The email issues are the perfect example of why you should never use your ISP's email service (if they offer one) always go with a 3rd party such as G-mail or Outlook it's also easier when you change ISP's as you don't have to faff about changing your email address with sites

Absolutely but people are scared of change I guess, in the end they may regret not putting their main stuff on outlook or Gmail.

Agreed. I'm lucky though. My first ISP ever was BT Internet. Even though I haven't been with them for over 20 years I have kept my old email address because BT allow old customers to use their email servers for just over £4.00 a month. We kept our addresses because as one of BT's first ever customers our email addresses are really simple with just our names and no numbers. We have Gmail and Outlook addresses too.

Re: Internet down

Several email addresses/providers are ideal. One for important stuff that you rarely give out, another to give those you know will send junk, one for everyday use and a spare one in case needed. Still have ntlworld one, but wouldn't depend on it.

You can set up auto forwarding to another email address

Go to the cog wheel, click email on the left then the auto forward tab in the middle, enable it then just type in your new email address and hit apply.

As a back-up you can tick keep a copy of the message this will keep it in your VM email inbox when it forwards

Thank You very helpful, I've set it up but doesn't seem to forward yet unless it's just slow.

Might be Gmail blocking the forward, not got time to figure away around that.

An official statement from Virgin Media

Quote:

What has happened?

Due to a technical issue, Virgin Media email services were disrupted for most of the day on 19 June. We want to sincerely apologise for the frustration and inconvenience this may have caused you.

While our teams have been able to fully restore most email services, work is still underway to completely resolve the issue for some accounts.

What does this mean for me?

You are now able to send and receive emails as you normally would. However, you will have noticed that any emails received on or before 19 June will not be appearing in your inbox, sent items or any other folders.

We want to reassure you that your emails and data are safe and secure; there is currently nothing to suggest your account has been compromised; and that all emails will be fully restored once the relevant system repair has been completed. Any emails sent to you on 19 June when this problem occurred, but not received, will also be delivered to your inbox once this issue has been fully fixed.

For any urgent emails you are waiting to receive, we suggest that you contact the original senders while we move all your backed up data to your mailbox.

What are you doing to fix this?

Our focus now is on working around the clock to ensure your emails are restored as quickly as possible. You do not need to take any further action and we will provide further updates as soon as we can. If you do need further assistance then our customer service teams are on hand to help wherever they can.

We appreciate your patience and understanding.

In Gmail click the cog wheel top right, go to see all settings, select the forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, ensure POP and IMAP are both enabled

Just a side note once set up and enabled it will not forward old emails only new ones will be sent, and it would be best to check gmails spam folders just incase

They never actually say what the 'technical issue' was with these outages, and how they rectified it, and how they will prevent it from happening again.

Either they think we're to dim to understand, or they have some vulnerability they don't want the world to know about, or they don't know and just switched something off and on again as is traditional !

Different to the previous outage where the servers were accessible but wouldn't authenticate user and password.

This week I have had 2 emails one about an @ntlworld email account and one about an @virginmedia account.

Many years ago I phoned to get help because I was no longer getting any emails to,or from, the above mentioned @NTL account and was informed that the account had never existed. The agent did 'help' me set up a @Virginmedia account which worked for a while then that stopped as well.

I tried to sort it out yet again but as I have an adversion to being treated as an idiot I ended up inserting my google email into my account and have ever since got my bills with depressing regularity.

Further to my update earlier in the week, I wanted to let you know that our teams are still working to fully restore your historic emails. Unfortunately, confirming a specific resolution date is taking longer than expected, but we will be in touch again early next week to provide further information and a timeframe.

I'd like to apologise again for this disruption.

Kind regards,

A cynic might think they're not throwing the kitchen sink at the problem. New customers apparently are no longer offered email facilities and there is talk of them discontinuing the service completely in a year or two. Email it seems is right at the bottom of their priorities and they have some disclaimers buried in their T's and C's basically saying you should back up your emails as we (VM) are not responsible for their safety. I think the people talking about compensation for lost important correspondence might be in for a shock.

A cynic might think they pay enough each month for a reliable BB, a decent email service and a kitchen sink ! Longstanding customers are VMs most profitable. With fibre speeds now competitive they need to up their game, and not lower service/standards. VM used to be reliable for BB, they are now increasingly flaky. Reliability beats, silly headline speeds, that no one actually needs.

Agreed. I just wish City Fibre would show up but there's little chance any time soon with Openreach and VM already having their feet in the door.

it's broken big time. Personally I'm not touching it until there is word that they have sorted it out, assuming they ever do. Also see SnoopZ advice, there are loads of other email providers not tied to a particular ISP.
