Was that the emperors voice?, we might even get some Vader? In fact I’d be amazed if we didn’t. Uncle owen was on point!

There may be some cross over to Boba Fett and Mandalorian, even though this is ……well about 27yrs?………...previous to them.

Vader is already confirmed. The guy who played him in the prequels has been confirmed as being Vader.

I am managing expectations. I really want it to be good and they give the impression in the music that they understand thematically what the feel of the character is supposed to be but after the Boba Fett finale i have lost all hope.

Pierre 11-03-2022 13:41

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-wan is quite a different proposition to Boba Fett. With Fett they were writing around a character we knew very little of. Obi-Wans character and purpose has been defined over several films.

Let's hope they dont screw it up then. It needs to strike a very specific tone and if it doesnt feel right or they disrespect the character there will be an uproar.

I have just rewatched the teaser and he hasn't got one in that either.

I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the fact they made a point of showing us him with a blaster. I am not going to jump the gun and start moaning but I am going to laugh my ass off if he goes six episodes without one.

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

I hope so. I don't do social media so i don't see everyone else's thoughts on things but i imagine many many other people have noticed it as well and i would love to know what the true fans think. I am hoping they have been really clever about it and the scene we see in the trailer is a nod to his past; he is in a fight, loses his light saber and is forced to use a blaster and when it is all over he throws it on the ground and says "i hate blasters" or whatever the line is from the film.

What’s a "true fan"?

General Maximus 04-05-2022 22:02

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

The people who understand the purity and essence of Star Wars and what it means to be a Jedi. I have zero patience for writers and show runners who come in and say "we are changing it up and doing something different" and all that bullshit. There is no universe in which a Jedi, let alone Obi-Wan Kenobi, is going to six episodes or a majority of without a lightsaber. And before anyone jumps down my throat saying "we know very little about this character and they are developing him bla bla bla" my realism factor says that they have already established in the prequel trilogy that he hates blasters and we know that a) he prefers a lightsaber and b) it is the preferred weapon of a Jedi. Anyone who has watched the Clone Wars understands how important a lightsaber is to a Jedi.

Hugh 04-05-2022 22:17

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

More questions (sorry).

Not trolling, actually interested in your views on this.

What is "the purity and essence of Star Wars"?

General Maximus 04-05-2022 23:24

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

It's hard to put it into words and I would describe it more as feeling like being one with the force.

https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2022/05/3.gif
There is a reason why this scene is so iconic and moving.

I would say it is essence of good versus evil, having a pure heart and doing the right thing no matter the cost. There isn't a sufficient adjective to describe this but this is why Rose is just an absolute outrage and Episode VIII needs to be removed from the timeline. You can describe the Rebel Alliance as the principled and determined good guys with an establish and shared ideology and set of goals. There is no way in a million years a rebel would do what Rose did.

Films like Star Wars teach you that (and I could say Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Hunger Games, Babylon 5). You may argue things aren't as black and white as that in real life but it is a good starting point. Start off with good standards, morals and principles and go from there.

In a way you can hold the Jedi up to be the gold standard in terms of ideals, keepers of the peace and discipline. Although it isn't and shouldn't be all about them, due to the position and power they hold within the universe their attitudes and behaviours influence and rub off on other people (e.g. Obi-wan to Luke to Han). You have a person or people setting an example of what it is to be a perfect person (subjective), this is how we lead our lives and always try to do the right thing and you can choose to follow our example or ignore us. That is in the story and it is fiction but as we all know, characters in films and tv series, good or bad, influence us. There are numerous examples in the news of people over the years who have been influenced by evil characters in films and committed murders etc. The Fast & Furious films are always funny when they get released for the fandom and racing it inspires but why not hold Star Wars up as the shining example of what it means to be the best person you can be with regards to purity of spirit.

As another example if you want to step away from Star Wars, lets look at the MCU and Avengers. Everyone has their favourite. Mine is Captain America. Regardless of story, film or scene, you watch it and think "if that situation arises I would like to think I could do that or behave like that". You are given a baseline to model yourself on of values and behaviour and you tweak it from there. I think Star Wars is a perfect example of that and the reason why it is so special is because other than something like B5, it has the benefit of time (duration) to impart that philosophy and ideology on multiple levels in multiple examples from multiple characters.

So go to back to your question and getting to the point, I would define a true fan as somebody who appreciates the essence of the mindset I have described above and sees Star Wars as more of the sum of its parts. It isn't just another random scifi fantasy action film. There is an underlying message and rich story it is trying to convey. The first six films were very consistent and did this perfectly imho but the new trilogy failed spectacularly; it was all style and no substance. They tried to be Star Wars and there were moments, but only got 40% of the way there.

