Plastic room ?

Am going to refit a bathroom , surveyor is talking about vinyl walls. Look cheap and nasty to me. However I haven't really looked that closely at them. Anyone got them ? If so honest comments welcome

My aunty just had her bathroom refitted. She went for wall panels. She likes it but to me it just feels cheap. A proper tile and paint job cannot be beaten in my opinion. This isn't exactly what you want to read but hey it's my two cents worth.

The bathroom generally gets steamy then all sorts of issues occur unless you have very good ventilation. Damp spots paint pealing, pink spots from damp. Your biggest enemy is damp. Figure out what you want considering that factor.

Vinyl walls as in vinyl wallpaper or tiling? Or solid sheets?

That's what I am thinking. Somehow it's not right for the age of the house 1900s

From what I've seen think polycarbon clear roof sheets But with solid coloured sheets instead:dozey:

Does it work out cheaper, the wall hung junk? Also is it cladding? I know Trumbo said a person in a bath is not effected by a house fire but come on you'll be too close for comfort

Unless you plan to drown, I'm pretty sure you would be affected. :erm:

I've seen a "plastic" bathroom, didnt think much of it, had mine tiled.

Told its cheaper, but think that's down to labour. It's not an issue. Just feel it looks nasty. But only seen samples, gut feeling says no.

I have replaced several plastic bath sides for people who soon fell out of love for them. "Modern" doesn't always mean better. Whilst swapping them for wooden panels, I was shocked at the state of their "modern" plastic baths that they were assured would last 20 years, but only if scouring powder was never used on them.:shocked:

Re: Plastic room ?

Had two quotes , £26,200 & £ 25,950. Both said panels would be cheaper and quicker. One pushed them other was if you really want them be he wouldn't . So that's a no!

Nope. Good choice. For all that spend was ventilation included?

My new neighbour just renovated their kitchen and bathroom, painted the whole house and fitted a new cheap boiler all for £14K. It may only be a 2 bed house and they didn't fit everything themselves but 26K is highway robbery isn't it?

Vaulted ceilings, Edwardian hand-carved architraves and coving, stained-glass windows and crystal chandeliers all around his neck of the woods. Even their servants' quarters and stables are of a far richer standard compared with our council house and brick shed. ;);)

I had mine done in 2016, for 10K.
My bathroom is not particularly big.
The inflation calculator tells me thats now about 14K.

By heck 26k for a bathroom refurb, bit different from Ma filling that old tin bath in front of a coal fire on a damp Sunday evening :D

When did you come in:shocked: you have really covered it. Need a walk in shower , covering my bases, old age and all that. For the record it's a complete gut job . Even to moving a window and yes it is:D

Re: Plastic room ?

I'd love to 'cover the bases' for my aging body and it's unstable limbs, but no matter how much I try, the wife is very much against selling up and buying a bungalow.

Retro fitting the house (3 bed det) is obviously a few quid too far away to contemplate :erm:

Trying everything not to make my rug rats happy and move back:dozey: crazy as it seems I am happy to end my days here. Luckily the house isn't listed so moving a window is OK. Now thinking about adding underfloor heating, as everything is up anyway.

My doctors surgery has underfloor heating. It's a no brainer but already in a steamy room, will you be able to breathe?

I did have it sorted or supposedly. Around 10 years ago I had mine refitted and the kind lady surveyor said putting an extractor in the window would be less hassle than into the wall. Fast forward some years and it was better to be installed at the highest point into the wall. Now I have a bumhole in the window. I keep the fan spinning between medium and highest setting.

I'm old fashioned and just have a small window open all the time.

Admittedly it can get a little chilly occasionally, but it stops people lingering in there if others become 'desperate' for a visit :D

It's the same here, but the window gets shut at night....

We recently had a home inspection to check that it is all "up to code".

The bathroom fan has been sealed over with plastic since we arrived here in 2001. The outside of the vent had been blown off, and, despite being reported many times, the council don't give a toss, reportedly because "it's an electrician's job, and they won't climb a ladder to replace it".

The bathroom you pictured looked an American style setup. That was my reason for asking your location.
