Liz Truss Resigns [Who'll be the next Prime Minister?]

New PM, new thread…… ;)

Re: New Prime Minister: TBC

Given the new prime minister is going to be announced within the hour the latest polling suggest the likely prime minister Liz Truss is not very popular with voters.

Quote:

Survation has released some new polling this morning suggesting that Labour has a 10-point lead over the Conservatives – but that if respondents are told Keir Starmer is the Labour leader, and Liz Truss the Tory leader, the Labour lead rises to 17 points.

Quote:

NEW Westminster Voting Intention:
CON 33% (+3)
LAB 43% (-1)
LD 11% (+1)
SNP 4% (-1)
GRE 3% (nc)
Others 5% (-1)
*Changes are in comparison to Survation polling July 8th 2022

Quote:

NEW Westminster Voting Intention, named party leaders including Liz Truss. Change vs today's standard voting intention. LAB lead of 17 points:
CON 29% (-5) change was -4.5, rounds to 5
LAB 46% (+3)
LD 11% (nc)
SNP 4% (nc)
GRE 3% (nc)
OTH 7% (+2):

Agreed.

She inherits a 70+ majority from Johnson so not the end of the world in the short-term but the 2025 election and a potential recession loom large.

Immediate question is her generosity to business and consumers for fuel support. If she adopts the LibDem suggestion of freezing the cap at today's prices I would expect her popularity to rise significantly.

As would government borrowing.

Some Conservative MPs just can't let go of their beloved Johnson!

Expected future Cabinet members in front row

Reporting from QEII Centre, London

Taking front row seats here include some of the people expected to be in Liz Truss's future cabinet if she is announced the winner.

Kwasi Kwarteng, expected to be the next chancellor, and James Cleverley, expected to be the next foreign secretary. But there’s some mingling between the two camps too.

The current chancellor and Truss-backer Nadhim Zahawi is sat next to, and laughing with, the current deputy PM Dominic Raab.

He's a prominent Sunak supporter and it’s not currently expected he’ll have a job in the cabinet by tomorrow.

There are far better candidates imho then Liz Truss out there.

Agreed. Liz Truss will be defined by her actions. She has a huge agenda, and if people can see that she’s getting on with it, her popularity will sky rocket.

Many members of the public still don’t know much about her.

The left would far rather have a seriously weak leader of the Conservative Party because that’s the only way they can think of to persuade people to vote for them.

I can assure you she will be anything but week. Roll on, PM’s Question Time on Wednesday!

We are not talking about the left as we are talking about the new Conservative party leader and new prime minister of this country.

“I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy,” she said in a speech after winning the leadership race on Monday.

However, according to economic research organization the Institute for Fiscal Studies, Truss’s proposed tax cuts will “primarily benefit higher-income households.”
Quote:

“To look at everything through the lens of redistribution I believe is wrong because what I’m about is growing the economy and growing the economy benefits everybody,” she said, arguing that “it is fair” to give higher earners more money back via tax cuts than those with smaller incomes.

She did mention tax cuts in her speech as well although not defined them yet. But I would be shocked if everything that has been mentioned was cut, the rising of the 40% threshold, the NI tax cut, the VAT tax cut as well as freezing energy prices. That's a huge amount to borrow.

There is no piggy bank. The country's been in debt ever since William III's time and is getting close to GDP although it has been far worse in the last century.

More poor polling figures for the new prime minister Liz Truss.

Asked in the immediate aftermath of the result, 50% of Britons say they are disappointed that she is to be the next prime minister, including a third (33%) who are ‘very disappointed’. This is considerably more than the 22% who say they are very or fairly pleased.

Holding another election when you have a minority is not uncommon either, Labour did it after just 8 months in 1974.

I think anything short of a year's cap at today's prices won't land particularly well. A year's cap would help get a sceptical British public more behind Truss.

They are frozen to the new cap till January anyway hahaha

If it is as current prices the £400 in my case anyway will be pushed back into hands of Octopus as a larger buffer. I might keep £100 of it but the rest is going back. I was hoping any freeze would last a little longer. IE October Cap price till then end of 2023 at least. Just giving 3 months is not going to ease any anxiety imo
