Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
I remember a sales guy knocking on our door while the cables were being laid outside. The sales guy suggested we had the ntl box in our bedroom as we had Sky in the lounge. It was 1997 because we had it when Diana died as I remember turning on the TV to see channels showing messages to turn to news channels.
Had cable ever since, when ntl:home digital launched in Teesside I signed up and ditched Sky, would that of been around 2001? |

1995 - Jones Cable Leeds

We were about that (United Artists) for cable. I can’t be too far from MB - digital was Telewest here too after the market consolidation. |
Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
Our area was analogue first with the Jerrold impulse box. We were converted later to digital with the Pace 4000 STB which bought in the 256K "Broadband" Cant swear to the the dates though but must have been in the early 20's

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
1995 - though it would have been analogue. The workmen were petrified as Mrs K was heavily pregnant at the time. They installed the best reinforced boarding over the trench at the bottom of the drive. The neighbours had to jump over their gap, haha !

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
We had Cable and Wireless installed on 7th April 1997 only a coule of weeks or so after the cable was laid.
I still have the original contract and according to my pencil note they came to install it on the date, and at the time, I was given. :) |
Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
We had Telewest installed in March 1997, so almost 26 years now and still have carbon copies of the original order form.

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
We had C&W in Leeds, all analogue equipment!
Had offices/headend at Seacroft, imagine having to pay to phone to report problems. |
Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
About 1995 in Liverpool area with analogue Cable Northwest (then part of Southern Bell I think), then switched Sky Digital in 1998 when that launched then back to cable (Telewest Digital by then) around 2004. Moved to new area with Sky Digital/Plus again in 2005 and then finally back to my local area with digital cable Virgin V6 since launch in 2016. Will never be going back to Sky, so will remain with Virgin at least until this contract runs out and re-negotiate for a good deal at that time. Failing that, I will switch to OTT streaming apps and Freeview play with Firestick and Roku.

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
I couldn't remember they year when we first had it installed but NTL Teesside was formed in 1993 and as far as I can recall we had it installed straightaway. We had Rediffusion via cable prior to NTL
https://www.europages.co.uk/NTL-TEES...136-00101.html In 1997, Middlesbrough FC became the first football club in the world to launch its own TV channel - Boro TV and it was exclusive to NTL |
Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
Mid 1999, Diamond Cable, who changed to NTL shortly after, my phone sockets are still stamped with the Diamond Cable logo.

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
Jones cable in 1994 or 95 for analogue, can't remember exactly when we went digital, a year or 2 pre-millenium I suspect.

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
1993/4 for analogue - not sure exactly when but it was "United Artists" cable in Edinburgh which became Telewest shortly afterwards.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dOWSJ1Ipvg Video is for UA in Tyneside but the same/similar one was used in Edinburgh IIRC (it was put through the letterbox on a VHS tape!!) Digital arrived in 1999 and I had one of the Pace boxes that were first used on the digital service. https://settopbox.org/cable/telewest/telewest-active-digital/receivers/pace/pace-di2000t/ |

1995 saw cable start to appear in York. By then it was Bell Cablemedia. Leeds was the main hub for the franchise which also included Harrogate as well as York, and I presume it was also 1995 for harrogate. ---------- Post added at 16:49 ---------- Previous post was at 16:48 ---------- Quote:
Digital television didn't begin until autumn 1998 and it wasn't until at elast mid-1999 that digital first became available for cable subscribers. |

Re: When did your area first get digital cable?
About 25 years ago in 1998 I subscribed to Cable London in Haringey and was one of the first to migrate to digital (in the following year I think but not sure exactly when) and got the replacement STB. Rather oddly Telewest, which took complete control of Cable London in 1999, continued to offer analogue in its Cable London franchises until November 2009.
