Expand wireless signal from hotspot

Which type of device do I need to connect to my hotspot that then amplifies around my home?

Any recommendations please :)

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

what hotspot are you using? I have a 4G router but I want to change it to a 5G. If it is just a mobile device I have no idea but a sim router just works like a normal router

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

Hotspot from my pixel. Connectivity must be 5g. Then router a mix of 2.4 and 5 GHz.

No to SIM routers although a data SIM off Amazon and a SIM router is very tempting if it wasn't so damn expensive.

Three offered me promotion pricing on their broadband but no, not paying £20+ per month extra. They already get £17 out of me for unlimited everything which is my hotspot.

When I went into a three store they told me the three routers knocking about on eBay are unlocked ready for any SIM

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

They are my daughter has one as does a friend down the road. They both get good speed and switched from other broadband. I actually get the best speed here from EE (Lyca) and get 100 meg mobile so may well switch one day too but currently on the BT Essentials package as I am on UC currently

As for expanding your hotspot I have no idea but not researched it

you can in theory use a repeater/extender. I wonder if you could connect to a repeater that has a nic then connect that to a mesh system. Might be over complicated and not work anyway of course

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

I was just about to post regarding a repeater. I wouldn't mind an Asus router that has wireless repeater but which model.

Problem is connecting repeater to the hotspot. If I need to access the repeaters UI again I cannot retrieve the IP from my pixel because it doesn't show those details. 198.168.0.1 goes dead in repeater mode no?

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

It is not anything I have ever had to do . It does seem like it would be an interesting project though might pick up a repeater and have a play

Is there an app that shows all active IP connections including those through hotspot?

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

I wonder if this would work. Providing I’ve understood

USB to Ethernet adapter
Share the connection
Buy a cheap mesh system something like a TP-Link Deco S4(3-pack) AC1200Mbps
Use one of them as the router and connect to the pixel the others place as required

thenry 23-08-2025 12:52

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

I don't understand step 1, where are the connections made?

Just to add. My pixel is left on charge while tethering. Battery set to 80% charge and adaptive charging. So the c port is occupied

mrmistoffelees 23-08-2025 13:02

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

If you hadn’t had the pixel connected to power you could have gone usb from the pixel to the wan port of one of the mesh units

I’m Wondering if something like this might work

Oh ok. Well I have one of those for my fire TV setup which uses micro usb. I don't see why it shouldn't work. Nice one I'll look for one in the bargain bin :D only drawback would be it not being gigabit :(

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

You could buy(or perhaps you have an old one lying around unused) and set up a router in mesh mode(access point), so it will act as a WiFi relay between the hotspot(pixel with mobile connection?) and any device. The device will communicate with the relay and the relay will then communicate with the hotspot. As long as the router has the speed and level of WiFi you need(eg 2.4GHz or 5GHz), it should be ok. Guides to set it up are out there.

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

I brought an Asus AC3200 router. I also got a Belkin usb c to ethernet adapter mine is 60w pass through, I jumped the gun on eBay only to then find a 100w cheaper some days later..
https://www.belkin.com/uk/p/usb-c-to...NC019btBK.html

Anywho the router is in access point mode. The usb c adapter is working. Wireless has indeed improved.

To answer this question, yes there is an Asus app for this it's called ASUS Device Discovery

Do remember this though...

4. If the ASUS router in Access Point (AP) mode is not connected to the parent router, can I enter the ASUS router settings page (WebGUI)?
If the ASUS router is in Access Point (AP) mode and isn't linked to the parent router, neither the router nor connected devices can receive an IP address from the parent router. Consequently, you won't be able to access the ASUS router's settings page (WebGUI).

It's working :woot:

I guess now you need a decent Qi Charger to keep your phone charged while using this set up ;)

Is android ethernet tethering routed or modem , I mean the android device itself has it got a modem IP or is it already routed ?

The answer is the android device holds the wan IP and any connectivity to the android device is routed like a switch would assign IPs.

I guess I'll just keep my router in access point mode.

My Asus has difficulty in some areas of my home. Is this only tackled by repeaters or mesh or is there an actual router that performs exceptionally?

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

Would this

https://www.asus.com/uk/networking-i...gaming-ax6000/

be better than my current asus tri-band ac3200 ? Mainly range.

I managed to get one for peanuts so am experimenting.at this point. I've not yet received the device though.

Got it for peanuts . . . hopes it doesn't arrive in the same condition as the TV did :D

Hopefully not a box of Peanuts! Lol

That router looks awesome though.

Dude111 13-02-2026 20:41

It would be awesome if somehow you could make your signal go on the wire!!! (So it would go for many miles)

But then it wouldn't be "wireless":erm:

Dude111 17-02-2026 01:19

Hehe I guess it may not be! (Unless you can just ride under the line and pick up the signal)

The ax6000 is soo much more stable. The smart connect on the ac3200 is really bad constantly dropping and picking up the device wifi connection, in my case my smartphone.

Is there a reason you don't have wired broadband in your house?

Waste of money. I'm eagerly awaiting fttp.

Hopefully you won't have to wait long, use this site to see what's happening in your postcode.

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

I used your link in your fttp thread. Says cityfibre are planned. City fibre website says I'm on private land. Openreach website says they are planned for this year.

Fttc is third world and overpriced.

Stephen 20-02-2026 17:32

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

Realistically dial up would likely be classed as 3rd world. FTTC is hardly terrible.

thenry 20-02-2026 17:34

Re: Expand wireless signal from hotspot

How is getting more bandwidth on a smartphone than a dedicated broadband line costing more than the mobile data not third world. Massive inflation. Massive nonsense.
