Help for a long ago member
1 Attachment(s)
Hello all.
I used to be a moderator on CF long ago when it was NTL. I finally got fed up of waiting for openreach (who I used to work for) to get a fibre node FTTP or even FTTDP. I have been paying £80 odd for years for an 80/20 service with 5 IP's and RDNS. So I have taken the plunge and gone for the 1Gig VOOM business service with 5 IP's and reverse DNS. So everything I got before but faster (hopefully) and for less for six months. Even after that it will be cheaper. I had the engineer in today to do the fit, he spent an hour talking to someone at virgin as he could not get his head round the 5IP setup. He was trying to set the modem up and attempting to set the default gateway up. He left with it kind of working but 30 minutes later the modem/router seemed to go into some form of update mode with the U/S and D/S led's blinking then staying blue. After this I had nothing and discovered the router had factory defaulted (firmware update maybe)...... So I managed to log in and also to confirm the router is a Hitron Chita. Its the model with two VOIP ports. The usb and reset button appear to be in different places compared to the image on the VM site but its close enough. My problem is thus.... According to the online guide I should log in and set my IP range and subnet for the lan despite the fact I will be using it in bridge/modem mode passed direct to a decent Sophos firewall. The guide is suggesting I should set up the local ip range as described above but then asks you to configure a GRE username and password. After an hour on the phone I managed to get the credentials despite being told the GRE username and password was for engineer use only. I do recall from way back that NTL/CABLETEL used to assign a dynamic IP and then put a mac to ip reservation in it. I managed to get the IP range from them and they have me the 7 ip block telling me I got an extra two free ip's for some reason and they would not get the fact that the first and last IP of the 7 are for broadcast and network use leaving me with the 5. Anyway I now have all the correct credentials I am sure its just a case of configuring the modem and what should and should not be done... Oh how I miss my PPPOE already. I am hoping someone in the know or on the same package can just double check some details with me. I will post the log data for the connection bellow. I also noticed a 6DB attenuator has been put inline with the modem. I am sure someone will be able to tell me if that should be fitted. I have attached the logs and data I expect you will need to spot any issues...... N.B. I have just performed a full factory reset so the data may only be of use with spotting power level's and SNR ect. Thank you very much for your time and attention reading all this. Stuart P.S. Feels nice to be back :) |
Re: Help for a long ago member
If they put an attenuator on a new install, it's safe to say you need it. I can't help with the IP configuration.
Welcome back! |
Re: Help for a long ago member

Re: Help for a long ago member
Update on this situation. The very most I can hit is 80-100 Mbps and upload maxes out in the lower 40's. So currently not even getting 10% and im only getting 20% of the guaranteed 500 Mbps down.
I must have a config problem somewhere. Have even tested on an Android phone with a USB C Gigabit to ethernet adaptor. Hmmmmm Any ideas ? |
Re: Help for a long ago member
I have the 1 Gig business service with 5 static IP addresses, and get upwards of 850-920 Mb/s down and around 99 Mb/s up.
Sounds like you got the static IP ranges configured? I gues syou also foudnout you can't access the Chita via 192.168.0.1 but have to use the static IP address you selected for it? I'll help all I can as our setup sounds similar. |

Why hello there! |
Re: Help for a long ago member
Thanks everyone for the lovely welcome back. A LOT !!! has happened to me since I last haunted the hallowed hallways of this forum.
As soon as I have sorted out this issue I will post an update and fill you all in. Something is definitely banana shaped as this is my current speed on 1Gbps voom business connection...... https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speed...92616307607355 |
Re: Help for a long ago member
Hmmmmm
Just spoken to business faults who "tested" the service and came back with a no fault found. The test duration was about 4 seconds. I also asked them to test the speed via the SamKnows client that I was told by the engineer is on everyone's modem. Apparently its not on my Modem ! They are basically telling me that nothing is wrong with my connection but they are passing my "fault" up to 2nd line support. I had this service installed on the 12th of January 2023 AM and so far I haven't been able to use it. I have set my DNS time values to 24 Hours but I cant change my DNS until I know all is well and stable + my reverse DNS entries are on Virgins servers, despite a technical advisor telling me that all my DNS servers are on the modem. I had to email them explaining what RDNS was. I was then told its not needed. I am sure anyone that uses exchange can understand that my emails are going to go direct to everyone's spam folder without a reverse lookup. Is it possible that any of the kind Virgin staff that frequent these hallowed halls could insert some rockets or feet where needed and get something done. I am on the most expensive package with Virgin and I am unable to drop my old VDSL supplier until Virgin works so my lovely plan to save money has increased what I am paying by over double  I have checked and my modem setup is identical to another member on the forum who has an identical package. I have likely worn out the reset button on the router + I have checked my settings many times and tested with three different devices. Anyone able to help me please. Many thanks Stuart |

Re: Help for a long ago member
I offrred a bit of help to the original poster, as I also have a VM Business 1 Gb/s connection, which for me is working perfectly.
What I did notice is the OP had Hitron firmware that was out of date. While I am not sure if that was the cause it shoudln't be different. For ref my Hitron Chita formware is: Hardware Version 1A Software Version 7.2.4.7.7b1-CD Maybe worth checking yours to see if they match. |
