Ann Widdecombe has died, murder suspected

Ann Widdecombe, the former Tory minister, has died
Ann Widdecombe, the former minister, MP and MEP, has died aged 78, her representative says.

Former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe dies aged 78
The former minister, MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe has died aged 78.

A long-time Conservative politician, she later joined the Brexit Party in 2019, which then became Reform UK.

She also gained public attention for her time on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

Widdecombe was born in 1947 and entered parliament in 1987 representing the seat of Maidstone in Kent.

She had previously served as a councillor and worked for the Conservative Party.

Under John Major she was an employment minister and then prisons minister.

Widdecombe stood down from parliament in 2010, as the Tories returned to government.

She then re-entered politics in 2019 as a Brexit Party MEP.

In the 2019 general election, she stood again for Westminster in the seat of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport for Nigel Farage's party, but she finished a distant third behind the Tories and Labour.

Interesting development.

Pretty sure that the lunchtime news said that she was 70, but everyone else says 78.

They have since been released.

Not just released, but the police made a point of saying that they (whoever they were) is no longer being investigated. So not just a case of ‘insufficient evidence’ but more, ‘we are convinced that this person had nothing to do with it’.

She was very security conscious, so must have either known or was expecting the man that arrived. They either flipped and turned on her for some reason or wanted something from her that she refused to give. She's the type of person that wouldn't just roll over and give in and, unfortunately, paid with her life.

Quite right, as of now we know nothing about this case - it’s equally likely she was killed by little green men from Mars! Basically all we know now is that she is dead, and there is sufficient evidence to treat it as a 'suspicious death’, no more, no less.

I believe that the police have asked people to not make spurious comments or speculations on social media; they are not helpful, could well be distressing to her friends and family - fat chance that that request will be heeded, as we have seen in this very thread. Paul has (rightly) removed some posts which had just veered off into complete fantasy.

By all means have your own theories, but at least ground them in logic, base them on what is known and published.

I agree. It's not unusual to arrest someone quickly and then to release them but to exclude terrorism so early on with no on charged seemed counter to their own request not to speculate.

But easy to say from the side lines.

I've seen wildly varying reactions from people saying they were glad about what happened to people saying that they were very sad.

A lot of comments seem to be dependent on political allegiances (I have friends right across the political spectrum). Those on the far right seem to think that it was done by the left and those on the left seem to think it was done by the right to silence her.

More moderate people have expressed their condolences, even those who didn't agree with her political beliefs.

Ann herself was a great believer in free speech and said (upon the death of John Smith) that it was "absurd" to suddenly heap praise on someone's political views just because they had passed away'.

The suspect in the brutal murder of Ann Widdecombe had Russian communist literature and other political ideology at his home, it has been claimed. In a dramatic escalation, counter-terrorism officers yesterday took over the investigation into the death of the former Tory minister and Reform UK spokesman, with the killing being treated as a suspected politically motivated terrorist attack.

The Express and the word true are rarely used in the same sentence. And why suddenly is everyone and everything bad “communist”?

Why not wait and see what the police say?

Damien 14-07-2026 14:41

Re: Ann Widdecombe has died, murder suspected

It is another case of waiting. Obviously, 'Russian communist literature' gives some direction on the guy's political views, but it could be just part of a broader spectrum of political literature he has spanning ideologies. Ownership of political literature isn't always an indicator of support for that ideology. We would need to see what else is there, which we might not know for a while.

It's also not clear what it means. Is it full-on propaganda? A book about Russian communism? Literature written by a Russian communist?

Appositely enough, Ann Widdecombe studied PPE* (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford (Lady Margaret Hall, in her case).

*as did Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, David Cameron, William Hague, Lord Heseltine, Shirley Williams, Edwina Currie, Barbara Castle, David and Ed Miliband, Ed Balls, Lord Mandelson, Jacqui Smith, Ruth Kelly, James Purnell, Nick Robinson, Toby Young, Robert Peston, Liz Truss, Ed Davey, Rishi Sunak, Nigel Lawson, Jeremy Hunt, and Rupert Murdoch…

The police investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe is examining whether a leftwing or single-issue cause may lie behind her killing, the Guardian has learned.

