Cable and full fibre ISP Virgin Media UK could be about to make a number of significant service changes for July 2020, such as making their existing 516Mbps (36Mbps upload) broadband bundle available to non-TV (standalone) customers and then boosting their TV Oomph plan to a top download of 600Mbps!

Interesting, I wonder if the lower tiers will receive a speed bump.

Kushan 16-06-2020 09:25

Re: ISP Virgin Media UK to Launch Surprise 600Mbps Broadband Tier

Would be nice, though I doubt it'd happen at the same time. Still Virgin doesn't like having too many different broadband speed packages available and this would be number 6 - so it's possible. I believe the current speeds would be 50, 100, 200, 350, 500, 600 and 1000.

Synthetic 16-06-2020 11:05

Re: ISP Virgin Media UK to Launch Surprise 600Mbps Broadband Tier

Honestly can't see the lower tiers getting a bump, guess it could make sense to make the 350 package 400 to streamline them a bit more though.

The article mentions that 600 is going to be like the 500 today, you can only get it as a bundle, so it seems as though 500 will be one of the new "normal" tiers. Could be 100, 200, 500, 1000.

I'm interested in an upload increase, 350 > 500 (or 600) is not really worth paying more.

Phoned in to see about our contact as we are coming to end of it we are on ultimate oomph bundle and pay £99 the best they can do was £110 he confirmed 500Mbps would be available for sale on its own from the 29th

But for us it’s time to move we are taking 910Mbps broadband home phone plus 2 SIM cards from bt at £69.99 Dropped TV completely

£70 a month is a steal for that deal. No brand loyalty, go where your wallet takes you.

Definitely get rid of the 50.
For the future, I quite like the neatness of them all doubling eg after entry level of 100 they go 250/500/1,000.

I have been saying that for donkeys. I have been able to get 500mbits for a while now but I haven't got it because I don't need the extra download speed and would only be getting it for the upload speed which is the same as what I have got on 350mbits. I would be interested in 1gbit purely for the upload speed but it isn't available yet.

It’s an embarrassment of riches. I’m over the moon if I get 15Mb from my sky FTTC connection. It varies between 7Mb to 17Mb.

Nope, will still be using HFC. The HFC will good for 10G, so FTTP will be Continue to be new build areas Only.

I'd settle for a hub with a 2.5G port. Though by 2025 that'll have to be 5G or even 10G if the service does 2.5G.

Toob is providing 900Mbps for £25/month in Southampton, I can't wait for them to lay the fibre on my road soon!

Kushan 21-06-2020 01:33

Re: ISP Virgin Media UK to Launch Surprise 600Mbps Broadband Tier

That's also a stonking deal. Though I suspect not a sustainable one, it's good to have competition!

I feel as though history is repeating itself with all the various small fibre providers laying fibre all over the country. Not too dissimilar to what happened with cable originally, it seems inevitable that they'll start merging and buying each other out.

I wish they would do it around here.

Yes, I did feel that too. I'm sure it's just a temporary thing while they get their name out there and they'll put the prices up.

Whatever happens, I'm just happy the fibre is being laid. We're so behind the rest of Europe in the FTTH game.

It's funny how as soon as Toob announce they're building a Gigabit Fiber broadband company in Southampton, Virgin announce that Southampton will be one of the first cities in the UK to get Virgin's 1000Mbps.

Virgin Media have publicly vowed to "destroy" Toob, but I wonder how they'll try to compete. Their prices for comparable internet are so much more expensive than Toob.

Anybody heard any rumours about Voom? Speed upgrades? DOCSIS 3.1? New business hub?

I’m currently on the 500Mbit package, but a boost in upload speed would be great for transferring data back to the office, I work on signal processing software (for radar) so often up transferring large amounts of raw quadrature data and processed data back and forth, although I try to work remotely via RDP (as my spectrum analyser and RF hardware is there) sometimes I end up doing development locally for convenience/speed.

The residential 1Gbit has 50Mbit upload though doesn’t it? I’d settle for that, that’s 40% faster than what I get on 500Mbit. I’m just a bit surprised that they haven’t yet released a 1G business product for parity with the residential service.

Yes that’s correct 1Gbps / 50Mbps for residential

I imagine that's down to the 1gig service using 3.1 stuff, which is still relatively new to Virgin. They probably want to roll it out and work out all the various kinks before making a business product out of it.

Likewise. With the 350M and 500M tiers retaining the 35M upload, there is zero incentive for me to switch, especially with an 18 month contract. The reality is that should we get an FTTP provider open up around here, I will get rid of VM in a heartbeat.

