Re: Nottingham incident: 3 Dead, 3 Injured

Apparently overnight a guy stabbed 2 people to death in Ilkeston Road (just near the university campus) then walked off into the city, stole a van, and ran over 2 people in the city centre near the Victoria Centre, then was arrested with the van by the forest recreation where the goose fair usually is to the north of the city centre. A third person was found dead in Mapperley Park, about 5-10mins drive from where the van was found, but it's not clear how that fits together chronologically.

1 person has been arrested, who they think was behind all three attacks, but that's about all which is known so far, it's not thought to be terrorism though counter-terrorism officers have been involved (I guess part of their role is to be clear of that fact). Does sound like either targeted violence or someone particularly unhinged for some reason decided to cause some harm, to me, as opposed to actually terrorism.

Well it all seems odd doesn’t it. Counter terror police involved. Odd time to carry out such an attack at 4am.

Drugs related or terrorism imo but time will tell

Another eyewitness said he saw a young man and young woman stabbed in Ilkeston Road at about 04:00 BST.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he looked out of the window and saw a "guy dressed all in black with a hood and rucksack grappling with some people. It was a girl, and a man or boy she was with - they looked quite young.
I suppose things will become clearer, when the motive for what sounds like initially a disagreement, comes out.

I have never heard of National inter-agency liaison officers who were deployed this morning so I did a google.

Wearing burgundy uniforms to ensure they stand out from other emergency service staff and everyone knows what each other’s role is in any major incident they act as tactical advisers.

The following link explains their history and explains how NILO officers are chosen and where they are deployed.

Reports are saying two students from nearby university stabbed to death. In another road a man in his 60’s found dead.

Nottingham University has cancelled Student Ball planned for tonight.

Rumours were it was local drug gangs.
I'm not sure how that fits in with the students.
No doubt it will become clearer over time.

Well, it's possible the students were known to the drug gangs, I would expect a fair amount of students do still take drugs, and that would involve them with drug gangs... but I'm not so sure here.

I would have thought these two were just coming back from a night out, and in the wrong place at the wrong time, or maybe encountered them in the street and said something out of turn, who knows.

Seems to be an immigrant, illegal, asylum whatever, not sure yet.

Attacks two young students and kills them with a knife, kills a man in his 50’s and takes his van, then uses the van to mow down three others.

As far as I can ascertain.

But, you know, diversity, welcoming etc etc.

Sorry that's just speculation based on the ethnicity of the guy.

He may have been born here for all we know.

Several sources have stated that he is a West African immigrant.

Sources said the suspect was a West African migrant who had settled in the UK legally and was known to police. It is not yet known what sparked the rampage and sources said that while the suspect did not have a criminal record, he was known to police and also had a history of mental health problems.

The fact that terrorism was even considered is a very big clue. If the attacker had been white, then the question would never have been asked.

So what alternative would've been "better" or even likely?

I think the CTP were involved as a SOP do to the type of attack, In guess it better to have them on scene ASAP, but then stood down if required, which I believe is now the case.

They're still there, but not running it.

Reporting from the scene, the BBC's Daniel Sandford says he understands the suspect has a history of mental health issues.
That is why at this stage, while counter-terrorism police are assisting the investigation, they are not running it, he adds.
