Whats causing this dudes??
2 Attachment(s)
Im hoping someone might know what exactly is causing this......
On several of my main shell windows, the size of it goes to far to the right, look at my example here and see how the right side is too wide... The first time this happend I just deleted the shelliconcache but this time it didnt work.... Its been like this for about 3 years and im curious if someone might know?? This is Win98se in case ya dont realise........ Im just wondering if I could fix it somehow?? Some of my other menus are not the right size either..... Ill show one of my WMP menus also........ (Those are too wide (The text itself)) I feel terrible, this poor computer was abused by the people we got it from in 2001 (I think it was around there (I am just grateful 98se was on here (My favourite OS))) I have brought her back quite alot but she still is having some problems which I hope someone here may be able to help me with :) Muchos Gracious!! |
Re: Whats causing this dues??
play with the resolution settings. Are you sure it is optimal for the screen?
---------- Post added at 22:41 ---------- Previous post was at 22:39 ---------- you could perhaps try changing the font size to smaller ---------- Post added at 22:45 ---------- Previous post was at 22:41 ---------- There will likely be somewhere in the reg can expand the sizes but I have no idea where to even start looking You could perhaps run a search of the reg and search for in Find menuwidth ---------- Post added at 22:48 ---------- Previous post was at 22:45 ---------- |
Thank you Jay,I was thinking it may be something to do with resoution settings but wouldnt that affect every single menu??
Ill try changing it to 640x840 and back and see what happens,it may be jammed.... Thanx buddy! EDIT: Nope..... Ill try other stuff..... It was wierd,I changed it to 640x840 and it changed and asked me if I wanna keep the setting... I didnt click YES or NO and went to look at one of the menus.... After about 10 seconds it aborted and went back to 800x600 (I hadnt clicked no yet) Strange......... |
Re: Whats causing this dues??
Try making the font smaller. IIRC there were loads of settings for differnt fonts for different parts of the menus but it has been a long time
|
Thank you buddy......It just baffles me thats also.....
Like the file I have in my system directory..... Its 0 bytes .. I cant delete it,the file system doesnt see it.....I have tried everything I can think of........ The filename is: ________.__- If I goto DOS it of course is not there.......... |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??

Re: Whats causing this dudes??
Not sure about as far back as 98SE, but there might be settings for systems fonts and things like icon spacing. There may be apps still available for 98SE that allow you to change those and other settings (eg TweakUI).
|
Yes i have tweakUI..
I hate that whenever I open it,it adds itself to my startup entries!! (I have to keep going in and removing it) The file has been there since 2015 (28/9/15 to be exact) I dont remember what I might have been doing that might have created that file......... Computers are a mystery I tell ya...... |
After I Played a game last night it me$$ed up some of my settings.... And I tried booting up in SAFE MODE and all the problems are gone........
What does this mean?? I know safe mode bypasses startup files.......... How would I find out which fiile is causing the problems??? |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
edit your start up. Stop everything from running then add one by one
|
Da I suppose I could.....
After I booted up a few mins ago I checked how many files were accessed 10/12 and it said 263!! It might be hard finding :( EDIT: I used MSCONFIG and selected "Diagnostic startup" and when I rebooted it said VSHARE.VXD was missing.... I used SFC to extract it from the cab files...... And I put it in the VMM32 directory........ What the hell is this file for??? Nothing has changed........ I was gonna try SELECTIVE STARTUP and disable "Process WIN.INI" and see if the problems are gone....... EDIT2: I tried disabling WIN.INI from being read on boot but nothing has changed..... The computer seems to run fine w/o the data from WIN.INI so my question is why does it need that file?? (It runs OK w/o it) |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
Perhaps you should stop messing with the registry and other start up things if you don't know what half the files are or do.
I mean safe mode is pretty self explanatory. It disables everything apart from the bare minimum to get the system to boot in to windows. As for Win 98. I think it's time for a new PC:D my current PC will boot in to Win 11 from power on in about 20 seconds ready to use. Though that mainly down to how fast modern NVME SSDs are. 640x480 would literally hurt my eyes. My smart watch has a better resolution than that. As for the window and text, can't you widen or narrow the menu box by clicking and dragging? I know thats a thing now buts 26 years ago I can't remember. |
Nope the windows are fixed widths (The system menus)
Does anyone know of a system fixer I could run that might fix the error and fix it?? Something like HIJACKTHIS but not related to that...... I know its not that,a stupid emulation game I was playing did something.......... |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
Limitations of a near 30 year old OS. Can change more on newer Windows without having to hack the system to get it to do things. Possibly risking damage to the system dn it's stability.
|
Yes I see Stevie...
Its not easy keeping stuff we really like is it buddy? |

