Guess the place game
1 Attachment(s)
So I thought it may be fun to have a "Guess the place game".
The rules are simple. 1. Someone posts a photo of somewhere. It could be a location in a city, town, village, a mountain, a beach, a castle, a landmark, or countryside. Basically somewhere outdoors! 2. The aim of the game is to guess what and where the place is. 3. You can ask questions to try and find out more information....eg. Is it by the sea? Is it a capital city? Is this location in Italy? Is it a site of historic interest? Is this place famous for making Pork Pies? Is this place in Yorkshire? etc.. The person who posted the photo can reply with Yes or No. 4. The winner is the person who gets the place and location correct. That person then gets the chance to host the next photo. And so it continues. For example: The Cutty Sark, Greenwich The Falkrik Wheel, Tamfourhill, Falkirk Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire Brighton Beach, Brighton So to begin, I am going to post a photo. Off you go! PS: Keep it fun and try and work it out yourselves. No reverse image lookups! |

All I have now have left are family photos and I'm not putting them into the public arena. A hint that may just trigger a memory is that these stepping stones do not cross the river but others do. :) |
Re: Guess the place game
Very true, joylynne. The ones that cross the river would be Dovedale, another famous place.
I'm going to give this one to joglynne who PM'd me with the correct answer. The photo is of one of the set of the stepping stones at Chee dale in the Peak District. It is a lovely walk along the river Wye. You can get there from the Monsal Trail, near Bakewell. Well done Joglynne. Over to you.... |

OK, so I have found one of my own photos. It's one I took when I was desperate to see the sea, to view a big sky and a far horizon. Got there and back in a morning and didn't need to wear a mask as the place was deserted. Well apart from a couple of dots at the waters edge, the most extreme social distancing ever. :)
The second photo is somewhere quite special to me. My mother's family fished from this harbour. A bit of a hint is that I stayed there most summers growing up from when I was about 5 years old and it took a couple of visits to the local shop before the locals realised I could understand what they were saying about my precocious nature (polite interpretation :D). Used to make me giggle when they thought I didn't speak the language. As the first may be too easy, and I won the first round, I hope no one minds me doing 2. |
Re: Guess the place game
Second photo, boat registration "BS" comes up as Beaumaris.
|
Re: Guess the place game
That registration can be seen almost anywhere in the world, well anywhere a boat can be seen..... but the boat you can see is close to home.

Is it Amlwch?

Sorry had to take a break. SP wins the trophy. It's changed a lot since my virst visits, all gussied up it looks quite smart far different than the working harbour I remember.
Anyone want to take a stab at the first picture. Clue ... if you were there now you could well hear screams over your right shoulder. :) |
Re: Guess the place game
Spiderplant, well done.....it's your turn to host a new photo.

Been there and listened to an evening Jazz concert in 2009 looked incredible with the wing all lit up. Love to go back but I can't travel any longer.
Not going to say where it is as I have already taken a turn. :D :D :D My comment can be used as a clue :) |
Re: Guess the place game
Well Jo knows where it is.:tu: It's up to the rest of you to work out where this building is.
Smithsonian: How did they build that? |
Re: Guess the place game
Pretty sure the black volcanic rock next to the sea is a clue.

I hope you don't mind Halcyon :D. As no one has come up with the location thought I would give the answer.
It's the Auditorio de Tenerife and is on the sea front at Santa Cruz and it's an awe inspiring, absolutely massive building. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYT7ZiTQFXk To keep things going I am posting a new location. May not look too interesting but I can promise it's well worth a visit. :D |
Re: Guess the place game
I recognise it but can't think where it is. Peak District or Snowdonia?

