A year after CNN was removed from Virgin Media, I was wondering what people think might be the chances of CNN returning to the VM platform.

Can't see that changing but CNN's owners have merged with Discovery so its distribution methods might broaden in the future - perhaps being available on Discovery +.

Who cares about CNN anyway??

I dont think there is anything reliable reported there,they are a mainstream entity FROM THE STATES which in my opinion makes them not worthy!!

I think TimeWarner shot themselves in the foot when they changed CNN's European distribution. Hopefully the new owners will see sense and return it to our screens.
Until then, NBC News Now (channel 614) is a decent substitute if you want US news.

I don't think that VM would have launched NBC News Now if CNN had remained on the platform.

The main version in the US is NBC News Now. NBC News itself is lots of regional versions.

Their main rolling news channel was MSNBC but it became more orientated towards political discussion rather than a news channel which i assume os why NBC News Now launched which then expanded to the UK.

I think NBC News Now and CNN would compliment each other very well with NBC News Now being rolling news, albeit only on weekdays, with CNN which mixes international news bulletins with CNN USA which is mostly devoted to news and discussion of US politics.

It's pretty easy to stream CNN to any TV with chromecast, as Rakuten picked it up for its free live tv service and you can stream it from their site.

It's not actually listed as a channel for some reason, but if you go here you can watch or cast it.

CNN didn't leave satellite when it was removed from Virgin. It's still on Sky and Freesat/generic receivers can receive it too as it's FTA.

No doubt they thought that viewers would be attracted to subscribe to their, short lived, streaming app. Burning a few bridges and their income stream from Virgin in the process. FTA satellite was possibly retained to make sure that CNN remained available in hotel rooms. Negotiations for the return of a relatively minor channel may not be as easy as pulling the plug.

The Warner/Discovery merger messed everything up. HBO programming gutted, Cartoon Network dead, CNN+ unexpectedly getting the axe under new management etc. It's a victim of a larger problem at the top.

It depends on the contract. In theory, there are 2 elements, carriage costs (payable by the broadcaster) and revenue share (the share of subscription income paid to the broadcaster by Virgin & dependant on the subscription tier). These can be offset in the contract so that there is only a payment in one direction. I wouldn't like to guess at whether cash moved from CNN to Virgin or vice versa, as I said, it would depend on the terms of the contract.

Last Discovery deal was signed in 2019 when some channels moves EPG numbers in September/October 1st 2019 (I post this info under Spolier to save the size of this post):

Last Warner Media new channel deal was signed in 2012 when than called TCM HD, TCM2 and Cartoon Network HD did launch on Virgin in January 2013.

At time of posting Virgin are missing a following Warner Bros. Discovery own channels:

*Boomerang HD
*Cartoonito HD - Channel broadcast on all non Sky Q brands.
*CNN International
*CNN International HD
*Discovery Turbo +1
*Food Network +1

Anything is possible but we don't know the actual reason why CNN+ was shuttered and what plans the merged entity has to include it in their packages. WBD, on the whole, gives the impression of a boat without a rudder at the moment.

As for the HD versions of the kids channels landing on Virgin, I've already said on another forum that viewers would probably be better ditching the kids pack and using the money saved to fund one of the many reduced price NOW subscriptions that forum members keep mentioning. With NOW the kids channels are thrown in with the entertainment pack and with BOOST (again, discounts are available) are in HD. And with Sky Atlantic and Peacock thrown in as a bonus. ;)