Among issues detectives are investigating are whether a hatred of Widdecombe’s strong views, such as on homosexuality, was a factor. They are also examining whether extreme hostility to the Reform UK party played a role.

Homosexuality was a strange one where she was concerned. A lot of the gay community disliked her because of her views, attempts to block gay rights and for saying that "one day science may produce a cure"! On the other hand, a lot of gay people say that she was the most polite right winger that they had ever spoken to and, despite her homophobic views, she had gay friends who she treated with courtesy & respect.

It’s almost as if calling something -phobic and slinging it back in someone’s face as an insult is a deliberate avoidance tactic, intended to shut down discussion rather than to engage with someone whose views you strongly disagree with, isn’t it.

Yes, i've read what he said and the prayer he said for her.

Ann really loved her cat and many were concerned about what had happened to him, so her management have put out a statement to say that he was quickly removed from the scene and is being well looked after whilst her family decide what to do long term.

Nuanced, rather than black and white…

Quote:

Prayers offered for the soul of Ann Widdecombe who I knew a bit, both as an adversary and as an inconveniently congenial acquaintance.

I have never felt quite so drawn to someone personally and repulsed politicially simultaneously. It happens not infrequently now but she was the first.

I would like to say this all works out in the end, and it does in eternity. In this life it is hard to see.

But the old order has passed away.

Heavenly Father
You have called your servant Ann
out of this world;
release her from the bonds of sin,
and welcome her into your presence,
so that she may enjoy eternal light and peace
and be raised up in glory
And dance with all your saints.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

They should show the cat her body, animals understand death, if it doesn't see her then the cat will think she has abandoned it

Lovely words from a decent man

They did say that Aloycius 'was removed from the scene', so I think he must have been there when she was attacked (unless he came in when the carer or somebody opened the door and found out what had happened). I agree with you that animals understand death and that it's best to show them the body so that they can process this.

Free speech is not a luxury or a privilege. It is a basic right, which we accept is legally qualified for the good order of wider society.

Be careful what you categorise as luxuries Richard. Those are the things the state can most easily argue cannot be afforded and should be removed.

There is no real concept of ‘free speech’; anything you say or post can have ‘consequences’. The sometimes mentioned case of ‘shouting FIRE in a crowded theatre’, if it were to result in panic and deaths, you absolutely would be in legal trouble, both here and in the US, and probably in most jurisdictions.

It’s a case of balance, what would the proverbial ‘average person’ thinks is maybe distasteful but fine, if that’s what they believe. The comments made by the person in question about Ann Widdecombe, at least in my opinion, went well beyond that, if true, then they were disgusting and I would not want such a person working with me, or for an institution that my child may be attending, or being funded by my taxes.

I think, rightly, that ‘free speech’ has to be deliberately vague. This person has, I believe, been charged - presumably will end up in Court and a jury will decide if what they said is OK or not.

Damien 16-07-2026 19:18

Re: Ann Widdecombe has died, murder suspected

I don't really think it should go to a jury to decide whether she is 'ok or not'. It's not 'ok' for her to have said that. It was horrible. But it shouldn't be a criminal offence. The only time I think speech should be criminalised is if it's direct abuse to someone (i.e racially abusing someone) or an incitement to violence.

Saying horrible things about someone upon their death gives a way of what kind of person you are, but I don't see why it should be literally illegal.

Him.

“Heather” Herbert is a man.

*His* behaviour on social media is classic male pattern aggression. It is demeaning to attribute his behaviour to that of a woman. Violence, and threats of violence, are overwhelmingly a male problem and arrest/charge/conviction statistics are skewed unhelpfully if we pretend that we cannot name things for what they are.

