Both right......The building that has been destroyed by fire is on the corner of Union Street and Gordon Street in Glasgow city centre.

The Union Corner building, which dates from 1851, is actually connected to Glasgow Central Station, one of the busiest railway stations in the UK.

It was this one. Connected to, but not actually a part of, the station. For those who walk the city centre, it was a landmark, and if it’s replaced by anything other than a proper restoration/recreation it will indelibly change the cityscape for the worse.

There would be hell to pay if they tried - it would need the council to approve change-of-use which would go down like a lead balloon.

The real risk is that someone proposes putting up just another glass and steel box, gets turned down, and we’re left with a blackened hole in the ground for 10 years surrounded by wooden fencing with grotty fly-posters all over it.

The architecture there is all mid-19th century, built in local yellow sandstone. Union Corner was a grade B listed building which is about as high as you go without being a castle or national trust monument.

This was how it used to look:

There is a McDs at the bottom of Union street at the four corners. The station already houses a large hotel called Central Hotel. Thankfully the fire did not spread to that.

Seeing that building gutted by fore is heart breaking. Walked past it almost everyday and was also the location of a well known chippy - The Blue Lagoon.

A large number of businesses were withing the building including a tattoo shop, beauty salon and many others. Feel sorry for all those small businesses the most.

Station closed till at least Wednesday, with buses taking big diversions as Union Street was the main bus route to south of the city.

Thank goodness, this is one of my favourite hotels.

It transpires that Glasgow had 6 high-reach fire engines until 2023, when SNP government cuts to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reduced that number to 2. Both of which were out of action due to maintenance on Sunday when the city actually needed them. One had to be driven *from*Edinburgh*.

While I’m ever-keen to put the boot in to the SNP whenever possible, it seems to me this country (by which I mean the entire UK) has slipped into a dark place where we are unable to think strategically. We know the price of everything and the value of nothing, and that’s a potentially fatal flaw when it comes to equipment you hope you’ll never need but has to be there and in working order if the day comes you do actually need it. On Sunday in Glasgow its specialist fire engines in a Victorian city known for buildings going on fire. Elsewhere, it’s a Royal Navy that’s barely able to sail anything anywhere because ships weren’t getting built in anything like the right numbers for more than 30 years on account of the fact that a war wasn’t actually happening right now.

Herald report on fire engines (lack of): https://archive.ph/hExV6

Well it was destroyed and they need to pull down the remaining wall before it falls down. I highly doubt the building that will eventually replace it will look remotely similar.

Still strange to think I was stood across from that building Saturday night waiting on a taxi and after seeing it almost everyday it is no longer there.

I think this will be a litmus test of how Glasgow and Scotland’s political leaders really conceive of the city and the nation in terms of the value of its heritage, its built environment and future potential. Swinney’s talking a good game this week about government assistance, and we know it *can* be done - the building housing the Tesco over the road was gutted in the 80s and reinstated in 2 years. Whether it will actually be done remains to be seen. Sadly like you I’m sceptical.

It's again a case of the British electorate wanting low taxes and high services and politicians not being entirely honest with them about it. One way politicians have of trying to manage this dilemma is to get rid of resilience and cut down on things like fire engines and gritting capacity in the hope that any problems don't occur under their watch!

One of my first thoughts too! I guess they're a bit of a fire risk as well as being a health risk!
