astounding that people did not see this as a possibility ever. I always expected to lose the email address if I was to leave NTL at the time the email was chosen and I never expected to do over 30 years business with only a break from 1999 till NTL rolled out cable modems which of course will be when I got the email address so as soon as Microsoft bought Hotmail that became my main address. Plus the more I spent time thinking about this since 1999 I have changed my main email addresses countless times from AOL to Hotmail and now Gmail and Outlook Aols lasted a long time because I used the container service over a dial up from someone else switching from free provider to free provider . That went Screaming.net (owned by localtel and was bought by next on the list) worldonline lineone ukonline back to Aol then ntl for cable |
Re: VM transferring email services to Junara
When I think back on the 'selling points' that attracted me to NTL, they've all now vanished (or are about to) into the cost cutting bin.