Damien, hypothetically we meet up in person, and I tell you to your face that I ‘hope your mother/father/child dies screaming in agony from cancer’? Would you a) just accept it as my opinion; or b) punch me very hard in the face?

I suspect b), which actually makes YOU the criminal here. Yes OK you could probably claim you were provoked and get a reduced fine. But think about it, I have ‘said some words’ that have provoked you to commit a criminal act.

Is that OK?

Violence, and threats of violence, are overwhelmingly a male problem and arrest/charge/conviction statistics are skewed unhelpfully if we pretend that we cannot name things for what they are.

This is a picture of him. His name is Scott.

Re: Ann Widdecombe has died, murder suspected

A “trans-woman”, so called, is a man who thinks he is, or wishes he was, a woman. Nobody is under any obligation to believe him or pretend that he is. In certain circumstances it is actively unhelpful to entertain the delusion. I maintain that in the realm of crime, or any other in which official statistics are important, accuracy is essential.

Obfuscating reality by choosing to say ‘her’ while we all know it’s a ‘him’ is not conducive to the flourishing of society.

I don't think I could or should get you arrested. I kind of think it's one where I should get no criminal conviction because you were asking to be punched in the face.

Yes, we don't have the absolute right to say whatever we feel like without any possible consequences. The offending comments were said before it was known it was a murder, but even if it had of been death by natural causes, it was still an unpleasant thing to say.

Once the death was confirmed as being a murder, the perpetrator refused to apologise.

Why should it be an arrestable offence? This is the police turning up at your house to arrest you for saying something offensive, no incitement to violence, just people being nasty online.

I am all for platforms banning trolls/nasty people, but there is a whole other level to facing criminal proceedings and all the stress and consequences that come with it.

The law needs to change on some of this stuff.

It does. But perhaps the law needed to be seen for what it is first. It has been misused against people who, you might say, are critics of the new State religion of Ekwalitee and Diversitee, wantonly and outrageously over the past couple of years. Graham Linehan being arrested by armed police at Heathrow and questioned for hours being an egregious recent example (Linehan wasn’t even charged in that case, and the Met has just had to pay him £25k compo).

Now it’s being used against one of the poster girls boys of EDI, a middle-aged man in a dress, who said hurty things about a right-wing politician, suddenly we’re up in arms about how draconian this all is.

Funny, that.

Indeed.

The Free Speech Union has offered to assist Herbert if he reaches out to them, even though much of their caseload comes from those getting persecuted for knowing that men in dresses are, in fact , still men (and Herbert’s highly visible online activities suggest he’s enthusiastically involved in that).

I am seriously considering joining the FSU myself.

It's called incitement. Because the comments encourage others to carry out attacks on other people with similar views as Ann Widdecombe. And her murder may well be an example of that.

I think we need to be careful as to what qualifies as incitement. Posting negatively about people could cause someone of unsound mind to resort to violence, but I don't think that is enough. The standard needs to be whether a reasonable person reading the statement would think it's encouraging or promoting violence. Additionally, maybe lying about someone in a way that might encourage violence against them (such as saying 'Mr FakeName at 123 Fake Street is a nonce') would qualify.

If you start making random connections between a negative statement and violence, then you could justify arresting all sorts of people. To give an example, there is a trend in politics to call other democratically elected politicians 'traitors'. I hate this. I think it sours political discourse and is dangerous in that it amps tensions and hate, which in turn could lead to political violence. After all, real traitors have often been met with violence. But I don't think that it should be an arrestable offence. If they were to start putting mentions of violence as well as calling people traitors, then it would be.

We need to start from a place where there needs to be a high threshold to meet for the police to visit you and arrest you. I would imagine that's a traumatic experience (not to mention a waste of police time).