How long ago? Has the drive been used a lot since? I bet a good portion of what you lost could be recovered |
Re: Guess the place game

Our son, who is Head of Systems and Security including Disaster Management and Recovery for an international company, worked with his recovery data service team on the drive but it was almost totally corrupted with only a few viewable files left. Ironically the files recovered weren't of any real interest. I did originally offer to use some data recovery software that I had googled but he was horrified. :D :D :D The worst thing was our son had offered to back up all my stuff on to his server which would have, and now does, automatically store everything on the cloud but I kept forgetting to give him the drive. |

Jo's picture contains one extra clue. The shop is open but something else is too.
I did a quick Google image search and found the same picture. |

My picture is the latest, whilst an earlier ground breaking photograph taken in this location by Alfred Brothers has gone down in history. |

There's another 3 separate Caverns you can visit in the area. Including the Speedwell Cavern where you go down 106 steps and board a boat that takes you through the workings of a 230 year old lead mine. Are you up to posting another photo Halcyon, Or is someone else wanting to take the lead? |

Thankyou, I'l post one up.
We are definately learning some great facts about places through this. :tu: Ok..... Where is this.... |
Re: Guess the place game
Is this bridge in the North of England?
|
Re: Guess the place game
It is indeed up North.
Im looking for the place and the name of the river :) |
Re: Guess the place game
Is it the River Dee in Chester?
|
Re: Guess the place game
.....or the 0use in York?
|
Re: Guess the place game
I'm thinking it might be Durham?
|
Re: Guess the place game
Quote:
Wow! Joglynne you are on a roll! It is indeed the river Ouse that passes through the historical walled city of York. I was there two years ago when I went to visit the National Railway Museum. Well done! |
Re: Guess the place game
I stayed in a hotel very close to the bridge when one of my cases was transferred to York Crown Court. One of the highlights of my stay was being taken on a river cruise by my team and landing next to the Lendal Bridge.
It was the White Roses of York on the bridge that triggered the memory. Please could someone else take up the lead. Pretty please. :D |

On second thoughts, have a go at working out where this is.
A clue....Don't drink the water it will stain your teeth!!!!! |
Re: Guess the place game
Is it the Harecastle Tunnel in Kidsgrove? The water colour looks right. Don't know why it's that colour though.
|
Re: Guess the place game
No sorry, not the Harecastle Tunnel.
This is a lot smaller and is a Grade II listed building. It was built to hold a Royal boat belonging to a member of the Aristocracy and once carried Queen Victoria. |
Re: Guess the place game
Is this near Manchester?
|
Re: Guess the place game
|
Re: Guess the place game
Yep well done heero and I suspect Halcyon had worked it out as well.
It's the The Duke of Bridgewater boathouse on the Bridgewater canal at Worsley and the bright orange water is due to the water coming from the mines containing traces of iron ore. As I mentioned earlier the Boat House is a grade II listed building dating from the early/mid 19th century. It was built by 1st Earl of Ellesmere, a descendant of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater who financed the construction of the canal to carry coals from his local mines in to Manchester. The boathouses's original role was as a home for the Royal Boat that carried Queen Victoria along the canal when she visited Worsley in 1851 For anyone interested here's a link which gives the history of the Worsley Navigable Levels which are an extensive 52 miles of underground canal tunnels forming a series of coal mines in Worsley which were worked,in the main, by boats called starvationers which were forty seven feet long and four feet and a half wide including the gunnels and carried 7/8 tons of coal and and being linked together and brought out of the tunnel from six to twenty at a time . |
Re: Guess the place game

Just to give a name to the place I think this is .... Hardraw Force, England's highest unbroken waterfall which is located in the Yorkshire Dales national park.

Re: Guess the place game
Well done!. And the dragon is the inn through which you used to have to go through to get to it.

To keep the thread going here's another photo for any one who wants to carry on. This is an old Manor house, the oldest listed building in the area it is located. It has housed a whole raft of historical figures and the oldest parts date back to the the 14th century.
If you have ever tried to find it you will remember how you thought must have taken a wrong turn, especially if you tried to get there with your sat nav. Oh and it has a Ghost but she didn't turn up the night I visited. |
Re: Guess the place game
I've found it with a Google image search but I'll let others have a go.
