Filming moved to Ireland for season two and various strikes caused delays . These shows do take time to make and then dubbed and subtitled etc. The streaming world!

Even allowing for the writers strike, Netflix’s commissioning and scheduling process is notoriously Kafkaesque. It’s taken them more than 9 years to get 5 seasons of Stranger Things in the bag, and that’s one of their biggest, most recognisable hits. 3 years just to get here from the release of the last season.

Broadcast channels would previously churn out almost 25 episodes of FX-heavy shows like Stargate or Star Trek and their spin-offs every year, year after year, for a decade at a time.

Aye and half of those episodes were fillers. We'll not start on FX standards...

That doesn’t make the point you think you’re making. :dozey:

They managed to produce maybe a dozen quality episodes, half a dozen meh episodes, and then another half dozen fillers, plus a clip show, every year.

Your average top-rated Netflix show manages a dozen, at most, once every 2-3 years.

Wednesday Addams has lost her "edge" at least for me. Same as Voight in Chicago PD:erm:

I dont watch Chicago PD so I cant comment on that.
The trouble with Wednesday is the first season set expectations that will be very difficult to match again.
I am enjoying it, but I agree it doesnt quite seem as good as Season 1, at least not yet. Its an issue many shows have.

Re: Wednesday

They need a little more comedy and a little less horror. A brain-eating zombie is a bit obvious and not very funny no matter how you do it. And for some reason they’ve written Pugsley as a complete imbecile.

As always, Uncle Fester elevates everything when he finally shows up.

Re: Wednesday

Heads (or brains) kept alive in jars is an ancient trope of the horror b-movie genre. Matt Groening didn’t invent it, either for the Simpsons or Futurama.

I see futurama was March 28th 1999. When was it in The Simpsons. Of cause both by the same guy

Chris 15-08-2025 18:03

Re: Wednesday

It was first done in a 1925 novel called The Heads of Cerberus.

https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2025/08/2.jpg

The earliest clear example on film is The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (Also sometimes seen as The Head That Wouldn’t Die). This was produced in 1959 but not released until 1962, with an erroneous copyright notice that meant it was effectively in the public domain from day 1 - which is possibly why the idea of a living brain kept alive in a jar has become so oft-repeated.

21 October 1993, Season 5 Episode 4.

Yep, as noted, both are Matt Groening series.

From what I remeber of the classic show and the 90s movies wasn't Pugsley also a bit simple/stupid?

At least there new writers are being consistent

I've only watched the first episode so far. Didn't grab my attention like season 1 did.