Having had G.Network for almost a year before our recent move, a real 1G up/down connection made me realise just how snappy a real gigabit connection based on pure fibre is. With no jitter, and super low latency, HFC is definitely not the future.

So the website doesn't list the M350 any more, so what happens to people on that tier?

My contract with VM has expired, so tried contacting them yesterday to ask about upping to the M500 at the £42/mo price. I was told this isn't possible, I can only have a 30 day rolling contract at £62/mo...

Try calling them again at the start of next month. I believe retentions get various credits, etc. reset at the start of the month.

buckeye 02-07-2020 15:48

Re: ISP Virgin Media UK to Launch Surprise 600Mbps Broadband Tier

As I'm currently out of contract with VM I've just signed up for the M500 broadband however I'm not sure I was told the entire truth about it, hopefully someone who is VM staff reads this and can confirm it was the truth I've been told and I was not conned into a package I didn't want.

My out of contract price for 350 meg BB and basic talk weekend phone line is £59 a month,
however I was told I could upgrade to the 500 meg package for £62 a month for BB only or £69 a month for BB and phone, so far so good and all seemed reasonable, but then I was told either of these packages would entail signing up to an 18 month contract or I could sign up for the Oomph package with a 5GB data, unlimited calls and texts sim for only £52 a month with the same 18 month contract.
This didn't compute with my brain and I asked at least 3 times about each package and the contract length, each time I was told all had an 18 month term contract.
I've signed up for the Oomph package on those terms but would really appreciate any VM staff advising if I have been told correctly whilst I still have time to cancel that contract.

Kushan 02-07-2020 15:59

Re: ISP Virgin Media UK to Launch Surprise 600Mbps Broadband Tier

Nobody from VM staff will be able to respond properly to this query as it's account specific and they shouldn't be detailing account specific stuff on a public forum.

Your best bet would be to ring Virgin back and ask them about the details of your contract. £52/month for that package is a fantastic deal though, if you have it.

I have that package but I wouldn't have minded paying the other prices if the contract term was less,
its mainly that 18 month quote for all packages that has me a little concerned.

Been with VM (and it's other names) for more than 20'ish years I'm paying £54.50 for the M350 Broadband only, but I'm tempted by BT's Full Fibre 900

900 down 110 Up with a Stay Fast Guarantee of 455Mb for just £4.49 more.

I'll give CS a call tomorrow to see what retentions can do.

WTF is a "Stay fast guarantee"?

I pay £42/month for M350 so you're definitely being overcharged. But Pure fibre is a much better connection if you can get it!

This is from their confirmation email:-
"
Your new package now includes:
Broadband: M500 Fibre Broadband - 5GB Oomph SIM - Discount"

I don't think its a particularly good deal as I don't have TV included however it does match the best they would offer me for just M350 BB on its own if I re-contracted (I've tried several times over the past few months that I've been out of contract to see what they would offer).

I didn't want to commit to a contract as I was planning to move away this year and didn't know if I would be moving to a VM area,
however the Covid pandemic has put paid to those plans for a while and this so far is the best deal I can get from VM, I would still like to know though if all the deals I mentioned before are subject to the 18 month contract I was quoted on them.

That's the same as a new customer deal. They wouldn't even give me that. They offered it to me for £77.

I cancelled a few weeks ago as I thought their offers to a 15 odd year customer were outrageously bad, also my BB had gone wrong at least once a day for 25 of the previous 40 days prior to me cancelling.
Unfortunately for me I found the reasonably good alternatives I had researched evaporated into pathetic 11 meg old style ADSL connections when I tried to sign up for them.

The timing of the new services have worked out for me, but from my experience don't expect VM to offer you better in your notice period, they would have just let me leave if things hadn't of changed (I was 22 days into my 30 day notice period before signing up again without any contact from them since cancelling).

I did a quick postcode search and the green box came up that 600mbps is now in my area. I rebooted my SH3 and did a speed test and nothing has changed.

Maybe it's immenant

Noticed today that 600meg is now available in my postcode - (PO9 Havant). No way to order anything with 600meg, mind.

All of the online upgrade choices are more expensive and offer even less than my current package! - A call to retentions again soon, I fear... Unless they'll soon release new package offerings?

Internet went off for 5 minutes and now I am getting 624 up 42 down

So is everyone that is on 500 getting a free upgrade to 600?

What about the other tiers, any plans for a free upgrade there?

No, it's specific to Ultimate Oomph bundles.

Just checked mine. I've had the 600 upgrade but you wouldn't not know it - still getting half of that.
