Slightly increasing speeds (making diddly squat practical difference to most), to be followed by massively increasing price no doubt ! I know VM and their ways ;)

Synthetic 18-10-2022 09:45

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

Ah yes there'll be a price increase as well I bet :)

For the extra 25Mbps/50Mbps increase I would say it's pretty pointless.

5 meg upload extra on the 200 would definitely benefit me

Synthetic 18-10-2022 11:34

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

I'd be very surprised / happy if we went 10:1 on 1Gig, although i can't see it.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if only 100/200 get the boost, adding 5Meg to 1gig is a bit disappointing!

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

Just reset my Hub and the speed increase has been implemented.
M100 now provisioned at 143.7mb downstream and 22mb upstream - so upload speed has been doubled.

I know this may sound like an odd question seeing that I've done 1000s of broadband installs over the years but age is starting to affect me now...

When turning off your separate modem and routers what order should they be turned off in? Modem, or router first for example and then when turning back on the same question.

Thanks all.

Jaymoss 19-10-2022 21:29

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

Turning off I do not think matters. I have always turned the modem on first so it assigns its IP then the router after.

Thanks all.

The order of turning them off makes no difference, however turning them on is:

1: Modem and let it fully initiate and then
2. router.

Yep, its irrelevant what order you turn them off, but ideally you would turn on your modem first, let it connect, then boot up your router.

Reboot your modem guys, after a reboot I have the speed increase.

Config showing:
Downstream
287500061 bps

Upstream

Downstream 283Mbps
Upstream 27Mbps

I remember the old days when a free speed increase was like a doubling of up and down, I guess it's got to the point where it is often fast enough now apart from people who want more upload.

1gig connection never got 10:1 and really should be getting 96 to 100 meg instead of 47 to 50 meg, I hope they boost the upload since hub 4 is only capable of 960 to 980 meg so they can't boost download speeds, ideall give us the 10:1 ratio it should be plus extra but I doubt it

Top Tier customers will no doubt get a kick to the balls again, remember the normal double even triple upgrades (for 20Mb/ tier to 60Mb/s) and we got 100>120 then 120>152 then 152 to 200 etc.

They should make the upload 100Mb/s to get back on 10/1 from long ago.

Download a file and try and get full speed and see just how much of your 50Mb/s Upload Bandwidth it takes to download at that speed, VM were cutting it fine.

It would be helpful if you provided your upstream max traffic rate profile.

I'd like to, but unfortunately, on the hub used for business services, there is no way to see the configured max traffic rates.

This is the case on the new Hitron Chita as well as the Hitron CGNV4

Glad I left VM then. I was on their top tier, but 50Mb upstream is not sufficient for running my free Plex server. Four clients take up >50Mb. I moved to Vodafone/CityFibre and currently enjoy a nice symmetrical 900Mb+, for less than I paid VM for the broadband element. Lower ping too, 5-7ms.

Haven't seen any boost to my 'Volt' 500meg package, but a few neighbours and friends have been seeing boosts to their lower 100/200 packages - I can only assume the higher tiers are left out, at least for the timebeing(?)

I imagine that there'd be some stress on the network if they start bumping upstreams too exessively, perhaps the reason for the above...

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

Have a feeling they'll want most if not all of the network on 5x 3.0 1x 3.1 upstream before they boost the higher tiers upstream, unless they're able to release it to gig1 customers only in upgraded areas, don't think they can / will do that though.

You will see that on the Upstream Tab it'll be separated, so you may have 5 3.0 Bonded upstreams and 1 3.1 Bonded.

Didnt VM have massive issues when working from home started due to congested upstreams? Might be best to use the new docsis 3.1 channel purely for congestion relief?

That's because you don't have any 3.1 bonded channels, mine looks the same as I only have 5 3.0 bonded.

Whilst the ratio is low I dont see it like that.

I had a choice between paying £34 for M350, £38 for M500 or £41 for Gig1, so on those prices M350 and M500 are much worse value than Gig1. When I quoted known retention prices to the call operator it was a baffled "those prices dont exist". :) But I got a nice surprise when I asked how much Gig1 was, was expecting her to say £64.

PC ethernet wired from primary mesh unit about 5cm from the hub & mobile phone

I have rebooted all devices again, hub, mesh, pc, phone and re-optimised wi-fi on the mesh.

Talking to a VM sales rep today in my city centre it appears that VM is definitely planning a 2.5GB service. I asked if it would have an upspeed to go with it, e.g. 10:1. He wasn't able to say.

He was trying to sell me VM's current products, but when I told him I was on a nice symmetrical 900Mb with Vodafone/CityFibre, he suggested I watch out for the new product.

I guess VM will be selling it only to those who need high bandwidth on multiple devices simultaneously, given that most people's device network cards and switches max at 1Gb.

OK so I unplugged the ethernet for the mesh primary, plugged in the ethernet for PC - and instant offline.

Plugged the mesh back in, and online again, same LAN port on the hub, so that's weird.

Edit

I'm in modem mode/wi-fi off, yet I can connect to the hub using http://192.168.0.1, pretty sure in modem mode it's meant to be 192.168.100.1

techguyone 03-11-2022 21:27

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

The thought occurred to me that perhaps the mesh had reached it's capability limit but it seems the TP-Link M5 can handle a fair bit more.

Each Deco unit is powered by a quad-core processor and contains four high-power internal antennas. The router is an AC1300 device capable of speeds of up to 400Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 867Mbps on the 5GHz band.

Still a bit baffled that the hub4 ethernet port that works with the mesh isn't letting the PC connect directly to it, or the fact it's in modem mode but doesn't require a web browser to use 192.168.100.1 to connect to the settings.

Yes before was just 4x QAM64, also you likely have a 3.1 DOCISIS upstream as well (not visible on hub5, and wont be used on hub 3 or older).

So there is no way of finding out if I have a 3.1 upstream on my Hub5 or does something show up in the network log?

Its in the network log, will be along the lines of US profile assignment change.

Happy with this (especially since I downgraded to the 100Mb package, which then got doubled with Volt Boost).

Your speed tests are obviously derived from the square root of a negative number…

So, maybe a pinch of salt needed, but I really hope not!!
Today I dealt with retentions and after accepting a new 18 month contract at £40 for the gig connected got started talking "off the record" about the upload speeds and I was told that within the next 2-3 months the gig customers will be getting the same 100mbps upload boost that the business customers now get as a standard.

Here's to hoping!!

I had 1gb and telephone but dropped the telephone as it was £1 cheaper without it and I've never had it plugged in anyway.
I was leaving though and had already decided on a new supplier so they had to work hard to keep me.

I am many others (VM Forum and Reddit) got the increase today and some were getting it here and there the past months (dependant on area).

Apparently RFoG customers will not be able to get it.

Just rebooted, still 55mbit.

Someone on reddit claims the official date is 1st June which would in theory mean everyone has it by then, will see.

Upload speed has been increased to 100MB in Keighley area BD213

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

mine updated 2 days ago and had been slower with a 110 config than it was with the 55 :S

Chrysalis 20-05-2023 16:26

Re: Virgin Boosting Speeds

Apparently some areas wont get it for "capacity reasons", be interesting if such areas have the same listing price for gig1 as the 110mbit areas.

I am not going to check daily, but will check again end of month and report back here if it still hasnt upgraded.