Like I said before IN SAFE MODE the display is correct........ Heres a picture......These are supposed to be 3 CHECK BOXS (The black boxs) and in safe mode they are! (uugghh) and the title bar text looks like it should also.... (MS Sans Serif (Western)) https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2025/02/1.png |

Re: Whats causing this dudes??
For the security aspect alone I would be installing a modern OS.

Re: Whats causing this dudes??
Let me guess you resurrected a 20 yr old thread?
We ain't mad, just flabbergasted at you still trying to use that as a main PC OS. |
Ya I guess Stevie, the last reply was in 2005 so...

Why do i think Dude is running this PC. :)
|
Hey Dues how are ya??
I wanted to tell you my computer fixed itself!!! I booted up and got an error (explorer (It didnt read the reg right (which it does alot))) and I rebooted... Then it restored a good registry..... When It re-booted,everything was fixed!!!!! (The Menu width, etc) I have no idea why it messed up in the first place or why it chose to correct itself when it restored this reg... This poor computer has been thru hell.. The place that had it before me didnt take care of it well and it had even more problems...... Memory issues,etc..... I cant say how long it will stay fixed because I have no idea what happend to fix it,etc...... |

The only thing I can think SNOOP is earlier today I deleted TTFCACHE .. Could that have fixed it buddy??
The file has been since re-created but CACHE FILES can cause problems...... I was gonna mark SHELLICONCACHE and TTFCACHE 'read only' so they cant be changed..... Would that work??? Computers are a mystery!! |
I have another question Guys..
I have had a 0byte file in my system directory since 28/9/15 I have no idea what created this... I cant delete it.. If I goto DOS it doesnt exist! I dont wanna me$$ anything up but does anyone know how to delete such a file? https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2026/01/1.png |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
As you have previously been advised;
Stop messing with your system and just ignore it, its not doing any harm. |
Paul I have someone helping me like crazy on EMD.... I saw a thread titled "Computer questions" with a last reply in 2002 so I added my reply and its amazing mate!!
I told him the file isnt listed in DOS and he said it must be,probably as a different name....... So I went to the system directory and did this in DOS dir /A:H > C:\www.txt Thats listed HIDDEN files in that folder and 1 of them is the 0k!! ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ ÿÿ- Thats the filename in DOS!! I cant delete it... I tried putting in del ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ* and it says file not found.. I tried the whole name and it says too many Parameters...... This guy is amazingly smart,I cant believe it Paul!! Here is the thread if ya wanna see it :) www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=7036 Now we just gotta figure out how to delete this!!! |
File deleted!!
I was in system directory and I typed this
deltree *.* /p The /p listed every file and asked if I wanted to delete it.. I pressed N until I got to that file!! Thank you Jeremy!! |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
Stop deleting files that you don't know what they are for.

I'm sick of his nonsense. He's annoying the hell out me and I can't understand why he keeps posting his pointless questions and comments that he never seems take to heart. I think he's a trouble maker for the sake of it.

Im sorry Maggy,I am not a trouble maker!!
I have wanted to correct this error for years and didnt know how... Whats wrong with someone helping me?? Why are you being so mean to me?? If you had a file like this you would want it gone also!! (You wouldnt want your computer having things wrong) Please dont look at me badly ok?? I just wanna keep my computer running good! |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
If you want it to run well. Stop deleting system files when you don't know what they do. they are there for a reason.
|

Just to counter what you said. I personally do not scour the system files I just leave them well alone. They are regularly virus scanned and secure however you can no say that as you do not even use an AV unless you do now ? |

Thw filename was "_______.__-" and it was 0k!! That was not a valid file!! |
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
I bet nothing at all actually changed. Running better as a placebo. It probably was a system file of some sort. It wouldn't have been there all that time for no reason.
|
Re: Whats causing this dudes??
The point is not to go deleting files when you are not sure what they are, and they are not doing any harm.
Its not necessary, but a sure way to eventually delete something important. There is no need for a continued argument about it. Topic Closed. |