Re: Ann Widdecombe has died, murder suspected

Further discussion and speculation on X this morning suggests this actually isn’t about the Widdecombe tweet any more. Herbert lives in Scotland and seems to have been charged under the SNP/Green rather draconian Hate Crime & Public Order(Scotland) Act 2021. It seems unlikely that the tweet would breach that Act, however, once the spotlight is turned on some of his other activities, they’re … unpleasant. And quite possibly offences under that Act. He is part of a trans extremist group called Bash Back whose demands for direct action against critics of gender ideology are concerning. He’s also associated with people who believe that ‘If people don’t show love … show bullets.’ Charming.

Of course whether that Act itself is a reasonable piece of legislation or a draconian attempt at legislating to enforce a certain sort of left-wing social discourse in Scottish society is another matter.

The ‘further consideration’ undertaken by Polis Scotland seems to have led them to charge him based on things other than his tweet about Widdecombe. That tweet brought him to their attention, whereupon someone clearly went WTAF and started taking these fools seriously.

Do you realise how offensive that is?

Lesbianism is a sexual attraction, not a skinsuit or an ineffable identity. Same sex attraction is physiological, you can measure it in a laboratory.

A male attracted to a female is heterosexual. Herbert is a man, he fancies women. He is not a lesbian.

Herbert is a man, by all legal and logical definitions, if HE is sexually attracted to females (women) then by definition HE is a heterosexual person.

Have the Mail might have strayed into dodgy legal territory in their haste to name him?

Quote:

The sub judice rule regulates the publication of matters which are under consideration by the court.
Matters are considered to be sub judice (Latin for 'under judgment') once legal proceedings become active.

Criminal proceedings are deemed active once a person is arrested, a warrant for arrest has been issued, a summons has been issued or a person has been charged and remain active until conviction.

No, naming him isn’t a problem per se. Simply naming somebody does not compromise a subsequent trial. If charges proceed, and the guy ends up in court, we will all know his name anyway. The risk to the mail is mostly arising from the question, what happens if he’s not charged? they are open to a civil action for libel at that point. It is with that in mind that they have led their coverage with all the quotes from neighbours saying what a lovely unassuming guy he is. They are defending themselves pre-emptively against any claim that they have damaged his reputation.

Re: Ann Widdecombe has died, murder suspected

Yes, and these days, with that case very much in mind, newspapers are supposed to balance the right to privacy against public interest, under the provisions of the human rights act. But these are still civil matters, not criminal ones. Naming him doesn’t expose the mail to criminal charges or compromise his chances of a fair trial. It *might* be grounds for him to sue them, but again, really only if he’s not eventually charged/convicted, or else what detriment did he actually suffer?

Jo Yeats, murdered by Vincent Tabak, who was eventually tracked down and convicted but not before the police and then large sections of the British media named and then persecuted a man called Christopher Jeffries, whose only crime was being eccentric enough that they could paint him as a probable pervert.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25625572

This has become the ultimate case study in what can happen when the press name a suspect and why they probably shouldn’t without specific and good reasons.

The Mail is sailing a little close to the wind by naming Kerry which is most likely why they’re trying to sweeten the pill by talking about how well regarded he is rather than demonising him as many journos did with Jeffries.

There has to be reasonable suspicion of terrorism if she was singled out for the fact of being a politician. The evidential bar would be high though, and if they think it’s straightforward enough to go after him for murder, then that’ll be that.

A cynic might add that it is useful to hold someone on suspicion of terrorism because the police get a lot more time to hold someone in custody for questioning where terrorism is suspected. But they still would have to show that suspicion was reasonable.

Delay in getting access to the recordings? I do seem to remember seeing a quote from her that suggested she had cameras outside (the joke being that anyone wanting to steal her garden gnomes would need to wear a mask). Few people would have cameras setup in their home, for obvious reasons, so ‘caught on camera’, may not be quite what it sounds like.

very easy to hide your ID on camera though. Why do you think so many youths are going around in hoodies and face masks. Well round here anyway. Does not matter how HD your camera is if all you can see is the eyes if that if they wear shades