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

The legendary John Williams is back to help write the music for Obi-Wan Kenobi. I can't wait to hear it.

Quote:

The world of “Star Wars” returns in a big way this month with “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” a Disney+ series that sees Ewan McGregor reprising his role from George Lucas’ prequel trilogy. But for many, it just wouldn’t be “Star Wars” without John Williams.

The Oscar winner’s iconic music still defines the massive science fiction franchise, and even as he steps back and lets younger composers work on “Star Wars” projects, his presence continues to be felt.

Williams is hard at work on “Indiana Jones 5” and “The Fabelmans,” so he was unavailable to score the show. Composing duties fell to “Loki” and “Paddington” composer Natalie Holt, who recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the process of working on the series. It turns out that Williams couldn’t completely stay away from “Star Wars,” and still found time to contribute some music to the upcoming series.

“We didn’t collaborate, but I did get to use his theme,” Holt said when asked about working with Williams. “He didn’t have very long and it was quite last minute whether he’d have time or not. But he really wanted to write that theme because he was the one character that he didn’t write the theme for in the original movie. So I think he had this feeling that he wanted to complete the challenge.”

Due to scheduling conflicts, Williams only had a short period of time to write Obi-Wan’s theme, but the 90-year-old composer delivered under pressure.

“I think he had two weeks and he came on board and wrote the Obi theme and a suite, which is the main title, and then a few variations of how the Obi theme can work,” she said. “That was what he had time to give the project, and it was just a gift. It’s so perfect and in a way, once I had that Obi theme, it set the tentpoles up for the project.”

It’s an interesting piece of movie trivia that the Saga films don’t contain a discrete theme for the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi. My guess would be because in the original film, within the principal ensemble he’s nevertheless (whisper it) a secondary character and in the sequels his brief appearances support bigger themes like the force or the Skywalker family. I suspect that Williams will then have felt that composing a theme for him for the prequels would have been too jarring, because musically he was attempting to carry the story from its untold beginning to the point we all know so well. When watched in chronological story order, the sudden lack of an Obi-Wan theme in IV would be jarring.

What’s allowed him to compose an Obi-Wan theme now is the fact that there has been no serious attempt to make the new Disney+ shows sound like the saga films, even though they’ve bent over backwards to make them look like them. From the news report it’s clear that this series isn’t going to sound like the saga either. Its composer is Natalie Holt, and she hasn’t collaborated with Williams on this, she has just received a basic theme composition, and some ideas for how its elements might be woven into the score. What she has received isn’t going to have been orchestrated either, and Williams won’t have had any input into that process when it came to it.

I don’t mean to give you a flaccid realism factor, but one thing this *doesn’t* mean is that the Obi-Wan series score is going to sound like Star Wars.

General Maximus 09-05-2022 11:36

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

I would love it if he composed something meaningful like Luke had the binary sunset and Yoda has his own theme. Obi-wan deserves it.

Stephen 09-05-2022 12:42

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

I'm still amazed that Williams is still working at the age of 90. That's just insane.

General Maximus 09-05-2022 12:54

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Yeah and good for him. His work has always been a labour of love and I imagine he will want to keep doing it for as long as possible. I didn't realise he was so old, for some reason I had it in my head that he was 83. It sounds very selfish but I am dreading the day he passes away because he can never been replaced. I want to transfer his consciousness into an AI or android so he can live forever. Or.................we need some soul hunters from B5....

Re: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Very good so far. It’s handy that the actors from the prequel trilogy are all now looking the right age for a story set at this point … Euan MacGregor is now a very convincing substitute for Alec Guinness. And I agree, young Leia was quite the revelation. I’d assumed the story was going to be all about morose Ben Kenobi watching Luke from afar, but we have some action to get our teeth into already. :D

thought the last episode was a bit of anti climax, but you're sat there, almost like you have seen it before, but you haven't seen it before, but you know what is and isn't going to happen :(

Also, I think it missed not having Dave Filoni involved, I think he would have made some changes, as he's such a fanboy Rebels, Clone Wars and Mandalorian add and expand, rather than undo/contradict the originals.

I enjoyed it. It was unnecessary, may have made a decent movie.

Seeing Ewan McGregor at this age playing Kenobi was a big +, and you could see how he could be Alec Guinness in 10yrs or so.

Vader at his peak powers also good.

Not sure where they go next though! I mean series about Andor, I can’t get excited about…..

I am the same. Find myself disappointed a lot less that way. If I do not like something I simply stop watching it and watch something else instead

Missed most the Easter eggs through out the series, had to watch a few vids on Youtube to catch them all
