Ram question

I currently have a kit of corsair 6000mhz cl 30 ram.

If I wished to add more ram could I just buy the same kit again and would system accept that ok?

Thanks everyone.

Re: Ram question

A lot of systems are struggling with 4 sticks of Ram both intel and amd systems. I opted for a 48GB kit 2 sticks so I was in the middle and did not need to worry

I have 1 stick in my computer..... It looks like I can add 2 or 3 more I dunno.....

in 2024 your replies to questions like this are irrelevant

Go on the Crucial website and you should be able to look up what RAM you need and what is compatible with your motherboard.

That might seem like the answer but there are issues when running 4 sticks of ram across both Ryzen and Intel systems

Win98 max is 1 GB, but you may have some problems with DOS type programs if you install more than 512 MB.

I suspect you'd struggle to even buy a stick that small these days, suspect itg be a trip to eBay or somewhere similar to pick up something 25 years old.

I’ve probably got some in a drawer, somewhere… :D

Thank you Hugh for the info on the 1GB limit....

What happens if ya try to use more than 1GB??

As they used to say in the IBM iSeries manual when disk capacity was over 90%, "unpredictable results may occur"… ;)

How much have you got? If it's 32gb then that is more than enough for the next number of years. If it's 16gb, best bet would be to replace with a 32gb kit and sell the 16gb kit.

Newer DDR5 memory, epically with AM5 platform AMD cause doesn't play too well with 4 sticks so best sticking to a dual stick kit.

Intels XMP does not like it equally. Getting the full speed out of 4 sticks of DDR5 is proving hard across the board and often has to be manually clocked with XMP or Expo disabled

It is crazy. Especially that they haven't been able to rectify or make it work after all this time.

I was originally going to go for 32gb as 4 sticks last year but after seeing all the reviews and videos just settled on a dual kit at 6000 to be safe.

Re: Ram question

I bought 48GB 7200 DDR5 dual kit last year and it was vender specified over a year ago. I only run it at 6000 MT though but lower the latency

It's because the chips that will support it are used in the Xeon lines or Epyc Lines, they test all the cpu's and then fuse off what shouldn't be there for each line up.

My 7900X3D works fine with either 2 or 4 dimms at 6000mhz, but you clock it any higher, and it falls over.

I sent 2 sticks back as realistically I don't need 128Gb in my gaming pc, I only have 96Gb in my Unraid server and 96Gb in my Truenas server.

Both my Unraid and Truenas Servers have 24x 4Gb 1066Mhz ram with Intel Xeon CPU's, you try that with none Xeons and the memory controller falls over.
