Jeremy Corbyn starts a new party

For real. And in a taste of how right-on and radical things are about to get, eternal student activist Zarah Sultana MP has quit the Labour back benches to join him as co-leader.

Anyone care to predict what they’ll name this new party and how many seats it might pick up in 2029?

The socialist party? Zero
Real Labour and zero
The Knobhead party and 4

Re: Jeremy Corbyn starts a new party

Guido and various twitterers are now saying Corbyn didn’t agree to Sultana’s announcement and he hasn’t yet agreed to join the new party.

So that’s all off to a characteristically good start.

We really need to change Election Law so that if someone resigns from their Party after they have have been elected as a representative of that Party, a by-election should take place…

In Jezza's case he's not a member of any party, chucked out of the Labour party in 2024, and elected as an Independent at the last election. Otherwise I agree.

I don't think Sultana sits on the Labour back benches as she had the whip withdrawn from her.

I would guess it might be called something like the Socialist Labour Party. Seems like Corbyn is popular enough in his own constituency so I would guess they will one seat in 2029.

However the idea is you elect a person not a party. Still all ,well mostly all of that will change in Wales, vote for party, and they select whom get in. Not sure how that will work for any independent

Ah Chris come on now, you know the rules, we’re not allowed to call parties (formed yet or not) nasty names!

You can consider my invitation in the OP - to suggest a name for this nameless, shuffling horror - to be a gold-plated, mod-proof shield. :D

Has he not gone for ‘Independent Labour’? He’s a bit old in the tooth to come up with anything imaginative.

‘Faux Utopia’ might have been better.

It's been done.

The Fancy Dress Party was the best name for a political party I've seen.

"Muesli" was suggested in the paper because of "sultana and assorted nuts".

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Sultana leans heavily towards appeasing all muslims in the UK and abroad. Corbynistas aren't far behind in their thinking, but with a touch more communism of one flavour or another.

Party politics is going to have an ethnic bias appearing in some areas of the UK.

Damien 06-07-2025 19:58

Re: Jeremy Corbyn starts a new party

Sultana is a lot more liberal than some of those MPs elected as 'Gaza Independents', it's one of the areas to watch to see if there is tension.

It’s funny how quiet this has all gone. I’ve seen some chat on Tw*tter suggesting Corbyn was trying to stop Sultana announcing this when she did, and being pretty peeved that she went and did it anyway.

It's not just chat. The Sunday Times has leaked messages.

Corbyn didn't want the party to start yet, and didn't want there to be co-leaders.

The grouping called a vote anyway, Corbyn allies boycotted. The other faction then won the vote, and Sultana used that as a basis to issue the declaration of the party.

Corbyn allies then tried to get her to take it down.

Re: Jeremy Corbyn starts a new party

It really does play into the stereotype. It's the bizarre love of weaponising procedure to settle what are relatively minor disagreements rather than focusing on the greater cause. There is an episode of Fraiser in which the two lead characters argue over control of a wine club. At the end of the episode, they decide the club has forgotten about the wine and they'll start their own, only to start discussing with excitement the byzantine governance structure they want for it.

Besides, Corbyn is right on this occasion, co-leaders of a political party is nonsense.

Just as an aside, watching a Jeremy Bowen report on news at ten just now….what a vile biased excuse for a journalist he is. He’s an embarrassment to the BBC and should be taken off air.
