Would you go and live on the moon?

If you were given the opportunity to become a test group of people to start living life on the moon, would you go ahead and board the rocket?

I have always wondered why they havent built a massive glass tank and then started taking plants up there and creating a new eco system.

So, would you be willing to go?

Can you see yourself living on another planet some day?

I would go, though It would probably just be my ashes at this stage. At least I could feel that I had been useful even if it was only to bulk up the growing medium that would be needed to a grow something useful. :)

As a young, fit and single man, I would have gone in a flash. These days I have responsibilities. I’d go as a tourist, once it’s reasonably safe, but my pioneering days are long past!

Because it’s very expensive and also difficult, as this recent experiment shows:

No, because we won’t be living on other planets in my lifetime. That’s not to say there won’t be outposts on the moon and Mars within the next 20 years; I think there will be. But they will be living there only in the same sense anyone lives in Antarctica. Strictly for research and by appointment only. Properly living on other planets entails people being free to emigrate and set up a home and a livelihood there. Once pioneer emigration is the decision of private citizens rather than at the invitation of governments or mega-corporations, then people will begin to really ‘live’ on Mars. I think we’re many decades away from that.

My answer is a definite no. I might be prepared to visit (I definitely would have when younger) but to live? No, I'd be bored stiff after a few days.

Did you know they don't even have broadband up there? :D

We need to find a habitable planet to live on, but as time goes on, this appears to be less, rather than more likely. We haven't even found one yet and when we do, it'll probably take multiple lifetimes to get there.

I would love to go on and live on the moon. If you would like a flavour of what it is like then you should watch For All Mankind.

I think you would find the reality rather different! After about three days, I think you would be utterly bored.

If you want to live in a barren wasteland just hang around the UK after another 50 years of trickle up economics has siphoned off our national assets into tax havens. It'll be like the moon but with rain and gravity.

I think I'd get very bored as I like the varied places to go to. I enjoy the beach, sand dunes, mountains, rivers, etc.

Driving a moon buggy would be good fun though.

As I recall, all the nuclear waste stored on the moon was supposed to explode on 13th Sept 1999, and blast the moon out of orbit. :D

I doubt we'd survive if the remains of the Moon crashed into us, which given the gravitational pull is likely...

We would get no tides

I asked Brian Cox a question on Radio 5 Live, Are the Earth and Moon a Binary system, he said sort of.

Its due to the fact that the rules that said Pluto wasn't a planet made the moon one.

The moon is not the sole cause of tides (the sun is also involved).
So thats not actually true, we would still have tides, they would just be a lot smaller.

(Estimated to be about 1/3 of what they are now).

What we need to find is a lifeform that breathes in Carbon Dioxide and exhales Oxygen.
Once we have got hold of those then we breed them and they will help in securing a breathable planet.

If only we knew of such an organism, I fear that even if such an organism existed we'd just exploit and harvest it for our own short term needs and greed, might be best we don't find this mysterious mythical lifeform for their sake

You can achieve the same oxygenating effect with tanks of algae much as happened on the early Earth when the atmosphere had little or no Oxygen.

Easier than trying to grow a tree on the moon.

Ummm, your kidding, right ?

There is no CO2, or indeed any atmosphere of any sort, on the moon.

I'm sure there is, just like there is a lot of frozen water on Mars.

Neither is of much use, frozen.

Good point.

tweetiepooh 10-06-2022 11:28

Re: Would you go and live on the moon?

But would the moon be part of the EU?!!

I think the idea of "the tree" was to convert CO2 produced by people back to O2 rather than seeding the moon because as pointed out there is no appreciable atmosphere there of any sort. But trees and other plants use O2 at night when there is no sunlight so algae in tanks in permanent sunlight maybe the solution, could also use the algae for protein source maybe.

I still wouldn't go.

Halcyon 10-06-2022 12:20

Re: Would you go and live on the moon?

Just thinking in a slightly crazy way here but if we managed to hollow out the moon then maybe we could live inside it. A bit like a huge bottle. We'd fill it with Oxygen and then put a lid on it.

Even more claustrophobic lol.

Already been done by the Clangers. They used dustbin lids on the crater entrances. They seemed happy enough I must say :)

The loss of opposable thumbs may be awkward. Same with the loss of ability to speak though maybe we could move politicians to the moon with out much loss of clarity.

Actually that could be a good idea. Move all parliaments to the moon. They would have to be treat us earth-bound "plebs" really carefully if they want supplies to be delivered and deselection to be less brief and permanent that would be if the deselected one can be brought back down to earth. You would also have to be really sure that you wanted to be elected too.

Only for as long as we send them. Country doing badly - survival rations, doing well something extra. And only at certain intervals, so they could binge but then go hungry until the next supply run.

You may wish to read "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert A Heinlein…

Spoiler:
The Loonies (Lunar inhabitants) focused Earth’s attention when they tried to reduce rations by using a mass driver to drop rocks down the gravity well
