Well deserved and IMO the first that has been earned in recent times.

Obvs a wonderful honour - well deserved.

I have a question, though. He was made an honorary Colonel by his regiment. Yet his official title will be Captain Sir Thomas Moore. Why can't he use the Colonel handle? Seems pointless otherwise. And I hope his pension rises to Colonel's pension level.

He can use it but doesn't want to.

"I'm still Captain Tom, that's who I really am but if people choose to call me colonel, well, thank you very much."

I doubt very much you're given the choice of how to be addressed, this sort of thing is steeped in tradition and etiquette and if I had to hazard a guess it'd be that ceremonial ranks are non applicable

It explained it on the news yesterday, that due to it being an honorary Colonel title that his official title would be Captain Sir Tom Moore.

A very humble man. Good luck to him a lot of people could learn a lot from him.

Mod note - thread title amended for accuracy; the money raised is going to NHS Charities Together, not the NHS.

The actual amount is closer to £40m when you add gift aid

Really ? A knighthood ?
What he raised is fantastic, but all he did was walk around a garden.
The rest is really down to luck - the media picked up on him very early, and thus it snow-balled wildly.
Great job yes, fantastic amount of money, but deserving of a knighthood, I dont really think so.

We all know what you mean, but when you look at many others on the gravy train who have been knighted .....

He walked around a garden at 99yrs of age. I hope you can do that when you get there. At least he has earned the respect of the nation.
How many others who have been Knighted have actually done that?

Physically 'all he did' was walk around his garden.

Mentally/spiritually. At a time when many people are suffering and/or struggling with the current situation he gave them something to smile about, be happy about and be proud about.

He showed people the world over how one 'ordinary' person can make such a significant difference to the lives of others.

And they know where the bodies are buried, it goes completely against the spirit of the system for it to be abused in such a way, giving knighthoods out to people on pure altruistic grounds will never catch on

What gets me is that I've run around spaces far bigger than a garden for AGES and I don't have a Knighthood.

It just shows how far the common man can go with the hyperbole of media excess

I donated £10 to someone's sponsored walk to save/kill the whales (I can't remember which) AND I have left sarcastic comments on the internet?

£150m UK PPE funds went to a shell company linked to a man who advised the UK Trade Secretary, which “secured exclusive rights to the full production capacity of a large factory in China”

See how far the rot has spread
Seems that every penny this gentleman raised for the NHS has been lost to Liz Truss' mate who has a company worth £100 on paper....

As usual you are wrong. All the money raised by Capt. Sir Tom went to NHS charities.

Are you suggesting impropriety on the part of Liz Truss?
And if not what is your true motive for mentioning her?

Yet again we get misdirection and obfuscation. No comment on this sleazy Government wasting more money that Captain Tom raised. They literally can do anything and you would not criticise them.

Fact. The government cannot touch a penny of what Capt. Sir Tom raised, it went to NHS Charities and has nothing to do with the issue you brought up.
At best your assertion is either incorrect or an outright lie to further your agenda. You decide.

If anyone is guilty of misdirection or obfuscation it is you relating monies raised for an independant group of charities with Government spending overlooked and certified by career civil servants.

Can we take the purchase of PPE or any other Government spending out of this thread as it has absolutely nothing to do with Capt. Sir Tom did with his fundraising.

I don't know about the rest of you but I find it offensive to what a 100 yr old guy did for NHS charities.

Yes their ineptitude shouldn’t distract from the underfunding of public services. I for once agree with pip.

A somewhat back-handed way of agreeing with Pip!

For the avoidance of doubt, move on means move on. This thread is for discussion of Captain Sir Tom Moore’s fundraising for NHS-focused charities, *not* for discussion of government allocation of the national health budget.
